Book excerpt: The synthesis and characterization of new aromatic dichloride monomers containing benzoyl and phenylsulfonyl pendant groups and the corresponding polymers made via Ni(O)-catalyzed coupling polymerization are described. This work is an outgrowth of the previously described synthesis of poly(benzoyl-1,4-phenylene) from the Ni(O)-catalyzed coupling polymerization of 2,5-dichlorobenzophenone. The new monomers containing benzoyl pendant groups were synthesized by the Friedel-Crafts reaction of 2,5-dichlorobenzoyl chloride and substituted benzenes to give structures that were substituted at the para position on the pendant benzene ring. The substituents include fluorine, methyl, ethyl, and isopropyl.

Book excerpt: Derivatives of benzene chromium tricarbonyl, (116-arene)chromiumtricarbonyl, and a molybdenum complex, trans-bis( I,2-bis(diphenylphosphinoethane)bis(P-isocyanoaniline) molybdenum (0), were polymerized to form rigid organometallic polymer systems are reported. The resulting polymers were characterized systematically. The organochromium monomers were prepared by reacting the arene with chromium hexacarbonyl in refluxing dibutyl ether/tetrahydrofuran under inert conditions. There were several steps in the synthesis of the organomolybdenum monomer. p-Phenylenediamine was converted to p-isocyanoaniline in the presence of potassium hydroxide. Trans-bis(1,2-bis(diphenylphosphinoethane)bis(dinitrogen) molybdenum (0) was prepared by reducing molybdenum (V) chloride with a sodium/mercury amalgam in the presence of dinitrogen gas and bis(diphenylphosphinoethane) in tertrahydrofuran. Trans-bis(l ,2-bis(diphenylphosphinoethane)bis(dinitrogen) molybdenum (0) and pisocyanoaniline were reacted in tetrahydrofuran to prepare the organomolybdenum monomer,trans-bis(l ,2-bis (diphenylphosphinoethane)bis(p-isocyanoaniline) molybdenum (0). The syntheses and characterizations of model compounds and related organic polymers were attempted. Analogous model compounds and organic polymers were synthesized from isocyanates and acid chlorides in either dimethylacetamide or tetrahydrofuran. A series of organic polymers was synthesized via low temperature solution polycondensation from reacting diisocyanates and acid chlorides with the organometallic monomers in solution. An attempt to set up a gel permeation chromatography lab to determine the molecular weight of the polymers was unsuccessful. It is believed that the compounds formed from m-phenylenediamine, except for the monomer, have not been previously reported. The molybdenum polymers have not been reported. The organometallic polymers reduce the amount of hydrogen bonding of the polymers and increases the solubility of the polymers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semiconducting conjugated polymers hold tremendous promise as active layers for transformative electronic devices. This materials class benefits from the structural variety provided by organic chemistry such that highly tunable band structures are attainable for as-synthesized polymers. This dissertation describes the synthesis and characterization of novel imidazole-containing conjugated polymers for the purposes of (de)protonating the as-synthesized materials gaining conjugated poly(ionomer)s. (De)protonation easily enables band structure modification through manipulation of the materials' ionization potential and electron affinity. Controlled exposure to acids and bases led to reversible (de)protonation observable via UV-visible and photoluminescence spectroscopies. (De)protonation's effects on polymeric band structures was empirically and computationally examined. Additionally, we scrutinize different approaches for gaining end-functionalized conjugated polymers from AA/BB-type polycondensations and delineate requirements to obtain well-defined chain-ends.

Book excerpt: This study describes the synthesis and characterization of mid- and end-chain functional telechelics, macromonomers and their use in preparing soluble and processable comb-like conjugated polymers, such as poly(phenylene vinylene)s (PPVs). Well-defined polystyrene (PSt) or poly(-caprolactone) (PCL) based polymers containing mid- or end-chain dibromobenzene moieties were prepared by controlled polymerization methods, such as atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) or ring opening polymerization (ROP). The reaction of these polymers with amino- or aldehyde- functionalized monoboronic acids, in Suzuki type couplings, yielded the corresponding desired telechelics. Further functionalization was achieved by condensation reactions of these polymers with appropriate low molecular weight aldehydes or amines to form azomethine linkages. As a result, mid- or end-chain amino-, aldehyde-, pyrrolyl-, naphthyl- or hydroxy-functional telechelics were obtained. These telechelics may serve as useful macromonomers in the preparation of various macromolecular structures displaying distinct characteristics. PPV derivatives bearing well-defined PCL or PSt as lateral susbstituents were synthesized by following a Wittig polycondensation using dialdehyde functional telechelic macromonomers in combination with bis(triphenylphosphonium) salts in the presence of potassium tert- butoxide. The resulting colored PPVs are soluble in common organic solvents at room temperature just as the starting macromonomers. They emit blue and exhibit very high relative and absolute photoluminescence quantum yield. Thus, excellent solubility combined with the optical properties favours the use of these materials in the design of highly efficient light emitting-diodes (LEDs) and in many applications in various areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heterocycles are ubiquitously present in nature and occupy a unique place in organic chemistry as they are part of the DNA and haemoglobin that make life possible. The Chemistry of Heterocycles covers an introduction to the topic, followed by a chapter on the nomenclature of all classes of isolated, fused and polycyclic heterocycles. The third chapter delineates the highly strained three membered N,O and S containing aromatic and non-aromatic heterocycles with one and more than one similar and dissimilar heteroatom. The four-membered heterocycles are abundantly present in various natural and synthetic products of pharmacological importance. This chapter describes the natural abundance, synthesis, chemical reactivity, structural features and their medicinal importance. This class of compounds are present as sub-structures in penicillin and cytotoxic Taxol. Lastly, a chapter on the natural abundance, synthesis, chemical reactivity and pharmacological importance of 5-membered heterocycles with N,O,S heteroatom is covered. The chemistry of heterocycles with mixed heteroatom such as, N-S, N-O, N-S etc. is also described. - Gives in-depth, clear information about various systems of nomenclature along with widely acceptable IUPAC system for naming various classes of heterocycles - Provides complete information about natural occurrences, synthesis, chemical reactivity, pharmacological importance of heterocycles and their application in material science - Highly relevant for graduate students and researchers, providing updated information about various isolated and fused N,O and,S containing heterocycles
