Le terme DBD regroupe, donc, les configurations de decharges pour lesquelles un courant transite entre les electrodes separees par un gaz et par au moins une couche de dielectrique dont son introduction a pour but de limiter l'energie qui passe dans chaque canal de decharge afin d'eviter le passage au regime d'arc. La premiere et la plus importante des applications des DBDs est la generation d'ozone provenant de l'air ou de l'oxygene qui est principalement utilise dans le traitement de l'eau pour la rendre potable et au cours de ces dernieres decennies, les applications des decharges a barrieres dielectriques ont ete diversifiees. Ce manuscrit s'inscrit dans le cadre de cette application, le travail est base sur la caracterisation des plasmas et l'utilisation de reacteurs DBD pour produire de l'ozone. Plusieurs aspects ont ete developpes: generateurs d'ozone capables de traiter de l'eau a echelle industrielle, alimentations haute tension a haute frequence, utilisation de plusieurs instrum.

Généralement utilisées à la pression atmosphérique, leurs domaines d'applications s'étendent de la production d'ozone, aux traitements de surface polymère en passant par les sources incohérentes de rayonnement UV. A la pression atmosphérique, ces décharges sont généralement de type filamentaire. Mais, sous certaines conditions particulières d'alimentation, il est possible d'obtenir une décharge homogène, similaire à une décharge luminescente à basse pression. L'objectif de ce travail est, par le biais d'une modélisation bidimensionnelle de la décharge filamentaire, d'améliorer la connaissance des mécanismes de création et de propagation pour proposer une voie d'établissement du régime luminescent. Ce modèle fluide, basé sur un ensemble d'équations hydrodynamiques, prend en compte non seulement l'influence des particules chargées, mais aussi celle des particules lourdes (états radiatifs, métastables, ). Ces espèces excitées n'étaient jusqu'ici pas inclus dans les modèles de décharge filamentaire alors qu'elles jouent un rôle capital dans la propagation d'une décharge luminescente. L'étude systématique de la distribution spatio-temporelle de toutes les espèces prises en compte lors des différentes phases de propagation, a permis de mettre en évidence l'importante concentration d'espèces métastables non seulement dans le gaz, mais aussi au voisinage de la surface des diélectriques. L'émission secondaire d'électrons engendrée par impact de ces niveaux métastables sur la surface, bien que peu importante, semble être le mécanisme prépondérant pour l'établissement d'une décharge luminescente. En effet, il permet une ionisation à faible champ électrique nécessaire à l'établissement de ce régime.

Book excerpt: Une décharge à barrière diélectrique (DBD) provenant d'un claquage de type Townsend et entretenue dans un régime luminescent peut aboutir à une décharge d'apparence homogène ou filamentaire. Grâce à une importante variété de structures filamentaires observables et à leurs similarités avec les structures observées dans d'autres domaines, les DBD sont d'un grand intérêt en dynamique des systèmes non linéaires. Numériques ou expérimentaux, les moyens d'études de systèmes complexes se doivent d'être en premier lieu fiables et simples. Une grande partie du temps de cette thèse a consisté à mettre en place un dispositif expérimental permettant d'obtenir des résultats reproductibles et à élaborer un code numérique de décharge à zéro dimension permettant des calculs rapides tout en conservant la physique essentielle des décharges. Un code fluide à deux dimensions préexistant a aussi été utilisé. Ces trois outils, par leurs complémentarités et leurs versatilités propres, ont offert des possibilités d'investigations plus poussées qu'auparavant. La question principale posée au début de la thèse concerne l'origine de l'instabilité d'une décharge menant à une structuration spatiale. Pour y répondre, une des études visa à regarder l'influence de l'ajout d'une impureté sur les paramètres expérimentaux observables grâce à la combinaison de résultats expérimentaux et numériques. Les décharges ont été réalisées dans les gaz rares tels que l'hélium, le néon et l'argon et l'impureté ajoutée est de l'azote. L'un des principaux résultats montre que dans le néon, l'effet Penning joue un rôle central dans la structuration. D'autres travaux menés en parallèle ont entre autres visé à identifier les facteurs responsables de la taille des filaments ou à aborder la spatialisation d'une décharge à partir de modèles 0D couplés.

His research was focused on optical pumping, statistical mechanics of quantum gases, musical acoustics and the foundations of quantum mechanics.
