Book excerpt: L'OBJECTIF DE NOTRE TRAVAIL, A LA SUITE DU TRANSFERT DE COMPETENCES DE L'ETAT AUX CONSEILS REGIONAUX EN MATIERE DE FORMATION PROFESSIONNELLE CONTINUE EN 1983, EST D'IDENTIFIER SELON QUELLES MODALITES LA FPC A CONSTITUE UN OUTIL DE POLITIQUE ECONOMIQUE POUR LES REGIONS ENTRE 1986-1992. LE POINT DE VUE DEVELOPPE EST QUE LA DECENTRALISATION DE LA FPC A PERMIS AUX CONSEILS REGIONAUX, AU MOYEN DE LA DIFFUSION D'INFORMATIONS SUR LA PREFERENCE DES EMPLOYEURS D'INTERVENIR SUR LE FONCTIONNEMENT DU MARCHE DU TRAVAIL. LES REGIONS ONT CHERCHE A MODIFIER LA LOGIQUE DE CONSTRUCTION DES FORMATIONS QUI PREVALAIT : ALORS QUE LA FPC ETAIT ESSENTIELLEMENT ELABOREE PAR LES ORGANISMES DE FORMATION SELON UNE LOGIQUE DE L'OFFRE, LES REGIONS ONT INSTRUMENTE LEUR ACTION AFIN D'EN FAVORISER LA CONCEPTION SELON UNE LOGIQUE DE LA DEMANDE COMMANDEE PAR LA SPHERE PRODUCTIVE. CE TRAVAIL EST ORGANISE EN DEUX PARTIES. LA PREMIERE PRESENTE LE CADRE THEORIQUE. TROIS GRANDS THEMES SONT ABORDES : TOUT D'ABORD L'ANALYSE ECONOMIQUE DE LA DECENTRALISATION QUI EVOQUE LES AVANTAGES ET LES INCONVENIENTS DE CE SYSTEME DE COORDINATION EN SE NOURRISSANT DES APPORTS DE LA THEORIES DES CONTRATS, ENSUITE LA FORMATION ET SON ROLE DANS LE COUPLE DEVELOPPEMENT ECONOMIQUE/ORGANISATION DE L'ESPACE, ENFIN LE ROLE STRUCTURANT DU SYSTEME PRODUCTIF D'UNE PART SUR L'ORGANISATION SPATIALE DU MARCHE DU TRAVAIL ET D'AUTRE PART SUR L'AGENCEMENT DES RAPPORTS ENTRE SPHERE PRODUCTIVE ET SPHERE FORMATIVE. LA SECONDE PARTIE EST RESERVEE AUX ANALYSES EMPIRIQUES. IL RESSORT D'UNE PART QUE SI POLITIQUE ECONOMIQUE IL Y A, ELLE NE SE SITUE PAS DANS LE DOMAINE BUDGETAIRE ET D'AUTRE PART QUE L'INFLUENCE DES VARIABLES CONTEXTUELLES SUR LES CHOIX DES REGIONS DEMEURE MODESTE. EN FAIT, LES CONSEILS REGIONAUX INTERVIENNENT DANS LES RAPPORTS ENTRE SPHERE PRODUCTIVE ET SPHERE FORMATIVE. CE POINT DE VUE EST EN PARTICULIER ILLUSTRE PAR L'ETUDE DE LA REGION DE BOUGOGNE.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People have a natural propensity to understand language text as a succession of smallish chunks, whether they are reading, writing, speaking or listening. Linguists have found that this propensity can shed light on the nature and structure of language, and there are many studies which attempt to harness the potential of natural chunking. This book explores the role of chunking in the description of discourse, especially spoken discourse. It appears that chunking offers a sound but flexible platform on which can be built a descriptive model which is more open and comprehensive than more familiar approaches to structural description. The model remains linear, in that it avoids hierarchies, and it concentrates on the combinatorial patterns of text. The linear approach turns out to have many advantages, bringing together under one descriptive method a wide variety of different styles of speech and writing. It is complementary to established grammars, but it raises pertinent questions about many of their assumptions.

Book excerpt: This book describes an approach to lexis and grammar based on the concept of phraseology and of language patterning arising from work on large corpora. The notion of 'pattern' as a systematic way of dealing with the interface between lexis and grammar was used in Collins Cobuild English Dictionary (1995) and in the two books in the Collins Cobuild Grammar Patterns series (1996; 1998). This volume describes the research that led to these publications, and explores the theoretical and practical implications of the research. The first chapter sets the work in the context of work on phraseology. The next two chapters give several examples of patterns and how they are identified. Chapters 4 and 5 discuss and exemplify the association of pattern and meaning. Chapters 6, 7 and 8 relate the concept of pattern to traditional approaches to grammar and to discourse. Chapter 9 summarizes the book and adds to the theoretical discussion, as well as indicating the applications of this approach to language teaching. The volume is intended to contribute to the current debate concerning how corpora challenge existing linguistic theories, and as such will be of interest to researchers in the fields of grammar, lexis, discourse and corpus linguistics. It is written in an accessible style, however, and will be equally suitable for students taking courses in those areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume is a collection of papers that deal with the issue of translation quality from a number of perspectives. It addresses the quality of human translation and machine translation, of pragmatic and literary translation, of translations done by students and by professional translators. Quality is not merely looked at from a linguistic point of view, but the wider context of QA in the translation workflow also gets ample attention. The authors take an inductive approach: the papers are based on the analysis of translation data and/or on hands-on experience. The book provides a bird's eye view of the crucial quality issues, the close collaboration between academics and industry professionals safeguarding attention for quality in the 'real world'. For this reason, the methodological stance is likely to inspire the applied researcher. The analyses and descriptions also include best practices for translation trainers, professional translators and project managers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the importance of identifying and addressing misconceptions for the successful teaching and learning of science across all levels of science education from elementary school to high school. It suggests teaching approaches based on research data to address students’ common misconceptions. Detailed descriptions of how these instructional approaches can be incorporated into teaching and learning science are also included. The science education literature extensively documents the findings of studies about students’ misconceptions or alternative conceptions about various science concepts. Furthermore, some of the studies involve systematic approaches to not only creating but also implementing instructional programs to reduce the incidence of these misconceptions among high school science students. These studies, however, are largely unavailable to classroom practitioners, partly because they are usually found in various science education journals that teachers have no time to refer to or are not readily available to them. In response, this book offers an essential and easily accessible guide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trade can dramatically improve women’s lives, creating new jobs, enhancing consumer choices, and increasing women’s bargaining power in society. It can also lead to job losses and a concentration of work in low-skilled employment. Given the complexity and specificity of the relationship between trade and gender, it is essential to assess the potential impact of trade policy on both women and men and to develop appropriate, evidence-based policies to ensure that trade helps to enhance opportunities for all. Research on gender equality and trade has been constrained by limited data and a lack of understanding of the connections among the economic roles that women play as workers, consumers, and decision makers. Building on new analyses and new sex-disaggregated data, Women and Trade: The Role of Trade in Promoting Gender Equality aims to advance the understanding of the relationship between trade and gender equality and to identify a series of opportunities through which trade can improve the lives of women.

Book excerpt: This book has been published by Allenvi (French National Alliance for Environmental Research) to coincide with the 22nd Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP22) in Marrakesh. It is the outcome of work by academic researchers on both sides of the Mediterranean and provides a remarkable scientific review of the mechanisms of climate change and its impacts on the environment, the economy, health and Mediterranean societies. It will also be valuable in developing responses that draw on “scientific evidence” to address the issues of adaptation, resource conservation, solutions and risk prevention. Reflecting the full complexity of the Mediterranean environment, the book is a major scientific contribution to the climate issue, where various scientific considerations converge to break down the boundaries between disciplines.

Book excerpt: Earthen architecture constitutes one of the most diverse forms of cultural heritage and one of the most challenging to preserve. It dates from all periods and is found on all continents but is particularly prevalent in Africa, where it has been a building tradition for centuries. Sites range from ancestral cities in Mali to the palaces of Abomey in Benin, from monuments and mosques in Iran and Buddhist temples on the Silk Road to Spanish missions in California. This volume's sixty-four papers address such themes as earthen architecture in Mali, the conservation of living sites, local knowledge systems and intangible aspects, seismic and other natural forces, the conservation and management of archaeological sites, research advances, and training.
