Book excerpt: Excerpt from Synopsis of Chess Openings: A Tabular Analysis The Author of the Synopsis has again the satisfaction to learn that the demand for the last Edition has been exhaustive. The Second Edition was issued in 1876, and even during the short space of five years many important discoveries and improved methods of conducting the attack and the defense have been published, and upon reviewing the examples so many imperfections were apparent, and corrections necessary, that the Author saw the necessity of producing an entirely new book. The means at his disposal were adequate to the task, but the preparation of the Tables was a laborious undertaking, which would considerably delay the publication of a book for which there is still a demand. The author consulted a few leading members of the Birmingham Club, and they recommended that several proficients should be corresponded with to invite their assistance, but this project met with but little encouragement. A few amateurs, however, undertook the task, for which the writer wishes publicly to express his obligations. To Messrs. A. and M. Michael, Wildman, and Bridgwater, of the Birmingham Club; Mr. Thomas Bourn, of Clevedon; Rev. Hewan Archdall, of Newcastle on-Tyne; Mr. Freeborough, of Hull; and Rev. C. E. Ranken, of Malvern, for material assistance in the compilation of the Tables, original variations in the openings, and help in the examination of proof. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Speaking for myself and for players of my strength, Chess Openings: Theory and Practice is the greatest aid I have ever seen for preparing for a tournament. Speaking for all other players, the book is a "must." Current thinking on all important lines is meticulously presented, offering myriad, clear-cut ideas a completely new and effective arsenal of weapons. "-Samuel Reshevsky, United States Open Champion." Chess Openings Theory and Practice is a remarkable book, unequaled by any book of that era or since. It is not a mere openings book with long columns of moves followed at the end by punctuation marks such as + -- or =. It presents opening ideas and games, often including the first game where each opening was played, plus the history of the opening, the names of famous players who played this opening and the ideas and plans on which the opening is based. It provides "idea variations." These are variations that may not actually occur in actual practice, but are what you would play if given the chance. No other book does that, at least not in English and not to this extent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most chess opening books are either too detailed or too shallow. Chess Opening Essentials has exactly the right balance and is an accessible primer and a reference book at the same time. It gives a flavor of how every opening works and points at the various middlegame plans that apply after the opening has ended. Chess Opening essentials helps beginners to develop a solid understanding of fundamental opening ideas, gives casual players the ability to choose the opening that suits their style and taste and is a tool for club players to test and review their opening repertoire as well as a reference book to which advanced players keep returning. The authors do not propagate forcing tactical variations to be memorized mechanically, but explain what you should actually be trying to achieve when playing the opening of your choice. They include the main alternative responses and give clear indications for further study.
