The conservative majority of the Supreme Court has overturned the historic Roe v. Wade decision from 1973, which legalized abortion in the United States. Before, a leaked document with judges' opinions sent shock waves through the US, and pro-choice protesters took to the streets. About 50 years ago, during the "Roe" decision, fetal viability was approximately 28 weeks (7 months); experts now concur that medical advancements have lowered the threshold to 23 or 24 weeks (6 months or slightly less), and more recent studies suggest that this may even be as low as 22 weeks. Pregnancy lasts, on average, 40 weeks. The point at which the rights of the woman and the unborn fetus can be divided is frequently referred to as "foetal viability." The commencement of a person's most recent menstrual period is typically used to determine how long a pregnancy is. Pre-viability timeframes don't give women much time and opportunity to decide if they should abort abort because many people don't know they are pregnant until the sixth week. This metric is used in abortion regulations all over the world, although those that do not support abortion claim that lawmakers and the court in the Roe case chose it randomly.
