The effect under study is one whereby at a fixed total catalyst loading the mixture of two catalysts would be more effective in burn rate augmentation than a single catalyst. At 2000 psia all possible combinations of catalysts showed synergistic effects but the effects are weak and within the reproducibility range of the experiments. Ferric oxide and iron blue showed synergistic effects only at 300 and 2000 psia over the pressure range 300-2000 psia. Analysis of the effect of binder-oxidizer reactions upon the surface shape of a two-dimensional sandwich has shown that (a) the faster are these reactions the more deeply will the sandwich obtain a V-shape and b) these reactions are generally fast enough to indeed affect the surface shape.

Book excerpt: This third edition of the classic on the thermochemical aspects of the combustion of propellants and explosives is completely revised and updated and now includes a section on green propellants and offers an up-to-date view of the thermochemical aspects of combustion and corresponding applications. Clearly structured, the first half of the book presents an introduction to pyrodynamics, describing fundamental aspects of the combustion of energetic materials, while the second part highlights applications of energetic materials, such as propellants, explosives and pyrolants, with a focus on the phenomena occurring in rocket motors. Finally, an appendix gives a brief overview of the fundamentals of aerodynamics and heat transfer, which is a prerequisite for the study of pyrodynamics. A detailed reference for readers interested in rocketry or explosives technology.

The ingredients used in the experiment are compacted polycrystalline ammonium perchlorate as the oxidizer, hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene as the binder and four catalysts: Harshaw catalyst CU-0202, Fe2O3, ferrocene, and iron blue. The pressure range studied is 600-2000 psia. The experimental techniques used are cinephotomacrography for sample observation during burning and burn rate determination, scanning electron microscopy for observation of quenched samples, and electron microprobing for an exploratory study of surface compositon. A theoretical solution to a simple sandwich deflagration problem is attained. The probable sites of catalytic activity are determined, results are compared with actual propellant experience, and the analysis is used to clarify experimental results. (Author).

Book excerpt: Modern energetic materials include explosives, blasting powders, pyrotechnic m- tures and rocket propellants [1, 2]. The study of high-temperature decomposition of condensed phases of propellants and their components (liquid, solid and hybrid) is currently of special importance for the development of space-system engineering [3, 4]. To better understand the burning mechanisms (stationary, nonstationary, - steady) of composite solid propellants and their components, information about the macrokinetics of their high-temperature decomposition is required [5]. To be able to evaluate the ignition parameters and conditions of safe handling of heat-affected explosives, one needs to know the kinetic constants of their high-temperature - composition. The development of new composite solid propellants characterized by high performance characteristics (high burning rates, high thermal stability, stability to intrachamber perturbations, and other aspects) is not possible without quanti- tive data on the high-temperature decomposition of composite solid propellants and their components [6]. The same reasons have resulted in signi?cant theoretical and practical interest in the high-temperature decomposition of components of hybrid propellants. It is known that hybrid propellants have not been used very widely due to the low bu- ing (pyrolysis) rates of the polymer blocks in the combustion chambers of hybrid rocket engines. To increase the burning rates it is necessary to obtain information about their relationships to the corresponding kinetic and thermophysical prop- ties of the fuels.

Book excerpt: Despite significant developments and widespread theoretical and practical interest in the area of Solid-Propellant Nonsteady Combustion for the last fifty years, a comprehensive and authoritative text on the subject has not been available. Theory of Solid-Propellant Nonsteady Combustion fills this gap by summarizing theoretical approaches to the problem within the framework of the Zeldovich-Novozhilov (ZN-) theory. This book contains equations governing unsteady combustion and applies them systematically to a wide range of problems of practical interest. Theory conclusions are validated, as much as possible, against available experimental data. Theory of Solid-Propellant Nonsteady Combustion provides an accurate up-to-date account and perspectives on the subject and is also accompanied by a website hosting solutions to problems in the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this report, the theoretical, steady state combustion model, the Petite Ensemble Model (PEM), is described in detail. The PEM is based upon a combination of a unique statistical treatment of the burning propellant surface and a comprehensive multiple flame type, physio-chemical combustion model. Due to this statistical treatment, the PEM can account for both oxidizer particle size and oxidizer particle size distribution effects on burning rate behavior; an unique feature of this model. The effects on propellant burning rate behavior due to the inclusion of aluminum particles have been taken into account within this version of the PEM, as have any possible effects caused by the presence of a crossflow velocity above the propellant surface (erosive burning). The PEM is capable of modeling the burning behavior of AP-based/hydrocarbon binder, composite solid propellants. Propellant additives such as aluminum oxide, zirconium carbide and graphite, as well as aluminum, can also be incorporated in the propellant formulations modeled by the PEM. This report presents the results obtained by applying a small perturbation analysis to the equations representing the steady state PEM (including aluminum and erosive burning effects). Performing such an analysis yields nonsteady state models of both the pressure coupled response and the velocity pressure coupled response of composite solid propellants. Other historical pressure coupled response models such as the Dension and Baum mode, the Cohen model, and the Zeldovich/Novozhilov model are also briefly described. Finally, a second velocity coupled response model based on the Zeldovich/Novozhilov methodology coupled to the erosive burning PEM is presented. (Author).

Book excerpt: Six aluminized propellants were investigated through strand burning in a windowed combustion bomb at 500 psi and 1000 psi. Postfire particle residues were analyzed with a scanning electron microscope and found to have bi-modal size distributions. The mean diameter of the fine particle distribution was approximately 10 microns in all cases while the mean diameter of the coarse particles was approximately the same size as the initial aluminum cast in the propellant. Measurements taken from the high speed motion pictures included resolution, propellant burning rate, the diameter of the burning particles ejected from the surface, and vertical velocity of burning particles. The diameters of burning particles were approximately 7 to 12 times the diameter of the initial aluminum cast in the propellant. Aluminum size had only small effects on burning rate. The smallest particle that could be accurately resolved with the motion pictures was approximately 60 microns. (Author).

Book excerpt: A general method for extracting particle size dependent information from experimental rate/formulation data was developed from the statistical methodology. This technique was employed to correlate the data bases of Miller. Results showed that, by employing an interaction parameter of 4, both additive and additive free data could be correlated to standard error of estimate below 10.5%. The effect of steady radiant energy deposition on steady and nonsteady burning was explored. Results showed that if the radiant energy deposited in the reactive zones is negligible (an excellent assumption for low signature propellants) the effect of radiant energy deposition can always be accounted for by substituting the radiation augmented initial temperature for the initial propellant temperature.
