Book excerpt: Praise for the first volume: `It is very valuable to have [this collection of articles] all together in one place...a rich repository of insights and experiences for all the somatic disciplines. It is a wonderful collection of articles.' - Somatics 1999/2000 This second volume on Authentic Movement - a new discipline aiding the creative process in choreography, writing, theatre performance, dance, graphic and expressive arts, as well as spirituality - is an engaging and dynamic collection of scholarly essays, personal stories, practical suggestions and resources. It reflects cutting edge work on creative expression, meditative discipline and psychotherapeutic endeavour. Part I comprises five chapters written by the most prominent Authentic Movement practitioners and teachers and introducing the foundations and principles of Authentic Movement. In Part II, the contributors return to the source of Authentic Movement - the psychotherapeutic setting - and provide an in-depth examination of the personal processes in the therapeutic relationship and the potential of Authentic Movement to facilitate personal growth and change. Part III traces the development of Authentic Movement as a spiritual path and as interface with other spiritual practices. Part IV provides an overview of new developments in Authentic Movement, Part V offers inspiring personal accounts and Part VI provides guidelines drawn from practice as well as tools and resources. These latter chapters sow the seeds for a new understanding and directions for the developments of Authentic Movement. This authoritative text is indispensable for practitioners of Authentic Movement, students and teachers working in the field of dance therapy, art therapists, all creative arts therapists and body psychoanalysts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive, practical approach to the evaluation of movement disorders using phenomenological basic principles, new discoveries in phenomenological research, and core values of outpatient neurology. Movement Disorders Phenomenology begins with an overview of phenomenology and common approaches to movement disorder patients. Subsequent chapters then accurately and concisely relay information on major hypokinetic disorders such as atypical Parkinsonism, idiopathic Parkinson’s disease, cortical myoclonus, and complex motor tics. Expertly written text is further supplemented by patient vignettes at the beginning of select chapter that focus the reader's attention and highlight the urgency of the problem. These high quality videos aid in the astute clinical diagnosis of many movement disorders that are still largely dependent on visual pattern recognition in the clinic. The book closes with a timely discussion on the role of genetics in movement disorders. Written for the practicing physician, Movement Disorders Phenomenology is an indispensable reference for neurology residents, general neurologists, movement disorders fellows and clinicians, and to any clinician who encounters and evaluates patients in the outpatient arena.

Book excerpt: This book provides eloquent support for the idea that spontaneous neuron activity, far from being mere noise, is actually the source of our cognitive abilities. In a sequence of "cycles," György Buzsáki guides the reader from the physics of oscillations through neuronal assembly organization to complex cognitive processing and memory storage. His clear, fluid writing-accessible to any reader with some scientific knowledge-is supplemented by extensive footnotes and references that make it just as gratifying and instructive a read for the specialist. The coherent view of a single author who has been at the forefront of research in this exciting field, this volume is essential reading for anyone interested in our rapidly evolving understanding of the brain.

This book was released on 2018-07-24 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human speech and music share a number of similarities and differences. One of the closest similarities is their temporal nature as both (i) develop over time, (ii) form sequences of temporal intervals, possibly differing in duration and acoustical marking by different spectral properties, which are perceived as a rhythm, and (iii) generate metrical expectations. Human brains are particularly efficient in perceiving, producing, and processing fine rhythmic information in music and speech. However a number of critical questions remain to be answered: Where does this human sensitivity for rhythm arise? How did rhythm cognition develop in human evolution? How did environmental rhythms affect the evolution of brain rhythms? Which rhythm-specific neural circuits are shared between speech and music, or even with other domains? Evolutionary processes’ long time scales often prevent direct observation: understanding the psychology of rhythm and its evolution requires a close-fitting integration of different perspectives. First, empirical observations of music and speech in the field are contrasted and generate testable hypotheses. Experiments exploring linguistic and musical rhythm are performed across sensory modalities, ages, and animal species to address questions about domain-specificity, development, and an evolutionary path of rhythm. Finally, experimental insights are integrated via synthetic modeling, generating testable predictions about brain oscillations underlying rhythm cognition and its evolution. Our understanding of the cognitive, neurobiological, and evolutionary bases of rhythm is rapidly increasing. However, researchers in different fields often work on parallel, potentially converging strands with little mutual awareness. This research topic builds a bridge across several disciplines, focusing on the cognitive neuroscience of rhythm as an evolutionary process. It includes contributions encompassing, although not limited to: (1) developmental and comparative studies of rhythm (e.g. critical acquisition periods, innateness); (2) evidence of rhythmic behavior in other species, both spontaneous and in controlled experiments; (3) comparisons of rhythm processing in music and speech (e.g. behavioral experiments, systems neuroscience perspectives on music-speech networks); (4) evidence on rhythm processing across modalities and domains; (5) studies on rhythm in interaction and context (social, affective, etc.); (6) mathematical and computational (e.g. connectionist, symbolic) models of “rhythmicity” as an evolved behavior.

Book excerpt: Showing how the different types of knowledge affect nursing theory, Knowledge Development in Nursing: Theory and Process, 9th Edition helps you understand nursing theory and its links with nursing research and practice. It examines the principles of knowledge development, including the relationship between patterns of knowing, and explores how evidence-based nursing theory can be used to improve patient care. Written by nursing educators Peggy Chinn and Maeona Kramer, this edition is updated with the latest advances in theory development and additional examples of how nursing theory applies to clinical practice. Discussion of Patterns of Knowing includes empiric, personal, aesthetic, ethical, and emancipatory knowledge, defining the five different types of knowledge and how they relate to each other. Full-color map in the front of the book enhances your understanding with a visual representation of how the patterns of knowing are related. Discussion of evidence-based practice provides examples of how the five patterns of knowing may be applied to nursing practice. A comprehensive discussion of theory, theory development, and the relationship of theory to nursing research and practice helps you learn to apply theory to practice. Think About It questions sharpen your understanding of the emancipatory knowing process of praxis — critical reflection and action that transforms experience. Interpretive summaries highlight the essential features of major theories, making conceptual frameworks easier to learn and remember. A glossary defines the key terms and concepts of nursing theory. An Evolve companion website includes more case studies, a Pattern of Knowing animation, and additional learning resources.
