While silicic systems are the most researched and publicized due to their explosive character, mafic volcanoes remain the dominant form of volcanism on the earth. Eruptions are typically effusive, but changes in flow behavior can result in explosive, ash generating episodes. The efficiency of volatiles to degas from an ascending magma greatly influences eruption style. It is well known that volatile exsolution in magmas is a primary driving force for volcanic eruptions, however the roles vesicles and syn-eruptive crystallization play in eruption dynamics are poorly understood. Permeability development, which occurs when gas bubbles within a rising magma form connected pathways, has been suspected to influence eruption style and intensity. Numerous investigations on natural eruptive products, experimental samples, and analog experiments have extended the understanding of permeability development and fragmentation processes. However, these studies have focused on silicic, high viscosity, crystal-poor magmas. Little progress has been made in understanding fragmentation mechanisms in mafic or alkali magmas. Mafic systems involve lower viscosity magmas that often form small crystals, also known as microlites, during ascent. Because the merging of bubbles in magma is mitigated by melt viscosity, it is predicted that permeability development in mafic magma will occur at lower bubble volume fractions than in silicic magma. However, no study has been performed on experimental samples to provide evidence for this hypothesis. Furthermore, it is unknown how microlites affect the degassing process in terms of facilitating or hindering permeability development. This thesis employs experimental petrology to: 1) experimentally observe how melt viscosity alone affects permeability development, 2) Understand the effects of syn-eruptive crystallization in vesiculating mafic magmas and synergizes these results to 3) relate experimental findings to the 2008 eruption of Kasatochi volcano.

This emphasises the importance of a good understanding of these so-called “supervolcanic” systems and of the processes that take place in their magma chambers. Valles caldera is an ideal system in which to study these processes; its continuous sequence of eruptions provides a window into both the magma chamber primed for eruption, and into the re-establishment of the magma chamber between two super-eruptions.Volatiles play a key role in magma chambers, both as dissolved species in the melt and in exsolved vapour phases. In this thesis, I measured halogen, H2O and CO2 concentrations in melt inclusions from the Lower Bandelier Tuff (LBT), Upper Bandelier Tuff (UBT), the Valle Toledo Member (VTM) rhyolites in between, and the Deer Canyon Rhyolites at the end of the UBT sequence, in order to reconstruct volatile evolution in the Bandelier magmatic system. By comparing the behaviour of fluorine, chlorine and bromine in the eruption sequence, I concluded that large masses of Cl and Br were fractionated from the magma to a separate exsolved fluid phase. While syn-eruptive degassing of halogens was negligible in both the LBT and the UBT eruptions, the fluid phase released 4800 Tg of Cl and 5.7 Tg of Br to the atmosphere during the LBT eruption, and 2090 Tg Cl and 3.6 Tg Br in the UBT eruption. This implies the Bandelier eruptions had a severe impact on the chemistry of the paleo-atmosphere, particularly on the ozone layer.Three sharp increases to higher CO2 concentrations are recorded in the Bandelier sequence: (1) in the LBT plinian, where dissolved CO2 concentrations increase from a mean value of 27 ppm at the base of the plinian to 173 ppm in the mid-plinian; (2) in VTM group III, which at a mean of 197 ppm exhibit the highest CO2 concentrations of the entire sequence; and (3) in the UBT plinian,where CO2 concentrations increase from a mean of 54 ppm at the base of the plinian to 101 ppm in the mid-plinian. I interpret these sharp increases as the result of the injection of fresh magma into the chamber, with CO2-rich vapours that exsolved from the recharge magma percolating through the magma chamber and increasing CO2 concentrations.In a departure from volatiles, I finally focused on the importance of recharge events into the Valles caldera system. Prompted by the suggestion in previous studies that a series of hornblende-rich dacite pumices in the early-erupted UBT are related to the pre-caldera, intermediate composition Tschicoma Formation, I performed a geochemical study of the Tschicoma lava dome and lava flow complexes. Through major, trace element and isotopic analyses, I identified different evolutionary trends, which through different combinations of fractional crystallisation, assimilation of crustal material and magma mixing led to the geochemical diversity observed today. By relating the geochemistry of the Tschicoma domes to that of the dacite pumices in the UBT, I propose that a more mafic, possibly andesitic, parental magma to the Tschicoma dacites was injected into the UBT magma chamber, where it mixed with the resident UBT rhyolite magma to form the hornblende-rich dacite pumices"--

Dutton volcano, Alaska) and explosive (Volcán Ceboruco, Mexico) eruptions, as well as associated volcanic (Unalaska Formation) and plutonic (Captain's Bay pluton) suites. Major- and trace-element variations suggest that the eruptive products (both andesite and dacite) of Mt. Dutton are not simply a result of fractional crystallization, but instead are affected to varying degrees by two-component mixing of distinct and separate magmas. In this case, petrologic and geochemical evidence, as well as eruptive stratigraphy, suggests the evolution of shallow, silicic magmatic systems inferred to exist beneath small stratovolcanoes can be modeled as resulting from repeated intrusion of mantle-derived mafic magmas into shallow, silicic, crystal-rich, crustal magma chambers. Volcán Ceboruco, Mexico, erupted ̃1000 years ago, producing the Jala Pumice and forming a ̃4 km wide caldera. During that eruption, 2.8 to 3.5 km3 of rhyodacite magma and 0.2 to 0.5 km3 of mixed dacite magma were tapped and deposited as the Jala Pumice. Subsequently, the caldera was partially filled by extrusion of the Dos Equis Dome, a low-silica dacite dome with a volume of ̃1.3 km3. In this case, petrographic evidence indicates that the Jala and Dos Equis dacites originated largely through the mixing of three end-member magmas: 1) rhyodacite magma, 2) dacite magma, and 3) mafic magma. Study of the Captain's Bay pluton and Unalaska Formation volcanics from Unalaska Island, Alaska, indicates that whole-rock compositions between the two suites span a similar range and particular plutonic units correspond chemically to specific volcanic products. Plagioclase phenocrysts from these chemically similar units also display comparable textures and compositional zoning patterns. Most strikingly, magmatic enclaves found within the pluton show a chemical affinity to andesite lavas from the volcanic suite. In this case, mixing of melts and extrusion of hybrid lava may be a prompt response to recharge, whereas the enclaves may represent 'leftovers' that thermally equilibrated with the reservoir as a whole"--Leaves iii-iv.
