Book excerpt: Atmospheric-pressure plasmas continue to attract considerable research interest due to their diverse applications, including high power lasers, opening switches, novel plasma processing applications and sputtering, EM absorbers and reflectors, remediation of gaseous pollutants, excimer lamps, and other noncoherent light sources. Atmospheric-pressure plasmas in air are of particular importance as they can be generated and maintained without vacuum enclosure and without any additional feed gases. Non-Equilibrium Air Plasmas at Atmospheric Pressure reviews recent advances and applications in the generation and maintenance of atmospheric-pressure plasmas. With contributions from leading international researchers, the coverage includes advances in atmospheric-pressure plasma source development, diagnostics and characterization, air plasma chemistry, modeling and computational techniques, and an assessment of the status and prospects of atmospheric-pressure air plasma applications. The extensive application sections make this book attractive for practitioners in many fields where technologies based on atmospheric-pressure air plasmas are emerging.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arsenic Contamination in the World: an International Sourcebook provides a global compendium of cited arsenic occurrences in the world as they affect public health. This book details arsenic contamination by source, region and arsenic-affected country. Arsenic is identified in 105 countries and territories, representing a larger database than any previous published work. Sources of arsenic contamination are categorized as Anthropogenic, Geogenic, Volcanogenic, Coal, Mining and Petroleum-related. National, regional and international maps locate the affected areas and populations. A synthesis of critical country information includes an estimate of the exposed population of 226 million people worldwide. This reference work is an indispensable tool for medical doctors, public health workers, scientists, water experts, governments, industries, non-profit organizations and communities in identifying site-specific arsenic contamination. An extensive bibliography of peer-reviewed literature gives the reader important arsenic contamination locations as the first step towards remediation. This Sourcebook is updatable via an on-line annex which provides up-to-date information on new arsenic occurrences and developments. We invite readers to participate in updating this database at: http://www.iwawaterwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Articles/ExecutiveSummaryofArsenicContaminationintheWorld By synthesizing the known occurrences of arsenic world-wide, this reference book offers an essential tool for understanding and addressing the global arsenic geological-public health interface. This book was released on 2003 with total page 860 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no progress without access to energy and no energy use without supporting technology. Only one sixth of the earth's population has an easy access to sufficient energy. The other five sixth will increase their demand for energy in the future. The global environmental problems we face will increasingly affect our daily life. Adjust and fair price for energy is necessary for comparing the pros and cons of energy technology application. The road to an objective analysis of an energy system is called "Integrated Energy Analysis" and covers a cradle-to-grave system approach. This book contains such an analysis of the electricity energy system in Shandong-Province, one of China's 32 Provinces. It also presents a decision support analysis tool. It should allow decision makers in China to choose the right system of electricity supply with minimum environmental impact and/or minimum "true" cost. The book contains a DVD, which contains a more extensive record of the research results obtained. It also contains all the tools, which have been developed. The methodology presented in this book and DVD is easily applicable to other Provinces in China and also other countries and regions. This research presents a pioneering effort in bringing together the three essential partners for any such research program, Industry, Academia and the Stakeholders, i.e. prospective users of the results. An important aspect of this international program with 75 participants was the leadership provided by a dedicated and professional Program Management Team from Industry. Developing a sustainable energy supply in China is an essential part of a global strategy to promote development while mitigating environmental pollution and the effect of greenhouse gas emissions.
