Our only regret was that our friends from Mainland China did not attend. The topics covered during the 3-day symposium included areas of both basic and clinical research. The symposium has been an excellent opportunity for all the participants to exchange ideas and improve their expertise, and at the same time, to expand frontiers in the field of coagulation, fibrinolysis and platelets. The symposium was very successful both in terms of contributing greatly to raise the level of research and development in the field of thrombosis and hemostasis and in helping to promote international scientific cooperation and friendship. Many careful clini cal observations about the relationship of liver function and of bilia ry tree pathology have been published. A vast amount of research work has been devoted to the subject. The severity of the hemorrhagic disor der is usually in relation to the liver disease. In mild chronic hepa titis or short lasting obstruction slight subcutaneous or mucosal blee ding may (lraw the attention of the patient and the doctor, but they are as such far from dangerous. However in acute hepatic insufficiency, in biliary cirrhosis the bleeding tendency is to be considered as a life threatening complication in about half of the cases. Moreover coagulation disturbances aggravate bleeding not only from ruptured oesophageal or gastric varices but also from gastritis or peptic ulcer. 11enometrorrhagia, epistaxis and gingival bleeding may be very trouble some in these conditions. The use of diagnostic procedures sucl. as liver puncture biopsy and peritoneoscopy are often impossible when platelets and prothrombine time are too low. In order to overcome this difficul ty a procedure has been worked out taking a biopsy through a trans jugular catheter placed in the hepatic vein. If a bleeding from the liver occurs it will be in the circulatory system and not cause any trouble.

MUSSHOFF The group of diseases known as malignant lymphomas are, for a number of reasons, of equal interest to theoretical and clinical medicine. New findings in the fields of virology and immunology could conceivably shed some light on the so far unknown etiology of malignant lymphomas. A viral etiology could explain many of the dis parate findings with such a puzzling disease as lymphogranulomatosis, which shows both all the signs of malignancy, such as the characteristic Reed-Sternberg and Hodgkin cells and chromosome abnormalities, and those of an inflammatory disease, i.e. typical changes in the blood count and bone marrow and in the distribution of serum proteins. So far we have not been able to identify the etiology of this disease. However, clinical observations and pathomorphological investigations involving a joint effort by different branches of medicine have brought us closer to an understanding of the clinical picture. Descriptive anatomy has given us a clear picture of the regional distribution of the lymphatic system, which has long been neglected in the past. The introductory paper by Dr. S. KUBIK (Zurich), who has made valuable contributions to our knowl edge of the anatomy of the lymphatic system, deals with this subject.
