Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To most biologists, sociobiology represents the concept of strict Darwinian individual selection married to an analytical application of ecological principles and brought to bear on social behavior in an unusually exciting and productive way. Joining the biologists are a small number of social scientists. But there are radically divergent views as to how the field should be delimited, and sociobiology is one of the most widely discussed fields in biology and anthropology today. The symposium on which this book is based was arranged by a biologist and an anthropologist. The participants, leaders in their fields, ably present contrasting and responsible views on current issues. This is the first collection of essays on sociobiology in which opposing views are aired. It is an exciting, timely book and an important historical document.

Book excerpt: In the spring of 2011, a diverse group of scientists gathered at Cornell University to discuss their research into the nature and origin of biological information. This symposium brought together experts in information theory, computer science, numerical simulation, thermodynamics, evolutionary theory, whole organism biology, developmental biology, molecular biology, genetics, physics, biophysics, mathematics, and linguistics. This volume presents new research by those invited to speak at the conference. The contributors to this volume use their wide-ranging expertise in the area of biological information to bring fresh insights into the explanatory difficulties that biological information raises. Going beyond the conventional scientific wisdom, which attempts to explain biological information reductionistically via chemical, genetic, and natural selective determinants, the work represented here develops novel non-reductionist approaches to biological information, looking notably to telic and self-organizational processes. Several clear themes emerged from these research papers: 1) Information is indispensable to our understanding of what life is. 2) Biological information is more than the material structures that embody it. 3) Conventional chemical and evolutionary mechanisms seem insufficient to fully explain the labyrinth of information that is life. By exploring new perspectives on biological information, this volume seeks to expand, encourage, and enrich research on the nature and origin of biological information.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifteen years ago, Horizons in Molecular Biology symposium was conceived by the graduate students of International Max Plank Research School in Molecular Biology to widen their own horizons beyond the rut of classes and lab work. Ever since, Horizons has grown from a humble idea to one of the most sought-after events in Göttingen and Germany. Horizons aims to bridge the gap between young scientists and experienced researchers by promoting them to engage in a productive dialog and exchange information. This year, we have planned four exhilarating days of presentations, poster sessions, panel discussions, and workshops aimed to inform, inspire and pique the interest of the young, scientific mind. One could describe Horizons as a platform built to facilitate interactions between participants and speakers! We therefore invite you to engage with our roster of distinguished speakers from diverse fields of work during their presentation or even over a cup of coffee. Do not miss this opportunity to network with your favourite speakers and participants from around the world. Should you require an introduction, we are glad to help you! From academia to far and beyond! Our Career Fair is specially tailored to meet the needs and expectations of a budding researcher. In addition to our informative talks and educational workshops, we also have a ‘Speed Dating’ event where you can gain valuable insights from the diverse speakers in a personalized and informal setting. Make sure to sign up for this unique experience! The life of a PhD student can be full of many rewarding moments driven by curiosity and hardships. However, in the journey towards a PhD, the highs are often fraught with disheartening lows too. Being all too familiar with the experience, we thought that advice from those who persevered and succeeded could shed some light on the ‘tricks of the trade’. To this aim, the Panel Discussion titled ‘Troubles of a young scientist: Fantastic ideas and where to Find them’ will take place on the final day of the conference. Learning from the experiences of accomplished scientists is of vital importance, however, here at Horizons, we believe it is equally imperative to support and network with our peers. The Poster Sessions and Awarded Student Talks provide just such an opportunity. We encourage everyone to actively participate in the sessions and vote for which poster appealed to you the most! We look forward to having you here with us and hope to make this not only an educational experience, but also a memorable one.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is divided into five parts. The title of the volume refers primarily to part I, which is by far the largest and comprises papers discussing the fundamental questions of biology and related psychological and philosophical problems. Following the reproduction of papers brought to publication by Bohr, there is a separate Appendix to Part I including some of Bohr's most interesting and substantive unpublished contributions in this area. The papers in Part I span the last thirty years of Bohr's life and display his great interest in biological problems and his unremitting efforts to show that biology cannot be reduced to physics and chemistry. Part II contains articles of a more general cultural interest. Some of these show that Bohr regarded the complementary perspective to be of value also outside the scientific sphere. Part III contains the articles Bohr wrote about the great Danish philosopher Harald Høffding. These short papers are presented in a section on their own because of the continuing discussion in the history of science about Høffding's possible influence on Bohr's work in physics and his whole scientific approach. Part IV comprises articles illuminating the history of 20th century physics. Bohr had great veneration for his predecessors and teachers, and he prepared these articles with great care. Part V contains correspondence relating to the material in Parts I through IV. As in previous volumes an inventory of relevant unpublished manuscripts held at the Niels Bohr Archive constitutes an appendix to the whole volume.

Book excerpt: New Orleans has a distinguished history as a center for medical and biological learning, a history shared by Tulane University, its School of Medicine, and its Bio logical and Medical Sciences departments. This background made it especially fitting that the University, in conjunction with the Cancer Association of Greater New Orleans, Inc. and the National Cancer Institute, should sponsor the "Symposium: Biology of Amphibian Tumors" held October 28, 29, 30, 1968. The University wishes to express its appreciation to the Cancer Association for its assistance in making the Symposium possible and to acknowledge the support made available through the Bio medical Sciences Support Grant program of the National Institutes of Health. As the title of this volume indicates, the Symposium yielded valuable results in the area of cancer research and it stands to stimulate further efforts in this most important field. Some notion of the impact of this symposium is suggested by the broad range of the 200 participants it attracted. They came not only from the breadth and length of the U.S., but from abroad, from France, England, Austria, and Italy.
