Book excerpt: I completed the first draft of my second symphony in the summer of 1961. The work was inspired by a reconciliation (hence the subtitle) between two loves: science and the arts. I spent many years in my youth as an amateur astronomer (both visual and radio), studying mathematics, relativity, and quantum theory. But I also spent an equal number of years performing and composing music, painting, and writing poetry. As I wrote this work I decided my true love lay in combining these areas rather than treating them separately. My symphony then lay dormant for several years until I wrote a new version during the 1980s. The final version of the work heard here was again revised in 2004, some forty-two years from its original state, and now stands complete. As with all of my symphonies, Symphony No. 2 has five movements in a vaguely palindrome form.

Bristow is remembered today primarily for his opera Rip van Winkle (1855) and oratorio Daniel (1866), but he was also a skillful and productive composer of orchestral music¿one of only a handful of American orchestral composers active at mid-century.Bristow wrote his Symphony no. 2 (Jullien) in 1853. It is a substantial work in four movements, scored for the standard orchestra of the early nineteenth century, and strongly influenced by the personal styles of Beethoven and Mendelssohn (whose works were performed regularly by the Philharmonic Society). The symphony is skillfully crafted, melodious, and an intrinsically worthy work of musical artistry. It was named to honor the French conductor Louis Jullien, who visited the United States in 1853¿54 with an unparalleled orchestra. While in the United States Jullien both commissioned and performed American works (including this symphony); his support served as the catalyst for the Fry/Willis battle. The introductory essay to this symphony examines Bristow¿s career, the composition of orchestral music in America at mid-century, and Jullien¿s role in the musical battle; the edition makes available for the first time an important work that has been undeservedly forgotten for over 150 years.

The mature Foss is first able to blend these two disparate styles with the premiere of American Cantata in 1976, while his third (1991) and fourth (1995) symphonies show a mastery of this sort of collage. The second symphony is significant because it shows one of the composer's first attempts to reconcile two very disparate compositional approaches - yet this same process of eclectic reconciliation would fascinate Foss throughout the rest of his life, and impact other major works, such as Baroque Variations, American Cantata, Renaissance Concerto and many others. In this thesis, the tonal language of Foss's Symphony of Chorales will be examined within the context of his earlier and later styles, and the impact of collaged source material (Bach's chorale harmonizations) on the motivic and formal structure of the symphony will be discussed.
