Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book links two of the most active research areas in present day mathematics, namely Infinite Dimensional Holomorphy (on Banach spaces) and the theory of Operator Algebras (C*-Algebras and their non-associative generalizations, the Jordan C*-Algebras). It organizes in a systematic way a wealth of recent results which are so far only accessible in research journals and contains additional original contributions. Using Banach Lie groups and Banach Lie algebras, a theory of transformation groups on infinite dimensional manifolds is presented which covers many important examples such as Grassmann manifolds and the unit balls of operator algebras. The theory also has potential importance for mathematical physics by providing foundations for the construction of infinite dimensional curved phase spaces in quantum field theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive exposition of M-ideal theory, a branch ofgeometric functional analysis which deals with certain subspaces of Banach spaces arising naturally in many contexts. Starting from the basic definitions the authors discuss a number of examples of M-ideals (e.g. the closed two-sided ideals of C*-algebras) and develop their general theory. Besides, applications to problems from a variety of areas including approximation theory, harmonic analysis, C*-algebra theory and Banach space geometry are presented. The book is mainly intended as a reference volume for researchers working in one of these fields, but it also addresses students at the graduate or postgraduate level. Each of its six chapters is accompanied by a Notes-and-Remarks section which explores further ramifications of the subject and gives detailed references to the literature. An extensive bibliography is included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Symmetric cones, possibly disguised under non-linear changes of coordinates, are the building blocks of manifolds with edges, corners, or conical points of a very general nature. Besides being a canonical open set of some Euclidean space, a symmetric cone L has an intrinsic Riemannian structure of its own, turning it into a symmetric space. These two structures make it possible to define on L a pseudodifferential analysis (the Fuchs calculus). The considerable interest in pseudodifferential problems on manifolds with non-smooth boundaries makes the precise analyses presented in this book both interesting and important. Much of the material in this book has never been previously published. The methods used throughout the text rely heavily on the use of tools from quantum mechanics, such as representation theory and coherent states. Classes of operators defined by their symbols are given intrinsic characterizations. Harmonic analysis is discussed via the automorphism group of the complex tube over L. The basic definitions governing the Fuchs calculus are provided, and a thorough exposition of the fundamental facts concerning the geometry of symmetric cones is given. The relationship with Jordan algebras is outlined and the general theory is illustrated by numerous examples. The book offers the reader the technical tools for proving the main properties of the Fuchs calculus, with an emphasis on using the non-Euclidean Riemannian structure of the underlying cone. The fundamental results of pseudodifferential analysis are presented. The authors also develop the relationship to complex analysis and group representation. This book benefits researchers interested in analysis on non-smooth domains or anyone working in pseudodifferential analysis. People interested in the geometry or harmonic analysis of symmetric cones will find in this valuable reference a new range of applications of complex analysis on tube-type symmetric domains and of the theory of Jordan algebras.

Book excerpt: This book is a systematic account of the impressive developments in the theory of symmetric manifolds achieved over the past 50 years. It contains detailed and friendly, but rigorous, proofs of the key results in the theory. Milestones are the study of the group of holomomorphic automorphisms of bounded domains in a complex Banach space (Vigué and Upmeier in the late 1970s), Kaup's theorem on the equivalence of the categories of symmetric Banach manifolds and that of hermitian Jordan triple systems, and the culminating point in the process: the Riemann mapping theorem for complex Banach spaces (Kaup, 1982). This led to the introduction of wide classes of Banach spaces known as JB∗-triples and JBW∗-triples whose geometry has been thoroughly studied by several outstanding mathematicians in the late 1980s. The book presents a good example of fruitful interaction between different branches of mathematics, making it attractive for mathematicians interested in various fields such as algebra, differential geometry and, of course, complex and functional analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In several proofs from the theory of finite-dimensional Lie algebras, an essential contribution comes from the Jordan canonical structure of linear maps acting on finite-dimensional vector spaces. On the other hand, there exist classical results concerning Lie algebras which advise us to use infinite-dimensional vector spaces as well. For example, the classical Lie Theorem asserts that all finite-dimensional irreducible representations of solvable Lie algebras are one-dimensional. Hence, from this point of view, the solvable Lie algebras cannot be distinguished from one another, that is, they cannot be classified. Even this example alone urges the infinite-dimensional vector spaces to appear on the stage. But the structure of linear maps on such a space is too little understood; for these linear maps one cannot speak about something like the Jordan canonical structure of matrices. Fortunately there exists a large class of linear maps on vector spaces of arbi trary dimension, having some common features with the matrices. We mean the bounded linear operators on a complex Banach space. Certain types of bounded operators (such as the Dunford spectral, Foia§ decomposable, scalar generalized or Colojoara spectral generalized operators) actually even enjoy a kind of Jordan decomposition theorem. One of the aims of the present book is to expound the most important results obtained until now by using bounded operators in the study of Lie algebras.

Book excerpt: This first systematic account of the basic theory of normed algebras, without assuming associativity, includes many new and unpublished results and is sure to become a central resource for researchers and graduate students in the field. This first volume focuses on the non-associative generalizations of (associative) C*-algebras provided by the so-called non-associative Gelfand–Naimark and Vidav–Palmer theorems, which give rise to alternative C*-algebras and non-commutative JB*-algebras, respectively. The relationship between non-commutative JB*-algebras and JB*-triples is also fully discussed. The second volume covers Zel'manov's celebrated work in Jordan theory to derive classification theorems for non-commutative JB*-algebras and JB*-triples, as well as other topics. The book interweaves pure algebra, geometry of normed spaces, and complex analysis, and includes a wealth of historical comments, background material, examples and exercises. The authors also provide an extensive bibliography.

Book excerpt: This book reflects the proceedings of the 1996 Rocky Mountain Mathematics Consortium conference on "Composition Operators on Spaces of Analytic Functions" held at the University of Wyoming. The readers will find here a collection of high-quality research and expository articles on composition operators in one and several variables. The book highlights open questions and new advances in the classical areas and promotes topics which are left largely untreated in the existing texts. In the past two decades, the study of composition operators has experienced tremendous growth. Many connections between the study of these operators on various function spaces and other branches of analysis have been established. Advances in establishing criteria for membership in different operator classes have led to progress in the study of the spectra, adjoints, and iterates of these operators. More recently, connections between these operators and the study of the invariant subspace problem, functional equations, and dynamical systems have been exploited.

Book excerpt: This book presents the proceedings of a 1996 Joint Summer Research Conference sponsored by AMS-IMS-SIAM on "Quantization" held at Mount Holyoke College (Northampton, MA). The purpose of this conference was to bring together researchers focusing on various mathematical aspects of quantization. In the early work of Weyl and von Neumann at the beginning of the quantum era, the setting for this enterprise was operators on Hilbert space. This setting has been expanded, especially over the past decade, to involve C*-algebras - noncommutative differential geometry and noncommutative harmonic analysis - as well as more general algebras and infinite-dimensional manifolds. The applications now include quantum field theory, notable conformal and topological field theories related to quantization of moduli spaces, and constructive quantum field theory of supersymmetric models and condensed matter physics (the fractional quantum Hall effect in particular). The spectrum of research interests which significantly intersects the topic of quantization is unusually broad including, for example, pseudodifferential analysis, the representation theory of Lie groups and algebras (including infinite-dimensional ones), operator algebras and algebraic deformation theory. The papers in this collection originated with talks by the authors at the conference and represent a strong cross-section of the interests described above.
