Book Synopsis The Irish Imperial Service by : Seán William Gannon
Download or read book The Irish Imperial Service written by Seán William Gannon and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-24 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores Irish participation in the British imperial project after ‘Southern’ Ireland’s independence in 1922. Building on a detailed study of the Irish contribution to the policing of the Palestine Mandate, it examines Irish imperial servants’ twentieth-century transnational careers, and assesses the influence of their Irish identities on their experience at the colonial interface. The factors which informed Irish enlistment in Palestine’s police forces are examined, and the impact of Irishness on the personal perspectives and professional lives of Irish Palestine policemen is assessed. Irish policing in Palestine is placed within the broader tradition of the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC)-conducted imperial police service inaugurated in the mid-nineteenth century, and the RIC’s transnational influence on twentieth-century British colonial policing is evaluated. The wider tradition of Irish imperial service, of which policing formed part, is then explored, with particular focus on British Colonial Service recruitment in post-revolutionary Ireland and twentieth-century Irish-imperial identities.
Book Synopsis Death of a Hero by : Richard Aldington
Download or read book Death of a Hero written by Richard Aldington and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2013-02-26 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the great World War I antiwar novels—honest, chilling, and brilliantly satirical Based on the author's experiences on the Western Front, Richard Aldington's first novel, Death of a Hero, finally joins the ranks of Penguin Classics. Our hero is George Winterbourne, who enlists in the British Expeditionary Army during the Great War and gets sent to France. After a rash of casualties leads to his promotion through the ranks, he grows increasingly cynical about the war and disillusioned by the hypocrisies of British society. Aldington's writing about Britain's ignorance of the tribulations of its soldiers is among the most biting ever published. Death of a Hero vividly evokes the morally degrading nature of combat as it rushes toward its astounding finish. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.
Book Synopsis Machiavelli and the Modern State by : Louis Dyer
Download or read book Machiavelli and the Modern State written by Louis Dyer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 1904 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Machiavelli and the Modern State: Chapters on His "Prince," His Use of History and His Idea of Morals, Being Three Lectures Delivered in 1899 at the Royal Institution St. Thomas Aquinas. That Machiavelli's indebtedness to Dante in respect of his conception of virtu should be so numis takable seems the more startling because our author himself has been at some pains to associate his use of virtu with the nomenclature of medical diagnosis borrowed so continually.
