Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When do governments merit our allegiance, and when should they be denied it? Ian Shapiro explores this most enduring of political dilemmas in this innovative and engaging book. Building on his highly popular Yale courses, Professor Shapiro evaluates the main contending accounts of the sources of political legitimacy. Starting with theorists of the Enlightenment, he examines the arguments put forward by utilitarians, Marxists, and theorists of the social contract. Next he turns to the anti-Enlightenment tradition that stretches from Edmund Burke to contemporary post-modernists. In the last part of the book Shapiro examines partisans and critics of democracy from Plato’s time until our own. He concludes with an assessment of democracy’s strengths and limitations as the font of political legitimacy. The book offers a lucid and accessible introduction to urgent ongoing conversations about the sources of political allegiance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theory of Literature was born from the collaboration of Ren Wellek, a Vienna-born student of Prague School linguistics, and Austin Warren, an independently minded "old New Critic." Unlike many other textbooks of its era, however, this classic kowtows to no dogma and toes no party line. Wellek and Warren looked at literature as both a social product--influenced by politics, economics, etc.--as well as a self-contained system of formal structures. Incorporating examples from Aristotle to Coleridge, written in clear, uncondescending prose, Theory of Literature is a work which, especially in its suspicion of simplistic explanations and its distrust of received wisdom, remains extremely relevant to the study of literature today.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Syllabus of Lectures on the History of Education: With Selected Bibliographies and Suggested Readings This book is a revision of a Syllabus of Lectures used during the past three years with a class in the History of Education. In revising it for printing I have made such changes in arrangement and such additions and omissions as an experience of three years has seemed to indicate as desirable. It is hoped that in this new form the Syllabus and appended bibliographies will prove useful as a practical guide to teachers, librarians, and individual students. The Syllabus 1s based on a combination of the lecture and library methods, with occasional class discussions and reports. Instead of confining students to a few text-books, the aim has been to give them breadth of view by familiarizing them with the literature of the subject, and to provide some training in methods of independent work. An attempt has been made to study the history of education as a phase of the history of civilization. Accordingly a close connection has been maintained between the history of the civilization of a people and the ideas on and progress of education among them. Significant political events, changes in religious ideas, the attitude of the leaders toward the great problems, the progress of scientific discovery and invention, and the rise and progress of the scientific method and national spirit have been considered as a back-ground for the study of the history of educational theories and practice. An attempt has also been made to separate what was mere theory from what was actual practice, what was particular or local from what was general; to give some coherence to that confusing period between the Protestant Revolt and the nineteenth century; to set the work of the theorists and the reformers in a proper relation to one another and to the times in which they lived, and to point out how far they have influenced the present; and finally, to sketch the great organizing movements of the nineteenth century, taking Germany, France, and England as types. Only the slightest outline of the history of education in America is given; just enough to show the relation of the European development to our own, this subject being dealt with in another course. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of the Information Age, the fall of the traditional media, and the bewildering explosion of personal information services are all connected to the historical chain of communications' revolutions. We need to understand these revolutions because they influence our present and future as much as any other trend in history. And we need to understand them not simply on a national basis - an unstable foundation for history in any event - but rather as part of the emergent global communications network. Unlike most of the current texts in the field, Revolutions in Communication is an up-to-date resource, expanding upon contemporary scholarship. It provides students and teachers with detailed sidebars about key figures, technical innovations, global trends, and social movements, as well as supplemental reading materials, and a fully supportive companion website. Revolutions in Communication is an authoritative introduction to the history of all branches of media.
