Book Synopsis A History of South African Literature by : Christopher Heywood
Download or read book A History of South African Literature written by Christopher Heywood and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-11-18 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a critical study of South African literature, from colonial and pre-colonial times onwards. Christopher Heywood discusses selected poems, plays and prose works in five literary traditions: Khoisan, Nguni-Sotho, Afrikaans, English, and Indian. The discussion includes over 100 authors and selected works, including poets from Mqhayi, Marais and Campbell to Butler, Serote and Krog, theatre writers from Boniface and Black to Fugard and Mda, and fiction writers from Schreiner and Plaatje to Bessie Head and the Nobel prizewinners Gordimer and Coetzee. The literature is explored in the setting of crises leading to the formation of modern South Africa, notably the rise and fall of the Emperor Shaka's Zulu kingdom, the Colenso crisis, industrialisation, the colonial and post-colonial wars of 1899, 1914, and 1939, and the dissolution of apartheid society. In Heywood's study, South African literature emerges as among the great literatures of the modern world.
Book Synopsis The Boer War by : Fred R. van Hartesveldt

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One hundred years after the Boer War, the British continue to debate what went wrong, while the war has significant nationalist overtones in today's South Africa. This book examines changes in interpretations of the war and provides a bibliography of major sources on the Boer War, now sometimes called the South African War. The bibliography focuses on the military history, but also includes some historical accounts of the political debate. The first part of the book provides an extended historiographical essay, while part two provides an annotated bibliography of the titles discussed in part one. Historiographical questions concerning the Boer War are numerous. Discussions of military operations focus on the early use of modern weaponry and the effect of guerrilla tactics on a traditional force, while other historians debate the question of British military leadership and organization. Questions also revolve around British imperialism and the scramble for Africa. Frequently called the second war for freedom by South African authors, the war was the reason that South Africa, unlike other British colonies, gained independence without majority rule. This makes the war of continuing relevance to the turmoil in South Africa, the collapse of the minority government, and the continuing problems of the current government. This book will provide a useful tool for those wishing to research the war.
Download or read book Johannes Meintjes Diaries written by and published by African Sun Media. This book was released on 2024-09-25 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The artist Johannes Petrus Meintjes (19 May 1923 to 7 July 1980) was also a historian and author. Spanning a period of almost 40 years, his body of autobiographical work includes thirteen diaries. Considered Africana, Meintjes self-published the first four volumes (three Diaries and Jeugjare) through his Bamboesberg Publishers. His first diary entry was on 13 February 1941, while the last entry was recorded in 5 July 1980, two days prior to his death. The various diaries, published and unpublished, represent a collected work that tells the story of Johannes Meintjes’ life as an artist and author. This includes inscriptions on people he met, comments about political events as well as matters of faith. In this English synopsis (424 pages, illustrated with examples of his artistic output) the compilers steered clear of deeply personal, nonsensical or malicious comments, while toning down accounts of his extensive social activities. There are references to health or financial issues that affected Meintjes’ creativity and the experience of pain and sadness is also touched upon briefly where appropriate. In the end, it was Meintjes’ entry on 30 January 1964, ‘When I started on the Diary, I never realised that it would become my monument. If it were ever to appear as a single volume, who knows, it can be cut drastically’, that served as catalyst and inspiration culminating in the Afrikaans publication of the Johannes Meintjes Dagboeke launched at the Stellenbosch University Museum in 2023, a century after his birth. Publishing a synopsis of all thirteen diaries into one single volume was a project that took more than ten years. It was spearheaded by Lydia de Waal (a previous Director of the Stellenbosch University Museum) and assisted by Kobus Opperman (the Johannes Meintjes Archivist). Associate Professor Emeritus at Stellenbosch University, Dr Edwin Hees, translated the document into English. Mr Bongani Mgijia, the Director of the Stellenbosch University Museum, graciously arranged for sponsoring this translation. Amanda Botha, seasoned arts journalist, ends the book with her valued conclusion ‘The Meintjes Diaries: Mirror and Reflection’. The English translation contains additional archival material kindly made available by the Meintjes family from their personal collection.

Download or read book The Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902: 963 Days written by Pieter G Cloete and published by African Sun Media. This book was released on 2021-12-01 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the start of the Anglo-Boer War today 120 years ago thousands of publications, written or typed reports and other creations have been produced to narrate the war events, express opinions on its origins, causes, course, results and legacy and on participants in the struggle. This process is ongoing, since the debate amongst both professional historians and interested amateurs on exactly what happened and why is still raging and new information on the war still crops up. The history of the Anglo-Boer War is truly a neverending discourse. As the author of a number of books on the war, I have consulted hundreds of both published and unpublished sources. Some were of limited value, but a small percentage of the published books were of such high value that they formed part of a small stack of books that found a permanent home on my desktop while I was in the writing process. Pieter Cloete’s The Anglo-Boer War – A Chronology, both the original English version and the enlarged Afrikaans version published in 2010, was always part of that stack. It is to me a privilege to write a foreword for the user-friendly and meticulously researched book. It not only contains a wealth of information but a detailed source list and an extensive index. There are few, if any, more helpful reference books on the war and thus represents an essential resource to anyone with a more than superficial interest in the Anglo-Boer War.
