Book excerpt: Excerpt from Switching Equipment for Power Control It will also assist him in the selection and installing of new material. The secondary object is to help the student of electrical engineering in a technical school to get a better understanding of this branch of the art and to appreciate how the switching equipment ties together the various generators, transformers, feeders, etc., that make up the component parts of a generating and distributing system. Consulting engineers and others will find enough of the theoretical features to give them an understanding of the functions and limitations of the various devices. Such an understanding will facilitate specifying equipment that can be readily obtained and that will operate satisfactorily under actual conditions. The arrangement of this book has been based on the idea of first describing the switching apparatus, approximately in the order in which the various devices were developed. This is followed by considering the main connections desired in a power plant and the means for carrying out the connections so as to obtain the maximum amount of security and flexibility with the minimum outlay. Switchboard panels, control desks, etc., are considered next with the location of breakers, bus structures, etc., and the general arrangement of the part of the power plant devoted to switching equipment. Description of apparatus has been confined almost exclusively to present day standards to keep the subject matter down to a reasonable length, but a few references have been made to some of the older types of apparatus to show the progress of design. American practice, forms the basis for the descriptions and most of it is the practice of the largest electrical manufacturers. The attempt has been made to include descriptions of apparatus of other important builders, but it has been impossible to describe all of the apparatus of all the builders. The data has been obtained from various sources and the most readily available material has been used. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In the first part of the book, the mathematical description of different basic dynamic models of the DFIM will be carried out. It will be accompanied by a detailed steady-state analysis of the machine. After that, a more sophisticated model of the machine that considers grid disturbances, such as voltage dips and unbalances will be also studied. The second part of the book surveys the most relevant control strategies used for the DFIM when it operates at the wind energy generation application. The control techniques studied, range from standard solutions used by wind turbine manufacturers, to the last developments oriented to improve the behavior of high power wind turbines, as well as control and hardware based solutions to address different faulty scenarios of the grid. In addition, the standalone DFIM generation system will be also analyzed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowadays, power electronics is an enabling technology in the energy development scenario. Furthermore, power electronics is strictly linked with several fields of technological growth, such as consumer electronics, IT and communications, electrical networks, utilities, industrial drives and robotics, and transportation and automotive sectors. Moreover, the widespread use of power electronics enables cost savings and minimization of losses in several technology applications required for sustainable economic growth. The topologies of DC–DC power converters and switching converters are under continuous development and deserve special attention to highlight the advantages and disadvantages for use increasingly oriented towards green and sustainable development. DC–DC converter topologies are developed in consideration of higher efficiency, reliable control switching strategies, and fault-tolerant configurations. Several types of switching converter topologies are involved in isolated DC–DC converter and nonisolated DC–DC converter solutions operating in hard-switching and soft-switching conditions. Switching converters have applications in a broad range of areas in both low and high power densities. The articles presented in the Special Issue titled "Advanced DC-DC Power Converters and Switching Converters" consolidate the work on the investigation of the switching converter topology considering the technological advances offered by innovative wide-bandgap devices and performance optimization methods in control strategies used.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the growing interest in electrical machines in recent times, the multiphase machine field has developed into a fascinating research area. Their intrinsic features (power splitting, better fault tolerance, or lower torque ripple) make them an appealing competitor to conventional three-phase machines. Multiphase electric drives have been recently used in applications where fault tolerance and continuous operation of the drive are required. However, the difficulties in extending the three-phase conventional current regulation and control structure to multiphase systems still limit their broad applicability in industry solutions. The main objective of this book is to illustrate new advances, developments, and applications in the field of multiphase machines and drives, while exposing these advances, developments, and applications to the scientific community and industry.
