Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Language Lessons: An Elementary Grammar and Composition The present text-book is a new-modelling and rewriting of Swinton's Language Lessons. It has grown out of a double motive - first, the desire of better fitting it to fill its place as the intermediate book of the "New Language Series;" and, next, the conviction that an elementary manual might be made, which, combining the essentials of English Grammar and Composition, should find especial welcome in schools that cannot he exactly graded. The remarkable favour with which the Language Lessons was received has suggested the propriety of retaining, in the new book, at least the spirit of the old. In that work the author's theory was set forth in the following words: - "This book is an attempt to bring the subject of language home to children at the age when knowledge is acquired in an objective way, by practice and habit, rather than by the study of rules and definitions, in pursuance of this plan, the traditional presentation of grammar in a bristling array of classifications, nomenclatures, and paradigms has been wholly discarded. The pupil is brought in contact with the living language itself: he is made to deal with speech, to turn it over in a variety of ways, to handle sentences; so that lie is not kept back from the exercise - so profitable and interesting - of using language till he has mastered the anatomy of the grammarian. Whatever of technical grammar is here given is evolved from work previously done by the scholar." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secondary Education for All cannot be considered independently from the life and career of its author, R. H. Tawney. Written in 1922 in time for the general election, it is the Labour party's first major statement on adolescent education. It reflects the historical insights and ardent political convictions of an economic historian turned socialist, and helped to bring the issue of education reform from the periphery of politics to a more central position. Through the introduction of free secondary education for all, Tawney hoped to rid education of class inequality over a generation. This is a classic and influential text which acted as a springboard for educational advance which reflects the growing educational and political debate of 1920s Britain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The structure of common law has for many years been the subject of intense debate between formalists and functionalists. The former, drawing on legal realism, proposes that transactional law is a private law for interacting parties, while the later, inspired by Kant, argue it is a public law serving the collective ends of society. But what if there were a unity between functionalism and formalism? What if, in this unity, private law is modfied by a common good? In this thoroughly revised and re-written edition of his classic book 'The Unity of the Common-Law: Studies in Hegelian Jurisprudence,' Alan Brudner draws on Hegel's legal philosophy to exhibit this unity in each of transactional laws main divisions; property, contract, unjust enrichment and tort. Brudner suggests each of these divisions is composed of private-law and public-law parts that complement each other and that they are connected by a single narrative thread. This thread consists in development towards a goal. The goal is the dignity that comes with the attainment of the legal conditions necessary and sufficient for reconciling dependence with independence. Thus the end point is what a transactional law can contribute to a life sufficient for dignity.

Book excerpt: Startling new revelations about collaboration between the Allies and the German Secret Service. Based on extensive primary source research, John Bryden’s Fighting to Lose presents compelling evidence that the German intelligence service — the Abwehr — undertook to rescue Britain from certain defeat in 1941. Recently opened secret intelligence files indicate that the famed British double-cross or double-agent system was in fact a German triple-cross system. These files also reveal that British intelligence secretly appealed to the Abwehr for help during the war, and that the Abwehr’s chief, Admiral Canaris, responded by providing Churchill with the ammunition needed in order to persuade Roosevelt to lure the Japanese into attacking Pearl Harbor. These findings and others like them make John Bryden’s Fighting to Lose one of the most fascinating books about World War II to be published for many years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nineteenth-century Métis politician and mystic Louis Riel has emerged as one of the most popular - and elusive - figures in Canadian culture. Since his hanging for treason in 1885, the self-declared David of the New World has been depicted variously as a traitor to Confederation; a French-Canadian and Catholic martyr; a bloodthirsty rebel; a pan-American liberator; a pawn of shadowy white forces; a Prairie political maverick; a First Nations hero; an alienated intellectual; a victim of Western industrial progress; and even a Father of Confederation. Albert Braz synthesizes the available material by and about Riel, including film, sculpture, and cartoons, as well as literature in French and English, and analyzes how an historical figure could be portrayed in such contradictory ways. In light of the fact that most aesthetic representations of Riel bear little resemblance not only to one another but also to their purported model, Braz suggests that they reveal less about Riel than they do about their authors and the society to which they belong. The most comprehensive treatment of the representations of Louis Riel in Canadian literature, The False Traitor will be a seminal work in the study of this popular Canadian figure.
