Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First off I have to say this loud and make it very clear from the very beginning; I am a descendant of one of the royal houses of African-American pimping. Let me add, I am a proud descendant. I know what Im about to tell you is going to rustle some feathers, make no mistake about that, but thats the way its been with me all my pimping life. When I say Im a descendant of one of the royal houses, I mean it. I can back it up with bona fide DNA/geneo-logical evidence. Now then, having said that, I want to make it clear that my economic/sexual activities stem directly from my introduction to The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli and The Kama Sutra, that love treatise for the ages. And, my life long dream to explore an area of human endeavor that has seldom been explained in any reasonable way. Id like to make that the linchpin word for this book, reasonable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The figure of the violent man in the African American imagination has a long history. He can be found in 19th-century bad man ballads like "Stagolee" and "John Hardy," as well as in the black convict recitations that influenced "gangsta" rap. "Born in a Mighty Bad Land" connects this figure with similar characters in African American fiction. Many writers -- McKay and Hurston in the Harlem Renaissance; Wright, Baldwin, and Ellison in the '40s and '50s; Himes in the '50s and '60s -- saw the "bad nigger" as an archetypal figure in the black imagination and psyche. "Blaxploitation" novels in the '70s made him a virtually mythical character. More recently, Mosley, Wideman, and Morrison have presented him as ghetto philosopher and cultural adventurer. Behind the folklore and fiction, many theories have been proposed to explain the source of the bad man's intra-racial violence. Jerry H. Bryant explores all of these elements in a wide-ranging and illuminating look at one of the most misunderstood figures in African American culture.

Literary works by Hawkins, alongside fellow street lit authors, Iceberg Slim, Donald Goines, and Joseph Nazel, established the legendary Holloway House Publishing Company as a major player in the publishing world. These authors created the now thriving Street Lit Genre, earning Holloway House millions and. coincidentally cementing its place in the American pop and literary history. Hawkins a recent winner of the full rights to his catalogue from Holloway House, has partnered with Paul Stewart, CEO of OverThe Edge, to re-release his earlier ground breaking books and to promote more recent works. An original member of the famed Watts Writers Workshop - established by Budd Shulberg, and the Writer's Guild of America's "Open Door Program," his works including twenty-eight plus novels across multiple genres, several short story collections, television (here and Ghana, West Africa) film scripts, have been both celebrated and studied for years for their unique social insights. Hawkins is best known for the 17 novels he contributed to the Golden Era of the Holloway House Publishing Company. In 2012, Hawkins was featured in the critically acclaimed "Iceberg Slim: Portrait of a Pimp." He discussed Iceberg Slim's works and their impact on American Literature. Despite the fact that Odie Hawkins has not enjoyed the financial benefits of mainstream success, there is no doubt that he was there when there was a there, there. His growing fan base reassures us that his contribution to American Literature will not be underrated. "The opportunity to work with a groundbreaking author like Odie Hawkins is why I started "Over The Edge Books," explains The "Over The Edge" founder/CEO Paul Stewart. "Our company, introducing Odie Hawkins' classic material to a new generation, and to present his most recent projects is like discovering buried treasures." "Over The Edge Books" is building a solid reputation and a growing audience as The Voice of the underground cultures in music, visual arts and literature.

Book excerpt: Hawkins delivers a novel that mixes the streetwise lingo of vintage pimp fiction together with scathing satirical commentary about the spread of global capitalism, the Hurricane Katrina disaster, and the AIDS crisis in West Africa. A classic worthy of the Sweets series. Dr. Justin Gifford, Professor of English Literature, University of Nevada, Reno Peter Wright is clinging to a chimney surrounded by dirty water after Hurricane Katrina hits New Orleans when he first learns that the man he calls his father is not his real daddy. As his mother relays his shocking biological story, Peter discovers that his father is Sweet Peter Deeder II, a master pimp with a well-known reputation. Eventually rescued and sworn to secrecy by his mother, Peter grows into a street-smart fourteen-year-old who has an overwhelming desire to get to know his biological father. After his mother quietly arranges a month-long visit with his father, Peter heads to Chicago where he begins unveiling his biological history. As Sweet Peter Deeder II introduces Peter to fine cognac, expensive dinners, and his luxurious condo, Peter is provided a glimpse into the lavish lifestyle of a big-time pimp. Now known as Lil Sweets, Peter begins a journey through the world of pimping that leads him from Chicago to West Africa to Spain and back again as he explores his options and contemplates his future. In this multi-layered urban tale, a young African American on a quest for the truth must decide whether to embrace his unusual destiny or return to his old life.

Book excerpt: An enchanting intro to a collection of unforgettable characters. Bobo, Burks, Leo (sometimes, when into imaginative self-hatred, alias Tony De Medrow), Billy Woods, Herb Cross, Bruce, Mooney, Johnny Fox, Bernard Kelly, and a few others who lived in the same neighborhood and hung out on the same corners. Some of the less informed thought we were a “gang” because we spent a lot of time together, but that was the result of them being unable to penetrate the esoteric haze surrounding our relationships. There were times, to be honest, when we didn’t know what was happening either.

It is an impressionistic study of Washburne Avenue, a street on the Westside/ghetto in Chicago, filled with authentic people. As you read these pages, keep in mind, The “Sketches” happened in a time frame when there were few community programs to help people with drug issues, alcohol addiction, racism. We’ve come a long way, but we still have a long way to go, as indicated in this “Ghetto Sketches, 2021”.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The uncontested center of the black pulp fiction universe for more than four decades was the Los Angeles publisher Holloway House. From the late 1960s until it closed in 2008, Holloway House specialized in cheap paperbacks with page-turning narratives featuring black protagonists in crime stories, conspiracy thrillers, prison novels, and Westerns. From Iceberg Slim’s Pimp to Donald Goines’s Never Die Alone, the thread that tied all of these books together—and made them distinct from the majority of American pulp—was an unfailing veneration of black masculinity. Zeroing in on Holloway House, Street Players explores how this world of black pulp fiction was produced, received, and recreated over time and across different communities of readers. Kinohi Nishikawa contends that black pulp fiction was built on white readers’ fears of the feminization of society—and the appeal of black masculinity as a way to counter it. In essence, it was the original form of blaxploitation: a strategy of mass-marketing race to suit the reactionary fantasies of a white audience. But while chauvinism and misogyny remained troubling yet constitutive aspects of this literature, from 1973 onward, Holloway House moved away from publishing sleaze for a white audience to publishing solely for black readers. The standard account of this literary phenomenon is based almost entirely on where this literature ended up: in the hands of black, male, working-class readers. When it closed, Holloway House was synonymous with genre fiction written by black authors for black readers—a field of cultural production that Nishikawa terms the black literary underground. But as Street Players demonstrates, this cultural authenticity had to be created, promoted, and in some cases made up, and there is a story of exploitation at the heart of black pulp fiction’s origins that cannot be ignored.
