Book excerpt: Swedish numerals are here treated from a number of points of view - phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics. The author investigates the numerical system as a synchronic whole, but the historical relations are also studied as long as they contribute to the understanding of the growth of numerals. There are also references to other numeral systems contrasting to the Swedish one. These include: older layers and dialectal variants of the language; Danish; Icelandic; English; French; German; Tibetan; Ainu; and Malay.
Book Synopsis Nominal Phrases from a Scandinavian Perspective by : Marit Julien
Download or read book Nominal Phrases from a Scandinavian Perspective written by Marit Julien and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2005-09-22 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph presents a new model of the internal syntax of nominal phrases. The model is mainly based on Scandinavian, since with the wide range of variation that Scandinavian displays in the nominal domain, despite the close genetic relationship between the different varieties, Scandinavian is particularly well-suited for explorations into nominal syntax. Among the topics covered are the basic syntactic structure of nominal phrases, definiteness, adjective phrases, possessors, relative clauses, and nominal predicates. The model is however meant to be a tool for analysing the nominal phrases of any language. While the base-generated structure is taken to be universally uniform, the model allows for variation in the feature makeup of individual elements, in the phonological realisation of the features, and in the movements that may or may not apply. Hence, as shown in the final chapter, patterns found in languages outside of Scandinavian can also be accounted for within the model.

Book Synopsis The Circum-Baltic Languages by : Östen Dahl
Download or read book The Circum-Baltic Languages written by Östen Dahl and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The area around the Baltic Sea has for millennia been a meeting-place for people of different origins. Among the circum-Baltic languages, we find three major branches of Indo-European Baltic, Germanic, and Slavic, the Baltic-Finnic languages from the Uralic phylum and several others. The circum-Baltic area is an ideal place to study areal and contact phenomena in languages. The present set of two volumes look at the circum-Baltic languages from a typological, areal and historical perspective, trying to relate the intricate patterns of similarities and dissimilarities to the societal background. In Volume II, selected phenomena in the grammars of the circum-Baltic languages are studied in a cross-linguistic perspective.

Book Synopsis Demonstratives and Definite Articles as Nominal Auxiliaries by : Dorian Roehrs
Download or read book Demonstratives and Definite Articles as Nominal Auxiliaries written by Dorian Roehrs and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in the cartographic tradition, this monograph is concerned with the inner structure and derivation of noun phrases. It proposes that demonstratives and definite articles are similar to auxiliaries in the clause. Referencing mostly Germanic languages, the book argues that determiners are base generated below adjectives and subsequently move to the left periphery in a successive-cyclic fashion. Demonstrating that determiners are complex elements, it is proposed that languages vary with regard to when and what part of the determiner they move. This provides a novel account of the variation in the Scandinavian noun phrase. With various copies left behind by moving the determiner, the restrictive and non-restrictive readings of adjectives and relative clauses are suggested to follow from the interpretation of these different copies. The system is extended to the strong and weak adjective inflections in German. Proposing that determiners are auxiliaries in the nominal domain explains these apparently unrelated data in a uniform way.
