Book Synopsis Solid Waste Management by : Elizabeth M. Thomas-Hope
Download or read book Solid Waste Management written by Elizabeth M. Thomas-Hope and published by Canoe Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid waste has become a major consequence of development and modernization, yet some of the greatest challenges to its management are felt most keenly in the developing countries. This is part of the larger paradox of development; namely, that factors that create the most intransigent problems currently facing the developing countries are invariably those which derive from development itself. Introduction This volume presents a collection of papers which, with perspectives from Africa and the Caribbean, raise critical issues in the management of solid waste. It is intended to offer a basis for discussion among the wide range of disciplines and sectors involved in solid waste management and suggest directions for future work both in the theoretical and practical dimensions of the challenge with which developing countries are confronted.

Book Synopsis Giants of Garbage by : Harold Crooks
Download or read book Giants of Garbage written by Harold Crooks and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harold Crooks chronicles the history of waste management, showing how an ideology of privatization set the stage for the local refuse collection business to become a global corporate enterprise. The author tracks the emergence of the multinational firms that dominate the business and examines how governments fail to cope with the waste disposal needs of growing populations. He discusses the emergence of a citizens' counter-movement, communities standing up to the troubling consequences of contemporary waste disposal--huge incinerators spewing toxic metals into the atmosphere, dumps that leak toxins into the groundwater, and hazardous waste sites that must be monitored indefinitely. Giants of Garbage is a clear-eyed analysis of one of the largest and most persistent environmental issues facing Canadians today.

Book Synopsis Risk Analysis by : Constantine Zervos
Download or read book Risk Analysis written by Constantine Zervos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 739 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of the series Advances in Risk Analysis consists of papers presented at the 1988 Annual Meeting of the Society for Risk Analysis, which was held October 30 through November 2 at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC. The papers span the gamut of the increasing number of risk assessment topics addressed by the Society since it held its fIrst annual meeting in June 1981, also in Washington DC. Organized to promote interdisciplinary analyses, the Society approaches risks from three broad perspectives: (1) the impact of various risks on the health of the world's populations and on the environment; (2) the social and political implications of specifIc risks, and (3) the management and reduction of risks through the development of a risk analysis methodology and corresponding data bases. The papers included in this volume typify these three approaches and illustrate their interdependence. For example, both cancer and noncancer health risks are examined for a variety of situations that exist within society. The public's perception of risks and the correlation between that perception and the acceptance or nonacceptance of certain risks is also addressed. In addition, the progress to date on predicting and quantifying specifIc risks, including the risks associated with the construction and use of large engineered systems, is reported. Included among the papers are several dealing with recent current issues, such as the impact of California's Proposition 65, hazardous waste disposal, and chemical accidents.
