Book excerpt: In order to compete in an increasingly demanding market, many manufacturing companies have to redesign or restructure their manufacturing systems so that a set of coherent manufacturing strategies can be supported. So this book aims to provide a comprehensive treatment of manufacturing strategy analysis (MSA) and manufacturing systems design (MSD). The strategic concerns of manufacturing are linked to subsequent manufacturing systems design activities through the use of an effective MSA/MSD interface. Topics include: A structured approach to formulating manufacturing strategies; A set of linking processes to translate MSA concerns into relevant MSD action plans; Case studies. This book is intended to help graduates and industry-based professionals to make more informed decisions when working on system-design or redesign projects.

Book excerpt: It is a well acknowledged fact that virtually all of our modern-day components and assemblies rely to some extent on machining operations in their manufacturing process. Thus, there is clearly a substantive machining requirement which will continue to be of prime importance for the foreseeable future. Cutting Tool Technology provides a comprehensive guide to the latest developments in the use of cutting tool technology. The book covers new machining and tooling topics such as high-speed and hard-part machining, near-dry and dry-machining strategies, multi-functional tooling, ‘diamond-like’ and ‘atomically-modified’ coatings, plus many others. Also covered are subjects important from a research perspective, such as micro-machining and artificial intelligence coupled to neural network tool condition monitoring. A practical handbook complete with troubleshooting tables for common problems, Cutting Tool Technology is an invaluable reference for researchers, manufacturers and users of cutting tools.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes machining technology from a wider perspective by considering it within the machining space. Machining technology is one of the metal removal activities that occur at the machining point within the machining space. The machining space consists of structural configuration entities, e.g., the main spindle, the turret head and attachments such the chuck and mandrel, and also the form-generating movement of the machine tool itself. The book describes fundamental topics, including the form-generating movement of the machine tool and the important roles of the attachments, before moving on to consider the supply of raw materials into the machining space, and the discharge of swarf from it, and then machining technology itself. Building on the latest research findings “Theory and Practice in Machining System” discusses current challenges in machining. Thus, with the inclusion of introductory and advanced topics, the book can be used as a gui de and survey of machining technology for students and also as the basis for the planning of future research by professors and researchers in universities and scientific institutions. Professional engineers can use the book as a signpost to technical developments that will be applied in industry in coming years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first part of Volume I outlines the origins and development of CNC machine tools. It explains the construction of the equipment and also discusses the various elements necessary to ensure high quality of production. The second part considers how a company justifies the purchase of either cells or systems and illustrates why simulation exercises are essential prior to a full implementation. Communication protocols as well as networking topologies are examined. Finally, the important high-speed machining developments and the drive towards ultra-high precision are mentioned. Following a brief historical introduction to cutting tool development, chapters 1 and 2 of Volume II explain why CNC requires a change in cutting tool technology from conventional methods. A presentation is given of the working knowledge of cutting tools and cutting fluids which is needed to make optimal use of the productive capacity of CNC machines. Since an important consideration for any machine tool is how one can locate and restrain the workpiece in the correct orientation and with the minimum of set-up time, chapter 3 is concerned with workholding technology. Volume III deals with CNC programming. It has been written in conjunction with a major European supplier of controllers in order to give the reader a more consistent and in-depth understanding of the logic used to program such machines. It explains how why and where to program specific features of a part and how to build them up into complete programs. Thus, the reader will learn about the main aspects of the logical structure and compilation of a program. Finally, there is a brief review of so me of the typical controllers currently available from both universal and proprietary builders.

The book contains the proceedings of the 10th International M.T.D.R. Conference held at the University of Manchester in September 1969. The selection first discusses examples and problems in the implementation of modern design features on large machine tools and development of numerically controlled conventional turning machines. The book reviews the theory and practice of fluid dampers in machine tools, including eccentricity of cylindrical film dampers, border effect, and vapor and gas pressure. The text also discusses tool life vibrations of grinding wheels as a function of vibration amplitude; thermal deformations of gear-cutting machines; thermal behavior of machine tools; and the effects of thermal deformation on the cylindrical accuracy in grinding process. The book also takes a look at the trends in manufacturing systems concepts and technical criteria to be used when purchasing machine tools. The selection is a dependable reference for readers interested in machine tool design.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origins of this book are in my first attempts to understand psychology as a post-war student in the Cambridge of the late 1940s. Sir Frederic Bartlett and his colleagues in the Psychology Department were talking and writing about the concept of the skill as the fundamental unit of behaviour. This made entire sense to me but not apparently to very many other people because the movement dwindled rapidly with the retirement of Sir Frederic in 1952. It got lost within performance studies which were essentially behaviouristic and stimulus-response in origin, a quite different style of thinking from the gestalt approach of skill psychology. This is not a simple dichotomy of course and skill psychology does go some way towards the analytic approach in accepting that a science needs to have a basic element, a unit from which the complexities of real behaviour can be constructed. into which it can be analysed and in terms of which it can be described and understood. The trick is to pick the right unit and I think that skills is an appropriate unit for human behaviour. Note the plural, although these units are elements they are not identical any more than the ninety-odd elements of the physical world are identical. The issue is sometimes clarified by considering the analogy with the attempt to describe a house. The simplest observable elements here are the brick. the piece of stone or the piece of wood.

Book excerpt: Control Problems and Devices in Manufacturing Technology 1980 presents the proceedings of the 3rd IFAC/IFIP Symposium on Control Problems and Devices in Manufacturing Technology, held in Budapest, Hungary, on October 22–25, 1980. This book discusses the increasing use of robots in both machining and assembly. Organized into 49 chapters, this compilation of papers begins with an overview of the development in computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing. This text then explores the application of computers to the automation of manufacturing processes that have resulted in great progress. Other chapters consider the theoretical aspects and devices concerning material handling, machine control, automatic measurement, and inspection. This book discusses as well the significant roles of numerically controlled machine-tools and robots in the manufacturing system. The final chapter deals with identification and optimal operation of cyclic mechanisms. This book is a valuable resource for control and plant engineers as well as for control system designers.
