Book excerpt: DECENT PEOPLE. DESPERATE MEASURES. The folks of remote, mountainous Trout Run, New York, are shocked when Mary Pat Sheehan's body is found in her crashed car. They're even more stunned when an autopsy reveals it wasn't the crash that killed her -- but complications from childbirth. No one even knew that cheerful, reliable, and unmarried Mary Pat was pregnant. In a town where everyone knows everyone's business, how did she hide her pregnancy? Where is her baby? And who is the father? These daunting questions lead Police Chief Frank Bennett into the shadowy world of black market adoption scams, where panicked young women and desperate, childless couples play a high-stakes game. to prevent another tragedy, Frank must unravel a tangle of family secrets and unlikely alliances. But stepping closer to the truth puts Frank squarely in a killer's sights. Because when greed and love both fuel the fire, everyone gets burned.

Book excerpt: In Eating by Faith, Lisabeth invites you into the secret world of her eating disorder, and recovery. And while the illness looks different for every patient, all share a commonality of symptoms physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Eating by Faith will bring you into the mind and heart of someone suffering from the illness in such a brutally honest way, that you will have a greater understanding of the mind and heart of anyone suffering from this illness. Her eating disorder, like most, takes root inside a secret place. This root is often anchored in the lies Satan would have us believe about ourselves. Once established, he will use the eating disorder to separate us from God, robbing us from our joy and our identity in Christ's unconditional love. Lisabeth's story is one of wrestling with the eating disorder, herself, and God. It is about finding her identity in the love of Christ instead of her illness. Taste and See...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of the Six Fields of the Senses receives its name from the homonymous saṃyutta with which it begins and is the dominant one in terms of its length and doctrinal weight. This saṃyutta makes a functional analysis of all the processes involved with the relationship with the exterior, where it is shown that none of them is controlled. For example, with respect to sight, for example, the objective, that which is seen is not controlled. The subjective, which is the eye, is not controlled, you cannot make the eye see as you wish. Neither the eye contact nor the qualia as a result are controlled. Where the eye, the visual figures, the eye contact and the visual qualia are, there is the world or what is known as the world. Therefore, the relationship with the world is uncontrollable or, which is the same thing, it is not me. What is not controlled is unpleasant and causes suffering. We are before the description of the slavery that Samsara means. Following the functional analysis we have the following booklet dedicated to emotional reactions which contains 31 discourses on the three types of emotional reactions: pleasant, unpleasant and indifferent. In the process of experience, emotional reactions arise from qualia and stimulate craving. The result of the analysis is that, although emotional reactions are still experienced, they do not induce craving. The next saṃyutta is dedicated to women with their virtues and defects. The next four, relate to persons and a fifth to chiefs. The two closing saṃyuttas relate to Nibbāna and everything unstated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Katrina Firlik is a neurosurgeon, one of only two hundred or so women among the alpha males who dominate this high-pressure, high-prestige medical specialty. She is also a superbly gifted writer–witty, insightful, at once deeply humane and refreshingly wry. In Another Day in the Frontal Lobe, Dr. Firlik draws on this rare combination to create a neurosurgeon’s Kitchen Confidential–a unique insider’s memoir of a fascinating profession. Neurosurgeons are renowned for their big egos and aggressive self-confidence, and Dr. Firlik confirms that timidity is indeed rare in the field. “They’re the kids who never lost at musical chairs,” she writes. A brain surgeon is not only a highly trained scientist and clinician but also a mechanic who of necessity develops an intimate, hands-on familiarity with the gray matter inside our skulls. It’s the balance between cutting-edge medical technology and manual dexterity, between instinct and expertise, that Firlik finds so appealing–and so difficult to master. Firlik recounts how her background as a surgeon’s daughter with a strong stomach and a keen interest in the brain led her to this rarefied specialty, and she describes her challenging, atypical trek from medical student to fully qualified surgeon. Among Firlik’s more memorable cases: a young roofer who walked into the hospital with a three-inch-long barbed nail driven into his forehead, the result of an accident with his partner’s nail gun, and a sweet little seven-year-old boy whose untreated earache had become a raging, potentially fatal infection of the brain lining. From OR theatrics to thorny ethical questions, from the surprisingly primitive tools in a neurosurgeon’s kit to glimpses of future techniques like the “brain lift,” Firlik cracks open medicine’s most prestigious and secretive specialty. Candid, smart, clear-eyed, and unfailingly engaging, Another Day in the Frontal Lobe is a mesmerizing behind-the-scenes glimpse into a world of incredible competition and incalculable rewards.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No other nonhuman source has served as the basis for more metaphors than animals. Speaking of Animals is a dictionary of animal metaphors that are current in American English. It is comprehensive, historical, and metaphor-based. Each entry refers to the other dictionaries that catalog that same metaphor, and the dates of first appearance in writing are supplied, where possible, for both the metaphor and the name of the source. The main text is organized alphabetically by metaphor rather than by animal or animal behavior; all the metaphors are classified according to their animal source in a list at the end of the book. An animal metaphor is a word, phrase, or sentence that expresses a resemblance or similarity between someone or something and a particular animal or animal class. True metaphors are single words, such as the noun tiger, the verb hog, and the adjective chicken. Phrasal metaphors combine true metaphors with other words, such as blind tiger, hog the road, and chicken colonel. Other animal metaphors take the form of similes, such as like rats leaving a sinking ship and prickly as a hedgehog. Still others take the form of proverbs, such as Don't count your chickens before they hatch and Let sleeping dogs lie. The horse is the animal most frequently referred to in metaphors, followed closely by the dog. The Bible is the most prolific literary source of animal metaphors, followed closely by Shakespeare.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a complete translation of the Samyutta Nikaya, The Connected Discourses of the Buddha, the third of the four great collections in the Sutta Pitaka of the Pali Canon. The Samyutta Nikaya consists of fifty-six chapters, each governed by a unifying theme that binds together the Buddha's suttas or discourses. The chapters are organized into five major parts. The first, The Book with Verses, is a compilation of suttas composed largely in verse. This book ranks as one of the most inspiring compilations in the Buddhist canon, showing the Buddha in his full grandeur as the peerless "teacher of gods and humans." The other four books deal in depth with the philosophical principles and meditative structures of early Buddhism. They combine into orderly chapters all the important short discourses of the Buddha on such major topics as dependent origination, the five aggregates, the six sense bases, the seven factors of enlightenment, the Noble Eightfold Path, and the Four Noble Truths. Among the four large Nikayas belonging to the Pali Canon, the Samyutta Nikaya serves as the repository for the many shorter suttas of the Buddha where he discloses his radical insights into the nature of reality and his unique path to spiritual emancipation. This collection, it seems, was directed mainly at those disciples who were capable of grasping the deepest dimensions of wisdom and of clarifying them for others, and also provided guidance to meditators intent on consummating their efforts with the direct realization of the ultimate truth. The present work begins with an insightful general introduction to the Samyutta Nikaya as a whole. Each of the five parts is also provided with its own introduction, intended to guide the reader through this vast, ocean-like collection of suttas. To further assist the reader, the translator has provided an extensive body of notes clarifying various problems concerning both the language and the mean

However, for many years, care of injured wildlife was regarded as a low priority and euthanasia was the recommended option. A lot has changed over the past twenty years and now caring for wildlife casualties is part of everyday life in many veterinary practices. Following on from the major success of the first edition, this second edition provides even more useful information on wildlife care and rehabilitation. As well as covering a whole range of species, with sections on birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, this edition now includes information on many 'alien' species appearing in the British countryside such as wallabies, wild boar and exotic reptiles. In this edition: * Essential guidance on handling, first aid, feeding and releasing, and many other disciplines not featured in veterinary or nursing training; * Full of helpful tips from an expert in wildlife rehabilitation who has unparalleled practical experience; * Expanded chapters on the care of all species - particularly casualty badgers, otters and hedgehogs - and more comprehensive guidance on rearing orphaned mammals and birds; * Lots more colour pictures to aid in management and care techniques and the latest information on zoonotic diseases from around the world.
