Book excerpt: Dr. Vijay Mallya is not your typical everyday CEO. He has made it to the Forbes billionaires' list many number of times but he doesn't care if he is on the list or not because he doesn't want to be categorized as a ruthless moneymaker. He not only lives like The King of Good Times but he is working overtime to persuade others to live the high life too. Once upon a time, his critics called him the playboy of the east for his glamorous lifestyle but slowly and steadily Dr. Mallya has earned the respect of his detractors. After the launch of Kingfisher Airlines in 2005, he was chosen as the Indian Businessman of the year. The Indian government honored him with the Outstanding Business Leader Award and ETNow selected Dr. Mallya as one of the three big movers and shakers of the first decade of 21st century corporate India. After his father's untimely death, Dr. Mallya became the CEO of a hundred million dollar UB Group and grew it into a multi-billion dollar global empire. He is a genius of a businessman who is the ultimate brand ambassador of his company UB Group. He sets himself high goals and works round the clock to achieve them. His out-of-the-box thinking and business strategies have revolutionized the way brand equity could be grown by businesses in the country. He is a supreme human being and so his business rivals and political rivals are usually surprised by Dr. Mallya's magnanimity. As a politician, Dr. Mallya has been trying really hard to change the Indian political landscape. He is a brand marketing genius but for him, superior customer service always comes first. He goes to extreme lengths to make sure customers are satisfied by his products and services. Dr. Mallya is also a sports fanatic. He owns the Force India Formula One team and has been an instrumental figure in bringing the Formula One Grand Prix championship race to India. He also owns the Indian Premier League cricket team called the Royal Challengers and is very much involved in making a successful championship run for the team. He is also the man who has changed horse racing in India from a gambling den to a classy entertainment venue. For all the critics who downplayed Dr. Mallya's success and bashed his playboy image, it is not surprising that he is having the last laugh. Dr. Mallya and his future generations are set to carry on the Mallya legacy successfully. Long live the King of Good Times.

The main is to develop an understanding of the dynamics and vectors of change in the Kaoko's African societies gradually being placed under colonial rule. With a focus on socio-economic processes the thesis explores the continuous reconstitution of gender roles and relations and anchors its argument on an integrated analysis of archival written and visual sources as well as on oral knowledge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Windhoek in the early 1960s: the 34-year-old politician Clemens Kapuuo knocks at the door of the senior advocate Israel Goldblatt to solicit advice regarding the myriad of difficulties encountered by Africans daily under the apartheid regime. An unusual relationship and friendship develops, one that transcends the racial divide in this South African-governed Territory and will last for nearly 10 years. Meeting in Goldblatt's chambers, at his home and in the Old Location, other participants in the consultations included the veteran politician Chief Hosea Kutako and a group of younger nationalists, among them Rev. Bartholomews Karuaera and Levy Nganjone. Through Kapuuo, Goldblatt also met Kaptein Samuel Witbooi and counselled the long-term prisoner from Caprivi, Brendan Simbwaye. Israel Goldblatt's notes on these meetings were discovered after his death and form the core of this book. They are complemented by additional biographical information about his interlocutors, and annotations that place his notes in their historical and political context. Illustrated with many photographs, this publication pays tribute to Israel Goldblatt and the Namibian nationalists who attempted to build bridges where apartheid entrenched racism and suspicion.

This book was released on 2014-08-14 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking the history of trade and of traders as its subject matter, this book offers the first economic history of northern Namibia during the twentieth century. It traces Namibias way from a rural, largely self-relying society into a globalised economy of consumption. This transformation built on colonial economic activities, but it was crucially shaped by local traders, a new social elite emerging during the 1950s and 1960s. Becoming a trader was one of the few possibilities for black Namibians to gain monetary income at home. It was a pathway out of migrant labour, to new status in the local society and often to prosperity. Politically, most traders occupied a middle ground: content of their own social position, but intent on political emancipation from colonial rule. Economically, their energy and business acumen transformed northern Namibia into an increasingly urban consumer society. The development path they chose, however, depended too much on the colonial reserve economy to remain sustainable after 1990. Their legacy still shapes spatial and social structures in northern Namibia, but most traders businesses have today closed down. By telling the history of the rise and decline of traders and trade in northern Namibia, this book is thus also a reflection on the conundrums of economic development under conditions of structural inequality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ellen Ndeshi Namhila is intrigued by the question: Why can the National Archives of Namibia respond to genealogical enquiries of Whites in a matter of minutes with finding estate records of deceased persons, while similar requests from Blacks cannot be served? Not satisfied with the sweeping statement that this is the result of colonialism and apartheid, she follows the track of so-called “Native estates” through legislation, record creation and dispersal, records management and administrative neglect, authorised and unauthorised destruction, transfer and appraisal, selective processing, and (almost) final amnesia. Eventually she discovers over 11,000 forgotten surviving African estate records – but also evidence for the destruction of many others. And she demonstrates the potential of these records to interpret the lives of those who otherwise appear in history only as statistics – records which were condemned to destruction by colonial archivists stating they had “little research value and no functional value.” This study of memory against forgetting is a call to post-colonial archives to re-visit their holdings and the systemic colonial bias that continues to haunt them. This is the revised version of Ellen Namhila’s 2015 doctoral thesis published at the University of Tampere, Finland.

Book excerpt: This volume shows how hunter gatherer societies maintain their traditional lifeways in the face of interaction with neighboring herders, farmers, and traders. Using historical, anthropological and archaeological data and cases from Africa, Australia, and Southeast Asia, the authors examine hunter gatherer peoples—both past and present--to assess these relationships and the mechanisms by which hunter gatherers adapt and maintain elements of their culture in the wider world around them.
