Book excerpt: This research, carried out in original documents by the World Bank, which were intended exclusively for internal use and were made available to scholars only a few years ago, tackles the theme of the extraordinary intervention in Southern Italy from an international perspective. The book provides an updated view of the issues concerning the regions of Southern Italy, as well as the solutions proposed for the “Southern Question” during the years of the post-war reconstruction of Italy, creating the only period of convergence – considering the whole of the history of united Italy – between Southern and Northern Italy and between the entire country and the most advanced Western economies during the golden age. The volume enhances our understanding of such a decisive development phase, especially within the framework of both Italian and international economic history, following the peacetime rebuilding of Italy and before the crisis of the 1970s, while providing very useful elements in order to analyse the current events of both the Mezzogiorno and all of Italy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Second-rank cities are back on the academic scene, capturing the interest of scholars with their unexpected recent performance with respect to first-rank cities. Looking at the data on average urban GDP growth in 139 European cities since 1996, the relatively strong position of large cities (over 1.5 million inhabitants) on national growth coincides with the periods of fastest expansion, while at times of slowdown second-rank cities prevail. Especially in the recent period of economic downturn, second-rank cities have recorded annual GDP growth rates much less negative than those of capital cities; and in some European countries, like Austria and Germany, all cities have outperformed their capitals. In explaining this phenomenon, linking urban dynamics to agglomeration theories seems the most interesting approach. However, merely to link agglomeration economies to urban size in order to interpret urban performance is neither convincing nor sufficient, and it calls for additional investigation into how agglomeration economies work. This volume claims that interpretation of the current dynamics in European urban systems – especially in the western part of Europe – would benefit from exploitation of the traditional concept of agglomeration economies. However, necessary for this purpose are more in-depth considerations on the nature, scope, intensity, and causes of agglomeration economies which do not relate their existence solely to urban size. And this is where the main challenge for scholars lies, in the interpretation of the missing link between agglomeration economies and urban dynamics. This book was originally published as a special issue of European Planning Studies.

Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this volume situates the Italian urban system within a European context, examining the best approach to integration. Connections between urban development, territorial cohesion and the European urban system have been clearly identified by Europe 2000 (1991) and identified as primary instruments for achieving social and economic cohesion and competitiveness as per the Treaty of Maastricht and the White Paper, Growth, Competitiveness, Employment (1993). This book aids this endeavour through featuring contributions on cities as nodes of transport networks, economic change, the demographic transition, the local milieu, regional cohesion and global networks and how the system can integrate into European urban networks.
