Book Synopsis Towards User-Centric Transport in Europe by : Beate Müller
Download or read book Towards User-Centric Transport in Europe written by Beate Müller and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-18 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to build a sustainable transport system for people and goods that meets the needs of all users, a truly integrated and seamless approach is needed, and the full potential of transformative technologies has to be exploited. This can only be achieved if user-centeredness, cross-modality and technology transfer become the paradigm of shaping future transport. Mobility4EU is a project funded by the European Commission that focusses on these topics and is working on delivering an action plan towards a user-centric and cross-modal European transport system in 2030. The authors of this contributed volume are dedicated scholars and practitioners connected to Mobility4EU either as partners or external contributors. Their contributions focus on understanding user needs and report on technologies and approaches that support the tailoring of a user-centered cross-modal transport system for passengers and freight on long distances and in the urban context.

Book Synopsis Achieving Sustainable Mobility by : Erling Holden
Download or read book Achieving Sustainable Mobility written by Erling Holden and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-16 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable mobility has become the new imperative for transport policy. There have been a number of policy attempts at sustainable mobility globally, such as the development of more efficient conventional transport technologies, the promotion of efficient and affordable public transport systems and the encouragement of environmental awareness. Such policies have so often been presented as prerequisites for sustainable mobility that they are now taken for granted. But are any of these policies really successful? To what extent do they actually contribute (or fail to contribute) to sustainable mobility? Why do some policies succeed and others fail? Using an interdisciplinary approach which brings together various theories and methodologies, this book tests each of these policies - or hypotheses, as the author sees them - with detailed empirical investigations. It also argues that leisure-time travel should be included in any sustainable mobility policies, as it now accounts for 50 per cent of all annual travel distance in developed countries. The book concludes by suggesting fourteen theses of sustainable mobility for the EU and a new model for future best practice.
Book Synopsis Social Change and Sustainable Transport by : William Richard Black
Download or read book Social Change and Sustainable Transport written by William Richard Black and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2002-11-29 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transportation research has traditionally been dominated by engineering and logistics research approaches. This book integrates social, economic, and behavioral sciences into the transportation field. As its title indicates, emphasis is on socioeconomic changes, which increasingly govern the development of the transportation sector. The papers presented here originated at a conference on Social Change and Sustainable Transport held at the University of California at Berkeley in March 1999, under the auspices of the European Science Foundation and the National Science Foundation. The contributors, who represent a range of disciplines, including geography and regional science, economics, political science, sociology, and psychology, come from twelve different countries. Their subjects cover the consequences of environmentally sustainable transportation vs. the "business-as-usual" status quo, the new phenomenon of "edge cities," automobile dependence as a social problem, the influence of leisure or discretionary travel and of company cars, the problems of freight transport, the future of railroads in Europe, the imposition of electronic road tolls, potential transport benefits of e-commerce, and the electric car.

Book Synopsis A U-Turn to the Future by : Martin Emanuel
Download or read book A U-Turn to the Future written by Martin Emanuel and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2020-02-01 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From local bike-sharing initiatives to overhauls of transport infrastructure, mobility is one of the most important areas in which modern cities are trying to realize a more sustainable future. Yet even as politicians and planners look ahead, there remain critical insights to be gleaned from the history of urban mobility and the unsustainable practices that still impact our everyday lives. United by their pursuit of a “usable past,” the studies in this interdisciplinary collection consider the ecological, social, and economic aspects of urban mobility, showing how historical inquiry can make both conceptual and practical contributions to the projects of sustainability and urban renewal.
Book Synopsis Transport, Climate Change and the City by : Robin Hickman
Download or read book Transport, Climate Change and the City written by Robin Hickman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-05 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable mobility has long been sought after in cities around the world, particularly in industrialised countries, but also increasingly in the emerging cities in Asia. Progress however appears difficult to make as the private car, still largely fuelled by petrol or diesel, remains the mainstream mode of use. Transport is the key sector where carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions seem difficult to reduce. Transport, Climate Change and the City seeks to develop achievable and low transport CO2 emission futures in a range of international case studies, including in London, Oxfordshire, Delhi, Jinan and Auckland. The aim is that the scenarios as developed, and the consideration of implementation and governance issues, can help us plan for and achieve attractive future travel behaviours at the city level. The alternative is to continue with only incremental progress against CO2 reduction targets, to ‘sleepwalk’ into climate change difficulties, oil scarcity, a poor quality of life, and to continue with the high traffic casualty figures. The topic is thus critical, with transport viewed as central to the achievement of the sustainable city and reduced CO2 emissions.
Book Synopsis Unsustainable Transport by : David Banister
Download or read book Unsustainable Transport written by David Banister and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2005 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the links between transport and sustainable urban development, from an analysis of the global picture to issues in transport and energy intensity, public policy and the institutional and organisational constraints on change. The central part of the book explores these links in more detail at city level, covering land use and development, economic measures, and the role that technology can play. The final part looks for inspiration from events in developing countries and the means by which we can move from the unsustainable present to a more sustainable future.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Research on Promoting Sustainable Public Transportation Strategies in Urban Environments by : Yilmaz, Zafer
Download or read book Handbook of Research on Promoting Sustainable Public Transportation Strategies in Urban Environments written by Yilmaz, Zafer and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2023-01-16 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The traditional urban transportation systems around the globe are now being transferred into green public transportation systems in an effort to mitigate CO2 emissions and provide nature-friendly transportation systems in cities and, ultimately, to increase citizens’ wellbeing. Furthermore, the cities are expected to transform their traditional transportation systems to cutting-edge high technology green transportation systems in the near future due to regulations applied by the related authorities such as the EU and UN. At the same time, cities are undergoing a transformation from traditional to smart cities, which is an inevitable process due to swift developments in technologies and smart systems. Sustainable public transportation systems must be developed and adjusted to be applicable in future smart cities. The Handbook of Research on Promoting Sustainable Public Transportation Strategies in Urban Environments considers the challenges and advantages of sustainable public transportation systems in urban areas and provides relevant theoretical frameworks, the latest empirical research findings, and an overview of the latest technological developments on the subject. Covering key topics such as green vehicles, sustainability, and walkable cities, this major reference work is ideal for policymakers, government officials, industry professionals, researchers, scholars, practitioners, academicians, instructors, and students.
