Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continued population growth, rapidly changing consumption patterns and the impacts of climate change and environmental degradation are driving limited resources of food, energy, water and materials towards critical thresholds worldwide. These pressures are likely to be substantial across Africa, where countries will have to find innovative ways to boost crop and livestock production to avoid becoming more reliant on imports and food aid. Sustainable agricultural intensification - producing more output from the same area of land while reducing the negative environmental impacts - represents a solution for millions of African farmers. This volume presents the lessons learned from 40 sustainable agricultural intensification programmes in 20 countries across Africa, commissioned as part of the UK Government's Foresight project. Through detailed case studies, the authors of each chapter examine how to develop productive and sustainable agricultural systems and how to scale up these systems to reach many more millions of people in the future. Themes covered include crop improvements, agroforestry and soil conservation, conservation agriculture, integrated pest management, horticulture, livestock and fodder crops, aquaculture, and novel policies and partnerships.

Book excerpt: This study was produced under an FAO-EBRD Cooperation project on reviewing the development potential of the tea sectors of Azerbaijan and Georgia. As a result of the joint research in the two countries carried out as part of the project, a similar separate review of the Azerbaijani tea sector was also published under the FAO Investment Centre's Knowledge for Investment (K4I) programme. Tea has a long tradition of cultivation in Azerbaijan and Georgia, dating back to the nineteenth century. The structural changes that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s led to a dramatic decline of the two countries’ tea sectors. However, interest in tea production in Georgia and Azerbaijan has increased in recent years and, in an effort to revive their once thriving tea sectors, governments have adopted sector development programmes that provide for support to primary tea production. In spite of the long tradition and accumulated know-how of tea production and processing, there is little doubt that investments in both technology and knowledge will be required for the Azerbaijani and Georgian tea sectors to grow in a successful and sustainable way. Production focused on efficiency and quality and mindful of shifts in consumer preferences on global markets, but also of potential environmental risks, will be critical in achieving this goal. This publication is part of the Country Investment Highlights series under the FAO Investment Centre's Knowledge for Investment (K4I) programme.

This book was released on 2022-05-05 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2022 in the subject History - Africa, grade: 3.5/4, , course: Social Science in Statistics, language: English, abstract: Tea is the leading export cash crop and a highly consumed beverage in Kenya. Small scale farmers are more than large scale farmers in Kenya. However, they own small sizes of land which is a limiting factor to tea production. Analysis of trends is an aspect of technical analysis that tries to predict the future movement of stock based on past data. The main objectives of this study is To construct a suitable time series model for the data, To determine the correlation between production and size of land, To forecast tea production Examples of analysis of trends are total monthly sales receipts in a departmental store and total monthly production by company. This research project was on the trends of tea production and area under tea that are collected annually since 1963 to 2015 and to construct a time series model of a suitable order for the process. The large scale size of land mean is 34882.04 hectares and the average small scale size of land is 4563.25 hectares .For the stationarity of the data the Dickey-Fuller test (ADF); Dickey-Fuller = -1.9254, Lag order = 3, p-value = 0.6045.The correlation of the large scale and small scale holders is; 0.9588537 and 0.9339925 hence strong linear relationship . The best possible models for modelling large scale is ARIMA (2, 1, 0) with Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) of 1885.73 and for Small scale farmers it ARIM(1,1,0) with AIC of 1915.76. The rate of change of the predicted tea production is 0.97 which is a very low rate. These values show that in the next 20 years there will be no significant changes in tea production in Kenya.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the ability of market-based instruments to improve the sustainable provision of environmental services. The author combines field research and insights from the multi-stakeholder dialogue at the FAO to analyze the gap between the predictions provided by theory and the corresponding outcomes in practice. In particular, the author challenges the theory behind Payments for Environmental Services (PES), a concept derived from neoclassical welfare economics, by demonstrating that PES projects often lack financial sustainability unless local entrepreneurs make use of the resulting new networks to create innovative markets for environmental goods. The author calls for a shift of focus from regulation to innovation in projects and policies designed to improve the provision of environmental services. Its spotlight on the positive social impacts of companies that engage in hybrid PES schemes will make the book appealing to practitioners and policymakers alike.
