This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apart from high cost, increased concern for environmental and health hazards has called for a reduction in the use of synthetic nematicides for nematode control. In vitro studies in Petri dishes showed that castor bean extracts had toxic effect on eggs and juveniles of root knot nematodes. Egg hatch inhibition and juvenile mortality decrease with increased dilution of the extract. With an increase in exposure time, juvenile mortality increased.Trials were conducted to observe the effect of the extract on root-knot nematode and some growth parameters of tomato plant in pot. Seedlings either dipped, side-drenched or a combination of both with different concentrations of castor bean extracts showed that plant height, stem girth, fresh shoot and root weights of extract-treated plants were significantly different from those of the control plants. Numbers of root-knot juveniles and galls on the roots of the extract-treated plants were significantly different from those of the control. The crude castor bean extract was nematotoxic to root-knot nematodes in vitro and potted tomato. This study should help shed light on the use of botanicals in managing plant parasitic nematodes on vegetables.

This book was released on 2022-09-12 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present work covers many aspects of plant nematode management using organic strategies. These range from applications of latest understandings of fundamental concepts/mechanisms of nematode control, to modern tools and techniques used in efficacy evaluation. The Volume also includes some case studies/applied aspects of organic nematode pest management. Chemical and physical control measures used for nematode management have their own implications. Against this backdrop, organic management of plant nematodes appears as a more rational and sustainable approach. However, concise information on the current topic is scarce. This book is a sincere effort to bridge this void as we aim to provide the most updated, critical and in-depth knowledge synthesized by many experts working in the field of plant nematology, worldwide.
Book Synopsis Integrated Nematode Management by : Richard A. Sikora
Download or read book Integrated Nematode Management written by Richard A. Sikora and published by Cabi. This book was released on 2021 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant parasitic nematodes are costly burdens of crop production, causing an estimated US$80 - 118 billion per year in damage to crops. They are associated with nearly every important agricultural crop, and are a significant constraint on global food security. Regulations on the use of chemical pesticides have resulted in growing interest in alternative methods of nematode control. Future changes in climate, cropping systems, food habits, as well as social and environmental factors also affect the options for nematode control. Taking a systematic crop by crop approach, this book: Outlines the economic importance of specific plant parasitic nematode problems on the major food and industrial crops. Presents the state-of-the-art management strategies that have been developed to reduce specific nematode impacts, and outlines their limitations. Contains case studies to illustrate impact in the field. Aims to anticipate future changes in nematode disease pressure that might develop as a result of climate change, and new cropping systems.

Book Synopsis Plant Parasitic Nematodes in Sustainable Agriculture of North America by : Sergei A. Subbotin
Download or read book Plant Parasitic Nematodes in Sustainable Agriculture of North America written by Sergei A. Subbotin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant-parasitic nematodes are recognized as one of the greatest threats to crop production throughout the world. Estimated annual crop losses of $8 billion in the United States and $78 billion worldwide are attributed to plant parasitic nematodes. Plant parasitic nematodes not only cause damage individually but form disease-complexes with other microorganisms thereby increasing crop loss. Nematode diseases of crops are difficult to control because of their insidious nature and lack of specific diagnostic symptoms which closely resemble those caused by other plant pathogens and abiotic diseases. Future developments of sustainable management systems for preventing major economical agricultural losses due to nematodes is focused on strategies that limit production costs, enhance crop yields, and protect the environment. This book presents a first compendium and overview for nematode problems and their management across North America. Each chapter provides essential information on the occurrence and distribution of plant parasitic nematodes, their major crop hosts, impact on crop production and sustainable management strategies for each region of the continent including, Canada, Mexico and all states of the USA. For each region, a thematic overview of changes in crop production affected by plant parasitic nematodes and their management strategies over time will provide invaluable information on the important role of plant parasitic nematodes in sustainable agriculture.

Book Synopsis Plant Biotic Interactions by : Ajit Varma
Download or read book Plant Biotic Interactions written by Ajit Varma and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-28 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights recent advances in the field of plant-biotic interactions and explores current serious issues in the crop production industry. It is intended to attract more attention to these important, but often overlooked areas, and to stimulate new ideas for future research. Plants are constantly under attack by pathogens, pests, and parasites, which can significantly impact worldwide food production and human health. While pathogens and pests attack and interconnect with their hosts in a variety of ways, plants have developed sophisticated immune systems to fight infections. In the field of plant-biotic interactions, most of the studies to date have focused on the function and signaling pathways of plant disease resistance proteins and pattern recognition receptors, as well as pathogen effector proteins. In contrast, this book presents new and emerging research areas, and introduces students, researchers, academics, and policy advisors to the latest trends in e.g. microbial technology, environmental microbiology, agricultural science, the health sciences, biological sciences and other related disciplines.
