Book Synopsis Genealogy of the Purchase Family in Britain and Southern Africa by : Nancy R. Purchase
Download or read book Genealogy of the Purchase Family in Britain and Southern Africa written by Nancy R. Purchase and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2008 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating book covering fourteen generations of the extended Purchase family. The Purchase ancestors from England were related to Rev. Charles Haddon Spurgeon from London and were missionaries to Southern Africa. They settled in Northern Rhodesia and raised their families under very primitive conditions. In addition to instilling Christian principles into local Africans, they taught them common farming and building skills. The descriptions of confrontations with wild animals and interactions with native Africans are at times riveting. Successive generations of Purchases spread out all over the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a rich collection of contemporary sources, this study focuses on one group of English immigrants sent to Upper Canada from Sussex and other southern counties with the aid of parishes and landlords. In Part One, Wendy Cameron follows the work of the Petworth Emigration Committee over six years and trace how the immigrants were received in each of these years. In Part Two, Mary McDougall Maude presents a complete list of emigrants on Petworth ships from 1832 to 1837, including details of their background, family reconstructions, and additional information drawn from Canadian sources. Paternalism strong enough to slow the wheels of change is embodied here in Thomas Sockett, the organizer of the Petworth emigrations, and his patron, the Earl of Egremont, and in Lieutenant Governor Sir John Colborne in Upper Canada. The friction created as these men sought to sustain older values in the relationship between rich and poor highlights the shift in British emigration policy. In these years of transition immigrants sent by the Petworth Emigration Committee could accept assistance and the government direction that went with it, or they could rely on their own resources and find work for themselves. Once the transition was complete, the market-driven model took over and immigrants had to make their own best bargain for their labour.

Book Synopsis Dr Ashley's Pleasure Yacht by : RWH Miller
Download or read book Dr Ashley's Pleasure Yacht written by RWH Miller and published by Lutterworth Press. This book was released on 2017-01-26 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Institutional foundation stories have a tendency to change and develop with the passage of time and much repetition. Maritime social historian R.W.H. Miller here explores the life of The Rev. John Ashley and his association with the foundation storyof the Mission to Seafarers, the work of which society is much admired by its present Patron, HRH the Princess Royal. The traditional story is that Ashley's son, out walking by the Bristol Channel with his father, in the early 1830s, asked how the islanders could go to church. Ashley went to see, and from the islands of Flat Holm and Steep Holm seeing large fleets of wind bound ships, asked himself the same question. He used his own money (deriving mainly from the trade of sugar and slaves) to build a schooner, which he sailed in all weathers to provide an answer, in the process creating for himself a place in the ancestry of several Anglican and Catholic societies, of which the Mission to Seafarers, the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen, and the Apostleship of the Sea, continue to provide seafarers with a valued and often heroic service.

This book was released on 2013-11-28 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Locating protest in the wider contexts of work, poverty and landscape change, this new text offers the first critical overview of this growing area of study.
Book Synopsis Societies, Cultures and Kinship 1580-1850 by : Charles Phythian-Adams
Download or read book Societies, Cultures and Kinship 1580-1850 written by Charles Phythian-Adams and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-07-15 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work maps the cultural and physical divisions of medieval England. It concentrates on the level of hierarchy immediately above individual local societies, using detailed case studies of networks of linked communities in the East Midlands, the South and East Anglia. The societies studied are respectively on the periphery of a "cultural province", central to another such province and linked closely to a major urban centre. The text is a synthesis of modern continental historical scholarship, social anthropological and geographical techniques, and English medieval history. Included in the investigations are findings about the role of women in defining the sense of local community during the medieval period.
