Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Oata Analysis and Synthesis (CINOAS) * at Purdue. University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 33 (thesis year 1988) a total of 13,273 theses titles from 23 Canadian and 1 85 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 33 reports theses submitted in 1988, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: This book provides a concise but lucid explanation of the fundamentals of spread-spectrum systems with an emphasis on theoretical principles. Throughout the book, learning is facilitated by many new or streamlined derivations of the classical theory. Problems at the end of each chapter are intended to assist readers in consolidating their knowledge and to provide practice in analytical techniques. The choice of specific topics is tempered by the author’s judgment of their practical significance and interest to both researchers and system designers. The evolution of spread spectrum communication systems and the prominence of new mathematical methods in their design provided the motivation to undertake this new edition of the book. This edition is intended to enable readers to understand the current state-of-the-art in this field. More than 20 percent of the material in this edition is new, including a chapter on systems with iterative channel estimation, and the remainder of the material has been thoroughly revised.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook, now in its 5th edition, provides updated state-of-the-art coverage of spread-spectrum communication systems with new applications throughout the book. In this edition, the author extends sections with more comprehensive details about many topics. Some of the more complex sections have been rewritten to make them easier to understand. New subsections, sections, figures, and problems have been added throughout the book. New or expanded topics include frequency-hopping systems with multisymbol CPFSK detection, derivations of spread-spectrum systems with differential data modulations, chaotic systems, channel-state information, and MIMO. As with previous edition, the author presents mathematical analyses of spread-spectrum systems that provide insights into their operations and limitations and are of theoretical and practical interest to both researchers and system designers. He includes updated problems at the end of each chapter, which are intended to assist readers in consolidating their knowledge and to give practice in analytical techniques. Eight appendices provide the mathematical tools that are useful in understanding the main text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A frequent requirement of spread spectrum communications is that the transmitted signal not be easily detected by an uncooperative receiver. If, however, single sideband amplitude modulation by a digital signal is used to achieve spectrum spreading, it is shown that peaks occur in the transmitted waveform. These peaks may be detected with a threshold receiver. The peak level dependence on bandwidth of the transmitted signal is presented. The effect of bandwidth and gaussian noise on probability of detection are considered in a statistical analysis using numerical methods. The analysis demonstrates the susceptibility of the waveform peaks to detection for a variety of bandwidths and noise levels. Results are presented in both graphical and tabular form. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced concepts for wireless technologies present a vision of technology that is embedded in our surroundings and practically invisible. From established radio techniques like GSM, 802.11 or Bluetooth to more emerging technologies, such as Ultra Wide Band and smart dust motes, a common denominator for future progress is the underlying integrated circuit technology. Wireless Technologies responds to the explosive growth of standard cellular radios and radically different wireless applications by presenting new architectural and circuit solutions engineers can use to solve modern design problems. This reference addresses state-of-the art CMOS design in the context of emerging wireless applications, including 3G/4G cellular telephony, wireless sensor networks, and wireless medical application. Written by top international experts specializing in both the IC industry and academia, this carefully edited work uncovers new design opportunities in body area networks, medical implants, satellite communications, automobile radar detection, and wearable electronics. The book is divided into three sections: wireless system perspectives, chip architecture and implementation issues, and devices and technologies used to fabricate wireless integrated circuits. Contributors address key issues in the development of future silicon-based systems, such as scale of integration, ultra-low power dissipation, and the integration of heterogeneous circuit design style and processes onto one substrate. Wireless sensor network systems are now being applied in critical applications in commerce, healthcare, and security. This reference, which contains 25 practical and scientifically rigorous articles, provides the knowledge communications engineers need to design innovative methodologies at the circuit and system level.
