Book excerpt: Excerpt from Susanna Wesley Tnls life of Susanna Wesley, the mother of John Wesley the founder, and of Charles Wesley the poet, of Methodism, differs from previous ones in not being written from a sectarian nor even from an eminently religious point of view. Having been much asso ciated with those who had been in familiar inter course with Charles Wesley's widow and children, and having heard Susanna Wesley continually spoken of as a woman who underwent and overcame more difficulties than most, the ideal of her life early aroused my imagination. I was delighted with the opportunity of writing her memoir, and have done so with the sympathetic admiration natural to one in whose veins runs some of her blood, however much diluted. So much attention and research have been devoted to the elucidating of almost every point relating to the noble Susanna Wesley, that the lack of any contemporary record is hardly felt; Dr. Adam Clarke in his Wesley Family, the Rev. John Kirk in his Mother of the Wesleys, and Mrs. Eliza Clarke in her exhaustive little volume contributed to the Eminent Women Series, having supplied almost all that can now be hoped in illustra tion of Mrs. Wesley's life and character. The well-known writings of Mrs. Fletcher and Mrs. Rogers are also sufficiently full of incident and of autobiographic information.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Her name has been every-where received with respect, and by a large and influential Christian community it has been cherished with strongest affection. Her success in the education of her children has been the theme of universal admiration; and no one has yet ventured to hazard even a conjecture as to how much the cause of religion and the wellbeing of the human race are indebted, under the Divine blessing, to her steady piety and extraordinary talents. The numerous biographies of her sons, all the histories of Methodism, and a number of periodicals, have contained brief, and in some instances very able, sketches of her character. But up to this hour no volume worthy to be called a memorial of her has issued from the press. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Three brothers came to America, two Of' whom settled in the North and one in the South. Though thus nomi nally of English descent, the brilliant black eyes, ready wit, and kindling, enthusiasm of the Pierce family suggest that, like some other fam ilies among us, they were originally a Norman clan that somehow lost its pedigree without losing its true nobility. All Americans are agreed, at least in theory, that it is better to make a record than to air a pedi gree. Our nobility is indigenous. In this new, one-volume edition that brings together two of his most popular works, #1 New York Times bestselling author Eric Metaxas explores the question of what makes a great person great? Seven Men and Seven Women tells the captivating stories of fourteen heroic individuals who changed the course of history and shaped the world in astonishing ways. George Washington led his country to independence yet resisted the temptation to become America's king. William Wilberforce led the fight to end the slave trade, giving up his chance to be England's prime minister. Susanna Wesley, the mother of nineteen children, gave the world its most significant evangelist and its greatest hymn-writer, her sons John and Charles. Jackie Robison endured the threats and abuse of racists with unimaginable dignity and strength. Corrie ten Boom risked her life to hide Dutch Jews from the Nazis in World War II and survived the horrors of a concentration camp--and forgave her tormentors years later. And Rosa Parks's God-given sense of justice and unshakable dignity helped launch the twentieth century’s greatest social movement. These and other lives profiled in Seven Men and Seven Women reveal how reveal the secret to a life of greatness--by responding to call to live for something greater than oneself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Susanna Wesley, long celebrated in Methodist mythology as mother of the movement's founders, now takes place as a practical theologian in her own right. This collection of her letters, spiritual diary, and longer treatises (only one of which was published in her lifetime) shows her to be more than the nurturing mother of Wesleyan legend. It also reveals her to be a well-educated woman in conversation with contemporary theological, philosophical, and literary works. Her quotations and allusions include Locke, Pascal, and Herbert, as well as a number of now forgotten theologians. In some of her work, one can distinguish doctrinal and spiritual leanings, such as Arminianism and Christian perfection, that would later find wide expression in the spread of Methodism. Further, her writings demonstrate her readiness, for conscience's sake, to stand up to the men in her life--father, husband, and sons---and the three incarnations of English Protestantism they represented: respectively, Puritanism, the Established Church, and the new Methodist movement. Tracing these incidents in her letters and diaries, a reader can begin to understand how spirituality, even an otherwise conservative one in rather restrictive times, can serve to empower the voice of women.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Women of Methodism: Its Three Foundresses, Susana Wesley, the Countess of Huntington, and Barbara Heck, With Sketches of Their Female Associates and Successors in the Early History of the Denomination To Mes. Bishop Hamline And Miss Francis E. Willard. Ladies: In submitting to you the volume which the "American Methodist Ladies Centenary Association" has, through you, as their president and secretary, requested me to write, an apologetic remark is due to both the public and myself. A good authority has said that "no man can do anything thoroughly in literature or art unless he rides it as a hobby." Hobbyism in literature is, however, particularly obnoxious to criticism, to popular criticism at least, especially if it inflicts on the public a multiplication of books of substantially the same subject. If I incur this risk I cannot blame myself. In my historic writings on Methodism I have contemplated but two tasks; having concluded the first of these attempts, and issued two volumes of the second, I had hoped to complete the latter before the present date, and then turn to quite other labors. But the command of the Centenary Committee, to prepare its "Centenary Book," could not be disobeyed. This centenary volume had hardly been published before your command also reached me, and here is my response. So important is this centenary occasion of Methodism, so capable and promising of transcendent results, not only to the Church, but to the religious welfare of the country generally, that I have felt compelled by my conscience to respond to your call. The preparation of this small volume has deeply interested me. My previous historical studies of earl Methodism have convinced me that no other modern, perhaps no ancient, section of the Church possessed richer materials for the illustration of female piety and agency in religion than Methodism.
