Book excerpt: The book Surviving the Mountain is based on my life and how I survived through many near-death experiences. From my beginning to being separated from my biological father as a baby to short memories of living in East Los Angeles and moving to El Monte at the age of six. El Monte, a Spanish word translated in English means The Mountain. El Monte is located in the San Gabriel Valley which is fifteen minutes from downtown Los Angeles. The Mountain or El Monte is a flat city in between two rivers, The Rio Hondo and San Gabriel Rivers. It is the end of the famed Santa Fe Trail that served as America's first commercial highway established in 1822. When you enter the city, there are signs that say, "Welcome to Friendly El Monte," but this was not my experience from the city. It has a south and a north part to it. The city was huge in an area of 9.65 square miles. Within the city's borders was where I spent a great portion of my life. I survived many trials and tribulations, and I have seen the fall of many of my brothers and sisters who did not survive this city. Street gangs, drugs, and violence corrupted my world. The casualties have devastated my people and my culture. God Brought me through this to share my story, believing that we as a people no longer have to surviving this life, but to live. We can build a new future filled with peace and prosperity as God's love and presence preserved me throughout my life. I know He can help us; all we have to do is ask Him and He will answer Matthew 7:7-8 "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened."

Book excerpt: An afternoon hike in the Sierra Mountains turns into a struggle for survival when two teenage girls become hopelessly lost in an electrical storm and must rely on their own wits and strength to endure. Almost a year ago, Erin's mother Lannie suddenly left home without any explanation. Now Lannie wants to see her, but Erin feels miserable and unsure about seeing her mother again. After "losing" her bus ticket on the way to visit her mother, Erin hitches a ride with Mae and her older brother, Levi. Along the way, she joins the two siblings for a hike along the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. When a deadly storm suddenly descends upon the mountain and lightning strikes, everyone on the crowded trails scrambles for safety and Erin and Mae become separated from the others. As the days pass, the two stranded girls must rely on their own determination and skills, as well as each other, to survive. Author Sherry Shahan's dramatic story displays perceptive insights into the conflicted hearts and minds of teenagers, as well as a thorough understanding of the natural world and technical details of mountaineering. An afterword includes details of Shahan's own harrowing alpine adventure that inspired the novel.

Tony Howard rose to fame in 1965 as a member of a group of young climbers from northern England who made the first British ascent of Norway's Troll Wall; a climb described by Joe Brown as, 'One of the greatest ever achievements by British rock climbers'. Tony went on to design the modern sit harness, now used worldwide by most climbers. He founded the company Troll Climbing Equipment but never stopped exploring. Quest into the Unknown is his story. Tony has dedicated his life to travelling the world in search of unclimbed rock faces and remote trekking adventures. The scale of his travels is vast: he has visited all of the North African countries, much of the Arab land of the Middle East, the mountainous regions of Scandinavia, Canada and the rocky spine of the Americas, the Himalaya, remote Indian provinces, South East Asia, Madagascar, South Georgia and Antarctica. This book, the last word in adventure travel, takes the reader from Tony's youth spent developing the crags of the English Peak District, via whaling ships in the Southern Ocean, thousand-mile canoe trips in the Canadian Arctic, living amongst the Bedouin in the rocky mountains of Jordan, to the isolated opium tribes of Thailand. Tony Howard's Quest into the Unknown is the jaw-dropping account of a life of adventure that is the very definition of true exploration.
