Book excerpt: In Surviving Hurricane Katrina: One Family's Story, family members tell of pulling people from rooftops, swaying at the top of a fancy high-rise hotel, and racing against wild animals brought out by the waters. Dallinger examines the traumatizing effects of feeling the threat of out-of-control police officers, surviving the mobs of people and lack of bathrooms at the Convention Center, and seeing a dead body tied to a porch. This book captures the viewpoints from one large family's experiences of preparing, fleeing and enduring Katrina, to picking up life's pieces afterwards. While exploring the complexities of her family's survival, Carolyn Dallinger exposes their emotional trauma, the lack of governmental rescue efforts, and the headaches with FEMA and the Road Home program, through the lens of race and social class. Family members express opinions about lessons learned through this monumental event and how family played a critical role in recovery.

Book excerpt: The Water Lies shares the true story of the Mucha family of Biloxi, Mississippi before, during, and after the hour when Hurricane Katrina tore their lives apart. Experience this familys love and dedication as they confronted and overcame a lack of trust and the brutal consequences of poor decisions. Broken dreams, broken hearts, and facing death at different times threatened this family in untold ways, until now. In sixty minutes, Hurricane Katrina changed countless lives forever. This is one familys story that bares the raw emotions experienced by so many of the families of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. While the country and world embraced the tragic story of New Orleans, and justifiably so, the people of the Mississippi Gulf Coast went about trying to rebuild their lives. This region took the strongest part of Hurricane Katrina. Communities were literally erased. Hundreds of thousands of Mississippians lost their homes, churches, schools, employment their very culture. While no two stories in The Water Lies are alike, they all represent the horror of losing everything and the tenacity of starting over. Choices can never be made without consequences and those consequences can be valuable learning opportunities.

Book excerpt: This modern classic from Newbery award winning author Kirby Larson and Mary Nethery is a remarkable true story of the devotion, friendship, and survival of two pets left behind in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. A testament to the spirit that defined post-Katrina rescue missions, this beautiful picture book has been a favorite of young readers for fifteen years. During Hurricane Katrina, evacuating New Orleans residents were forced to leave their pets behind. Bobbi the dog was initially chained to keep her safe, but after her owners failed to return, she had to break free. For months, Bobbi wandered the city's ravaged streets--dragging her chain behind her--followed by her feline companion, Bob Cat. After months of hunger and struggle, the Two Bobbies were finally rescued by a construction worker helping to rebuild the city. When he brought them to a shelter, volunteers made an amazing discovery about the devoted friends--Bob Cat was actually blind! He had survived the aftermath of the storm by following the sound Bobbi's chain made as she dragged it along the ground. At the shelter, the two bob-tailed friends refused to be parted, even for a moment. Could rescue workers find the Bobbies' owners? Or could they find a new home that would take them together?

Book excerpt: Authors tell stories for many reasons. One of the reasons for telling this story is to specifically connect with those who shared the same experience. Another reason for writing this book is to provide another experience of reference for the topic. This is just one story in the amid hundreds of other stories that could also be told. The final reason for telling this story is to leave an example or a blueprint for future generations of my family to know the strength and courage of those who came before them. I want my children to teach their children and their childrens children how to manage life through difficult situations and circumstances. I want this story to be an example for one of my favorite words, endure. Hurricane Katrina was one of the most destructive hurricanes in recent history. Its economic loss was well into the billions during the first week. Hurricane Katrina started as a depression, then tropical storm, and in days, developed into an intimidating category 4 and 5 hurricane. Lives were heavily impacted and changed in New Orleans, Louisiana; Mobile, Alabama; and Gulfport, Mississippi, as the massive hurricane brought heavy winds, rains, and more than twenty feet of storm surge. This book is not intended to dwell or wallow in the past. It is meant to review and remember what happened in order to celebrate the victory of moving through and moving past a tragedy. Ive learned in life that we cant be so quick to forget overwhelming or difficult life changes without learning the lessons from them. The truth is that life happens, and we must be willing to deal with, accept, confront, plan, solve, and move forward when lifes most unexpected twists and turns occur. This book is also not meant to become deeply involved in the political issues of Hurricane Katrina. The politics have already played out and are recorded in history. Water Line is simply the story of my familys journey before, during, and after one of lifes roughest moments while also recognizing the different experiences and levels of loss caused by one giant hurricane named Katrina.

Book excerpt: Words cannot adequately convey the human dimension of the devastation wreaked on New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina. Thomas Neff's photographs can. As a volunteer in the city in the early days after the flood, this Baton Rouge photographer witnessed firsthand the confusion and suffering that was New Orleans--as well as the persistence and strength of those who stuck it out. Neff subsequently spent forty-five days interviewing and photographing the city's holdouts, and his record is a heartbreaking but compelling look at the true impact of the disaster. At a time when New Orleans residents felt isolated and abandoned, Neff provided the ear that many needed. The friendship he extended enabled him to capture remarkable images and to write sensitive commentaries that approach his subjects from a uniquely personal perspective. Here are Antoinette K-Doe assessing the future of her ruined Mother-in-Law Loun≥ Juan Parke, who ferried scores of people to safety in his silver canoe; Ashton O'Dwyer defending his property from looters; Ride Hamilton pausing in his work as a freelance medic. These portraits and dozens more tell the story of the storm through many voices--and collectively they tell a story of their own. Other books have documented the wrath of Katrina, but none has captured the human dimension as powerfully as Holding Out and Hanging On. Through these intimate, intense images, readers will meet people from all walks of life who are exhausted by grief and shock but who are determined to hold on to their culture and their city. Neff's gripping black-and-white images and equally poignant narratives show individuals who are reorganizing their lives, trying to maintain their individuality, and even enriching their souls as they help one another. These are the stories that New Orleans citizens told each other--a view of the disaster not captured by the news cameras--and photographs that show the city as it knows itself. Together, Neff's portraits and stories form a sensitive documentary of survival and stand as a testament to the extraordinary individuals who endured one of the most calamitous disasters of our time.

Book excerpt: This book details the journey of one family's survival after one of the most devastating and destructive natural disasters in this country's history. Erin Akey, her three sons aged 13, 9, and 5, and her mother set out to seek safety as Hurricane Katrina approached their home in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. Erin was a divorced, single mother who had to find a way for her family to survive as they fled the storm, found out that all that was left of their home and possessions was the slab of concrete and nothing else. She had to learn how to navigate the governmental bureaucracies to get help for them to survive, followed by her home insurance company trying any and everything to avoid honoring their commitment to their policyholders, and securing a safe place for them to live during these trying times. The reader is caught up in her trials and tribulations as they journey with her in her efforts to resolve the seemingly insurmountable obstacles she faced. However, this is not just a story of desperation but also of conquest. Despite the misery and heartache, Erin's story has a wonderful and exciting conclusion and the anticipation of a wonderful future filled with happiness and service to those who find themselves in circumstances similar to those she and her family faced. It is a story of courage in the face of adversity, faith, and the willingness to accept the good things God gives us, thank Him, and go forward, in His name, to help others.

"Life After Katrina" chronicles in real time the communication struggles of one family between Minnesota and hurricane-ravaged Mississippi. The only way they can contact one another is through the Guestbook feature on author Barbie Root's personal Web page. In the immediate aftermath of the storm, Barbie's family members' encouraging messages and constant communication are her only connections to a world beyond suffering and despair. After the initial shock and storm-induced panic wear off, the message board continues to connect Barbie and her family through many more ups and downs, happiness, and challenges. Readers across the nation, both affected and unaffected by natural disasters, will identify with Barbie's story through the common threads of love, laughter, and family. The Root family proves that even in the midst of anguish and uncertainty, sickness and death, there is still optimism, hope, and determination in "Life After Katrina."

The turtle, first introduced to us as George, had a deep connection to the Coleman family, in a way that only pets can connect and tie people. Though hit by the tragedy and strife following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, Georgette's story, and that of her family is truly heartwarming. This story speaks to the spirit and resilience of New Orleans, its people, and even its turtles.
