Book excerpt: Domestic violence is the silent crime. Thousands of women suffer in silence as they are emotionally, physically, spiritually and sexually abused. Silence can be deadly! Domestic violence was foreign to me. Although I was loved and protected by my parents, others rejected me. Fear of being rejected caused me to compromise who I was. Blindly, I married the man who not only abused me but abused his first wife. I knew about it, but knew he wouldn't do that to me. It happened! Years later I found myself being kicked out of my home, moving to a new state to start a new life! This journey has taken me from spiritual death to abundant life in Christ and out of survival mode to being filled with power to break the chains that bound me. Share my story of false love, real love, isolation and abuse. "Danita Harris is an anointed writer who delivers an emotional, powerful and personal story on overcoming domestic violence. The message in her book will whisper to your heart and minister to abused and broken women souls." - Tonya Blount, award-wining author, domestic violence advocate and talk show host

Book excerpt: Readers of science fiction dystopia comedy books will (hopefully) enjoy the dry sarcastic humour of this series. Despite the dystopian setting these books are up-beat. Terry Pratchett meets Dr Who ... sort of. As recently appointed delivery man for Big Merv, one of Ning Dang Po's most powerful crime bosses, The Pan of Hamgee is ordered to deliver a gift to Big Merv's current girlfriend. With a pair of bespoke-made, sapphire and diamond earrings on board, and a trip across the city in the offing, what could possibly go wrong? Everything. This book is written and spelled in Britsh English, suggested cinema rating PG. Contains moderate violence (a comedy punch up) and a dash of light swearing. Suitable for any reader of any age from 10 up - younger readers who have read all the Harry Potter books without any worries will be fine with the Hamgeean Misfit stories. Close Enough is the third book in the Hamgeen Misfit, dystopian humorous science fiction series. It is set in a contemporary dystopia, in a parallel reality but there is some futuristic technology. There is an overall story arc, but these funny comedy stories are written to be stand alone and can be read in any order. **** INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR Q – What made you write this series? A – If you want the honest answer I wrote it for me. As a reader, I love British satire and humor (or humour). I love wit; funny epic fantasy series like the Discworld novels and comedic sci fi like Douglas Adams. I like sff and speculative fiction, I like adventure and action and a gripping tale that zips along quickly, I like genre mash ups and I love an angsty dystopian world but the best science fiction and fantasy stories, for me, are funny. I am to write comedy in the tradition of all the great humorous British authors. I like to aim high. I wanted protagonists people could love and empathise with, mavericks, misfit characters, real people ... except they're not all people obviously, some of them are other alien (ish) species. This book is about misfit heroes and heroines winning the day, it’s about good versus evil even when the good guys are on different sides. It's dystopian science fiction fantasy action - it's dystopia but it's comedy, it's sci-fi but it's planet-based. You'll find all sorts of quirky characters and interesting alien species: from 6ft Swamp Things with antennae to cute furry creatures like the Blurpons, with their fluffy ears, big button eyes and penchant for extreme violence. Oh, and there's this debrief scene ... *** SIMILAR AUTHORS: Robert Rankin, C Gockel, Patty Jansen, JJ Greene, FJ Savage, Heide Goodey, EM Foner, Robert Asprin, the Stainless Steel Rat and Space Team series. KEYWORDS: Dystopian, dystopia, parallel universe, young adult literature, best science fiction, light novel, sci fi, coming of age, dry sarcastic humour, gallows humor, adventure stories, humorous books, epic reading, British humour, ya fantasy

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1970s was a golden age for representations of African American life on TV sitcoms: Sanford & Son, Good Times, The Jeffersons. Surprisingly, nearly all the decade’s notable Black sitcoms were made by a single company, Tandem Productions. Founded by two white men, the successful team behind All in the Family, writer Norman Lear and director Bud Yorkin, Tandem gave unprecedented opportunities to Black actors, writers, and producers to break into the television industry. However, these Black auteurs also struggled to get the economic privileges and creative autonomy regularly granted to their white counterparts. Scratchin’ and Survivin’ discovers surprising parallels between the behind-the-scenes drama at Tandem and the plotlines that aired on their sitcoms, as both real and fictional African Americans devised various strategies for getting their fair share out of systems prone to exploiting their labor. The media scholar Adrien Sebro describes these tactics as a form of “hustle economics,” and he pays special attention to the ways that Black women—including actresses like LaWanda Page, Isabel Sanford, and Esther Rolle—had to hustle for recognition. Exploring Tandem’s complex legacy, including its hit racially mixed sitcom Diff’rent Strokes, he showcases the Black talent whose creative agency and labor resilience helped to transform the television industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Huzzah! I made it to my twenty-third birthday! Given how much dragon magic I have rolling through me now, doing its best to cook me from the inside out, this feat is no small thing. I’ve earned a hearty celebration and then some. I’m gonna party down at Sharmayne’s and let her ply me with as many of her cocktails as she wants. Her magic touch is exactly what I need after how nutty life in Traitor’s Den has been lately. I deserve every hypnotic, milky, swirling Moon Mixer she sends my way. Hell, I might get fancy and skip right on to a Roll in the Hay, maybe even a Sirens on the Rocks, and if I’m tipsy enough, end the night with a Dragon Slayer like a proper wild child. Who needs to be clear headed anyway? For one night, I can be one clown short of a circus. All the responsibility of being both sheriff and mayor of our fine, one-way town will still be waiting for me tomorrow. It always is. A night at Sharmayne’s oughta leave me loose and ready to finally take advantage of all the dragon shifter Rhett and the vampire Zeke keep trying to offer me—every damn day, all day long...and into the night. Their looks are heated enough that if all the power inside me weren’t already threatening to give me a good cookin’, their constant seduction would. Those men could sell heat to a roasting fire. But trust me, what they’re sellin’, I’m lookin’ to buy. They say I’m their mate? Their queen? Well, bring it on. I’m wearing my favorite dancin’ boots. Near on every free woman in the Den is looking to move in on them. Good thing they’ve only got eyes for me. And since I’m also the one stuck dealing with all the trouble they cause—and they get into trouble faster than a balloon at an overcrowded porcupine party—I may as well reap the benefits too. It’s past time to examine the goods... Of course, just when I’m starting to get hot and heavy with my two guys, a knock on the door upends my world—yet again. Why in tickled tarnation does nothing in our town ever go down the way it’s supposed to? ‘Cause plans are for losers, apparently. Even when they’re no-plan plans, my specialty. Well, at least, I ain’t complainin’ none. Not one tiny, little bit. Not with who’s on the other side of my door. Not till the sky starts falling, anyhow... * A sexy fantasy western with growly shifters, sketchy vamps, peculiar mages and creatures, and one badass cowgirl sheriff. Within this small town, magic and gossip flow as freely as whiskey, and work and pleasure are nearly the same thing. Weird things happen on the regular in Traitor's Den. Come and join the quirky family, where everyone's packing. Oh, and don't mind the tiger. * Loretta Maybelle Ray is hot stuff. When several fine cowboys vie for her affections, this series becomes a reverse harem. * Though this series does not contain curse words, but rather a comical variation of them, it contains slow-burn romance that eventually leads to sex on the page with more than one man. * Each book in the Six Shooter and a Shifter series is a full-length novel that ends on a cliffhanger. However, a happily-ever-after is guaranteed for the series finale.

This is a tale of the consequences of such a transaction. A Priest is forced to call forth a demon from the depths of Hell to be captured and interrogated by the Vatican. But upon her summoning, the demoness appears far different than what is expected. This story follows the events from three different points of view. Father Edward Thomas is an exorcist and Priest who fights to find not just his own salvation, but is presented with the question of whether or not a demon can be redeemed. What forces does God have in place to fight demons on earth? Where are they, and why have they seemingly abandoned us? Sara Baker is trapped by a deal she made long ago: A once promising medical student who finds that an event she thought was a dream in her childhood was indeed a reality. Now she must do her best to survive the fires of Hell and keep what little humanity she can hold on to… But will those in Hell allow such a thing? Jason Miller never knew his mother. But when a stunning woman appears at his doorstep claiming to be his long lost mother, Sara Baker, his world begins to unravel around him. What are the consequences of selling one’s soul, even for the most innocuous of trades? Find out in three tales of woe in the first entry of The Guardian Temple Series.

Book excerpt: The prize-winning debut of an incendiary new voice in contemporary American fiction, 47th Street Black is the story of JC and Mookie, whose rise in the gangster-driven ghettos of Chicago is as swift as it is brutal. In the early sixties, 47th street is the heart of black Chicago, where recent migrants from the South come to move up in the world. JC and Mookie are high school dropouts, playing stickball in the street when they stumble upon the dead body of the area's black liaison to the mafia. Where others would run, Mookie sees opportunity, and in no time he and JC are working for Salvie, the local boss. Within a year, they are the most infamous figures on 47th Street, best friends and partners with flashy cars, clothes, and women. As they alternate telling their stories, the balance of power shifts: smooth, charismatic Mookie becomes the de facto leader and small, violent JC the enforcer—roles that send JC to jail for a murder they commit together. In the 15 years he's away, JC gains an education and a resentment he can't control, while Mookie gains power over the entire South Side. By the time JC is paroled, both the neighborhood and the two men's lives are on an inexorable path to an explosive confrontation with simmering injustice.

Book excerpt: When Joe Trueman rides into Dry Bluff with the injured body of Doc Drummond thrown across his horse's back, he little realizes the trouble he is getting into. Drummond is just one more victim of Kettle and his gang of gunslicks, who threaten not only the town but the wagon-train route to Denver and beyond. Dealing with Kettle is only the start. Behind Kettle looms the more menacing figure of Cush Vogler, and it's a long ride to Vogler's ranch, the Buckle M. Menaced every step of the way, Trueman arrives in the nearby settlement of Buzzard Roost. Then things really get hot. As violence erupts and a range war breaks out between the Buckle M and the much smaller Two Bar Cross, the citizens must decide: do they have the nerve to dare stand by Trueman when the bullets fly?
