A tour de force of a book that begs to be seen as well as to be read.”—The Washington Post Book World World renowned scientist Carl Sagan and acclaimed author Ann Druyan have written a Roots for the human species, a lucid and riveting account of how humans got to be the way we are. Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors is a thrilling saga that starts with the origin of the Earth. It shows with humor and drama that many of our key traits—self-awareness, technology, family ties, submission to authority, hatred for those a little different from ourselves, reason, and ethics—are rooted in the deep past, and illuminated by our kinship with other animals. Sagan and Druyan conduct a breathtaking journey through space and time, zeroing in on critical turning points in evolutionary history, and tracing the origins of sex, altruism, violence, rape, and dominance. Their book culminates in a stunningly original examination of the connection between primate and human traits. Astonishing in its scope, brilliant in its insights, and an absolutely compelling read, Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors is a triumph of popular science.

Book excerpt: "The Laney Saga" is an historical fiction about the ancestry and lives of Titus and Hannah Laney. The book is actually three books, depicting the ancestry of Titus, the ancestry of Hannah and finally, their life together. The book begins in the year 69 AD with the Roman army. Over the course of the next 300 pages we see how Laney ancestors dealt with hunger, marauders, the elements, the Black Death, religion, and persecution. You will be enthralled with Hannah's ancestors: characters such as Dei, Carlin, Teige, Liam, Sophie and Carrie. You will be equally impressed with the ancestors of Titus: Derry, Boruck, Harold, Joseph and Olaf. Some of the characters actually existed such as Hugh Slaini, Teigena Lann, Dubslane, Finn, O'Dubhshlaine and Johann Lennich. This book is a walk through history as we see what molded our ancestors and made them the men and women that still influences their descendants to this day. There is romance, anger, religious persecution, witchcraft, plague, war and even a fight in the coliseum at Rome. The Roman Empire, Druids, Feudalism, the Thirty Years' War, sailing the Atlantic, wagon trains, Indians and the Revolutionary War are all mentioned. The book begins with Titus and Hannah's ancestors caught up in 69 AD in a war with Rome. It concludes with one of their ancestors serving in the military in Iraq. And in between, there are many wonderful adventures and surprises. Read and enjoy.

This is by far the best book I’ve read in years . . . possibly ever!” —Reader review A Civil War–era secret brings modern-day consequences in a novel that asks: How long can the shadows of the past hang over one family? Philip Richards puts little value on his life. He avoids close relationships and blames himself for the sexual abuse his sister suffered at the hands of their grandfather. To drown his sorrows and evade his guilt, Philip drinks too much and engages in dangerous activities. When his father dies, two more life-changing events take place. Philip meets Edith, a free-spirited poet, with whom he feels an instant connection. He also comes across a manuscript, a stolen narrative that chronicles the Civil War relationship between his ancestor, Russell, and Fever, the slave who became his wife. As new details about Philip’s family and his own identity come to light, his perception of who he is and where he comes from is turned on its head. But even as Philip comes to terms with the issues that have loomed over his family for decades, fresh allegations bring the crimes of the past flooding into the present . . . Echoes of Our Ancestors is a dark and moving multi-generational saga that explores themes of trauma, race, and abuse—and the question of whether, and how, we can free ourselves from the past.

During the week I spent in a lovely seminar house secluded in among the trees bordering the heather of the Lunebergerheide, I found myself tasked with telling the story of the Runes as one of creation, not destruction. We used shamanic drumming and rattling to drive the visionary state and a specific body posture to guide our experience. My time was spent deep in a philosophical discussion with the energetic field of the Runes. It was impressed on me that the two fundamental distortions in the historical practice of Runes were the suppression of sexual energy in Christianity and the Germanic tribe's practice of ritual killing to gain personal power. I was shown how this combination inherently leads to atrocities. My first step was to seek out any creation stories I could find that were related to the runes. Somewhat to my surprise, I did not find any direct or obvious correlations between the runes names and the stories. In fact, the use of the runes as an alphabet turned out to be driven by the Christian Church. Then I looked into the current practice of Rune Stances and found their origins were both recent and suspect. Along the way, I had to admit that if the creation story of the runes was readily accessible, they would not have had to grab hold of an ignorant mixed-blood New Mexican to tell their tale. What I had to offer was my own idiosyncratic view of the situation. Since I had experience with ecstatic trance postures, I wondered if rune shapes corresponded with ancient ecstatic body postures. Once I turned towards the much older and more mysterious visionary roots of the Runes, my path to a runic story of creation began to open. I ended up with a mosaic of a sacred World Tree made of ancient bits and pieces. I hope they can open creative experiential doors for those drawn to work in the runic realms.
