Book excerpt: Inbreeding's harmful consequences have been well documented under artificial conditions; however, studies under natural conditions are limited. I examined the effects of inbreeding on the fitness of prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster) in captivity and the field. In captivity, sibling and non-sibling pairs did not differ with regard to time to the first litter, litter size, or offspring weight. Another laboratory experiment examined these same variables in the following un-related pairs: non-inbred female/ male, inbred female/ male, non-inbred female/ inbred male, and inbred female/ non-inbred male. The only significant result was that the weaning weight of offspring born to non-inbred pairs was greater than offspring born to non-inbred female/ inbred male pairs. There also was no significant difference in the survival and reproduction of unrelated inbred and non-inbred voles released into semi-natural enclosures. This study did not find any evidence that inbred adults have lower fitness than non-inbred adults.

The last major monograph on the subject (Ewer, 1968) was published sixteen years ago, and there is a need for this information to be examined in terms of modern sociobiological theory. My approach throughout is evolutionary and is therefore directed strongly towards research which throws light on the ways in which mammals behave in their natural environments. I have tried to cover as wide a range of mammalian species as possible, although, in some cases, the only data available were obtained from captive individuals. The coverage of this book is not a reflection of the volume of literature published on different species, as I have tried to avoid undue emphasis on the social behaviour of primates and laboratory rodents. I have made scrupulous efforts throughout to avoid an anthropomorphic approach to mammalian behaviour. Terms such as 'strategy', 'evaluation' or 'choice' do not therefore imply conscious planning, but are used neutrally in the way in which they would be applied to a chess-playing computer. In the case of mammals, the programmer was natural selection. While I am fully aware that human beings are mammals, any detailed consideration of human social behaviour lies outside the scope of this book. However, the book may provide a complementary text to those interested in that subject.

Such an interdisciplinary exchange of information took place on the occasion of the Symposium on Chemical Signals in Vertebrates and Aquatic Animals in Syracuse, New York, from May 31 to June 2, 1979. More than one hundred investigators from seven countries participated, and the papers presented comprise this volume. Since the first Symposium on Vertebrate Chemical Signals at Saratoga Springs in 1976, considerable progress has been made with field studies, the physiology of the vomeronasal organ, and its role in reproductive behavior. The behavioral functions and chemi cal nature of priming pheromones are better understood. Efforts to isolate and identify mammalian pheromones are gaining ground, and the bioassays are becoming more sophisticated. In addition to formal presentations, one evening of the Symposi um was devoted to round-table discussions of particular topics. The selected themes indicate the "growing points" of chemical communi cation research: priming pheromones, vomeronasal organ, bioassay, and practical applications.
