Standard cancer management therapies are known to cause oral complications, such as mucositis (OM), that can range from mild to very severe. Severe OM can require interruption of treatment, and possibly hospitalization for IV rehydration, pain control, and nourishment. Utilizing good oral care practices during treatment has been shown effective to help limit severity and/or reduce duration of OM. Patient education on this concept, and on ideal products and self-care techniques are integral to patient implementation of supportive oral health practices. Unfortunately, patients may not receive comprehensive oral health education that promotes good oral health. In addition, many factors effect memory, and therefore affect recall and utilization of information. This means that patients may not be suitably equipped to promote oral health during therapy. This study explored patient recollection of receiving patient education on oral care topics. This study also assessed utilization of the information to assert positive modifications to oral hygiene practices. Convenience sample (N=75) data was collected from a cancer center. Z-Scores (zs) at 95% confidence level were determined for respondents that made positive modifications to oral care practices, and did or did not recall receiving patient education on the corresponding oral hygiene topic. When performing comparative data analysis to evaluate positive modifications to oral care practices, no statistical significance was found for 6 of 7 survey topics. However, statistical significance did result for the mouthrinse topic (zs=2.23). Additional findings indicate that many patients did not follow oral hygiene practices that align with evidence based and dental professional guidelines"--Document.

Book excerpt: "Purpose: Interprofessional education (IPE) provides academic experiences for students to learn about different professions, their roles, and improving attitudes toward communications between professions with the intent of improving patient overall healthcare. This study evaluated the impact of IPE and knowledge the students gained on oral healthcare for cancer patients. Methods: This quasi-experimental study used a convenient sample of nursing and dental hygiene students. Participants were given a pre and post survey to collect quantitative data that included a Readiness for lnterprofessional Survey (RIPLS) and a PI-designed multiple-choice survey to determine students' attitudes and learning. A module of IPE and oral cancer care was provided for the students. A case study was presented and students were allowed time to work in preselected mixed groups to design patient care addressing the multiple oral complication a cancer patient can experience. Anecdotal data was collected via student comments. Results: Study results demonstrated an improvement in participant's knowledge of oral care for cancer patients' oral complications, attitudes towards interprofessional communications, and understanding of professional roles. Conclusion: The implementation of an IPE experience demonstrated a correlation between an IPE experience and participant's attitudes and learning. Patients undergoing cancer treatment will experience some form of oral complications. Preparing students to meet the needs of the cancer patient's oral health will ultimately decrease oral complications and patient mortality"--Leaf xiii.

The idea for the book originated from a course entitled “Immunology for Epidemiologists“ at the Yale School of Public Health. While many fine textbooks are available that address the immunological responses of individuals to pathogens, these provided very little information regarding how immunological variation among populations affects the epidemiology of disease. And yet, it has long been recognized that there is great immunologic diversity among people, which can have a profound effect on the epidemiology of disease. Careful review of the immunologic and epidemiologic literature revealed that there have been relatively few publications concerning immunoepidemiology and that no textbook is available on the subject. This textbook therefore aims to fill this void by providing a much-needed tool to comprehensively and efficiently teach immunoepidemiology. The book includes a section on the basic principles of immunology, and then applies them to particular examples of disease in human populations. Book excerpt: Treatment of head and neck cancer with radiation therapy is associated with adverse side effects to the oral cavity and surrounding areas. These complications include mucositis, mucosal fibrosis and atrophy, salivary gland dysfunction, increased risk of dental caries, increased susceptibility to infections, tissue necrosis, taste dysfunction, and muscular and/or cutaneous fibrosis. The often permanent nature of the radiation-induced damage necessitates the maintenance of a strict oral care program, involving frequent flossing and brushing in addition to daily fluoride applications, for the rest of the patient's life. An additional concern among patients with head and neck cancer is the use of tobacco and alcohol. Both are known risk factors in the development of head and neck cancers and failure to abstain from either after diagnosis increases the risk for relapse and development of secondary cancers. The present study was a longitudinal investigation of several factors that may influence patients' consistency in following their prescribed oral care program and abstaining from alcohol and tobacco use, including, but not limited to, patient satisfaction with the doctor-patient communication, patient coping, and patient illness perceptions. The study examined an integrative model seeking to explain patient adherence to the oral care regimen as well as tobacco and alcohol use. While results were inconclusive with respect to the model, there were several interesting findings, which were consistent with previous literature examining doctor-patient communication and illness perceptions among other cancer populations. Results from this study suggested that both satisfaction with doctor-patient communication and coping play an important role in forming patients' illness perceptions. Furthermore beliefs about the severity of oral complications emerged as a predictor of oral care at follow-up.
