Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: W.A. de Jong President of TNO Until some decades ago man supposed that the resilience of the environment was unlimited. He thought he could draw heavily on nature with impunity and that he could infinitely dump his waste into the environment. We have come to know better now: virtually everyone is well aware that one cannot just go on burdening the environment of man, animal and plant to such an extent. TNO, the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research, is among those research institutions that are working on economically feasible solutions for pollution problems resulting from human activities. Soil contamination and remediation feature as important topics in TNO's environmental research programme. In view of the international scope of the problem, TNO organized an international conference on this subject in Utrecht, the Netherlands, in November 1985, which met with a worldwide response from the scientific community as well as from governments and industry. The international interest taken in soil contamination is underlined by the fact that the Second International Conference on Contaminated Soil takes place in a country where remedial action is being given high political priority.

Book Synopsis Lead in Food by : Great Britain. Working Party on Inorganic Contaminants in Food
Download or read book Lead in Food written by Great Britain. Working Party on Inorganic Contaminants in Food and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last MAFF report on lead in food was published in 1982. This new report describes surveys and research which have been carried out since then. It gives estimates of lead intakes in the UK and presents data on levels in individual foods. Lead can reach food from cooking water, from incorrect storage in cans and from the soil and atmosphere. The report looks at these different routes and at how preparation and cooking can affect lead levels. It also reviews the evidence linking alcohol consumption and lead intake.
Book Synopsis Lead in the Marine Environment by : Marko Branica
Download or read book Lead in the Marine Environment written by Marko Branica and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2015-12-04 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lead in the Marine Environment covers the proceedings of the International Experts Discussion on Lead Occurrence, Fate, and Pollution in the Marine Environment, held in Rovinj, Yugoslavia on October 18-22, 1977. The book focuses on the release of lead to the environment, including the techniques, processes, and technologies involved in the analysis of lead in marine ecosystems. The selection first highlights the impact of human on coastal marine ecosystems; analysis of natural and industrial lead in marine ecosystems; and the occurrence of lead in Northeast Pacific and the effects of anthropogenic inputs. The book also looks at the voltammetric determination of the stability constants of the predominant labile lead complexes in sea water, as well as investigations on the nature of the effective carbonato ligand and experimental verification of a chemical model for trace metal speciation in sea water. The publication reviews studies of lead in water and biological materials using X-ray emission spectroscopy; theoretical studies of the chemical speciation of lead in sea water; and input of lead into the Mediterranean through rivers. The text also explains the chelation of lead by organic ligands in sea water and potentialities and limitations of atomic absorption spectroscopy in environmental and biological materials with reference to lead determinations. Concerns include aspects of chelation of heavy metal traces in sea water and typical lead values and analytical data for biological and environmental materials. The selection is a vital source of data for readers interested in studying the effects of lead on the environment.

Book excerpt: The International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI), a nonprofit, public foundation, was established in 1978 to advance the sciences of nutrition, toxicology, and food safety. ILSI promotes the resolution of health and safety issues in these areas by sponsoring research, conferences, publications, and educational programs. Through ILSI's programs, scientists from government, academia, and industry unite their efforts to resolve issues of critical importance to the public. As part of its commitment to understanding and resolving health and safety issues, ILSI is pleased to sponsor this series of monographs that consolidates new scientific knowledge, defines research needs, and provides a background for the effective application of scientific advances in toxicology and food safety. Alex Malaspina President International Life Sciences Institute Preface We live in a changing world. The everyday, ongoing changes in people's habits and the availability of foods in the market lead to continuous changes in food con sumption patterns, changes we need to understand since they play an important role in nutrition as well as toxicology. In nutrition, food intake data provide us with the information needed to exam ine whether, on the one hand, these modifications are still within the limits of nutritional safety and, on the other, whether they offer the possibility of monitor ing the evolution of dietary habits. In toxicology, food intake data are used to calculate the potential intake of sub stances used as additives or substances that enter food as contaminants, such as pesticide residues, packaging materials, and radionuclides.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following indications that soluble coffee being sold in the UK contained non-coffee bean material, the Working Party on Food Authenticity has investigated soluble (instant) coffee sold through retail, catering and vending outlets in the UK. Possible adulterants include coffee plant husks, skins, stems or stalks, added before roasting or other non-coffee bean matter such as maltodextrins which may be added before or after the drying process. This report details the background to the survey, the survey design, its results (15% were considered adulterated) and the follow-up action which has been implemented.
