Book excerpt: During the period of 5 April 2001 - 16 May 2001, topographic surveys of Del Monte beach in Monterey, California, were performed on a regular basis to record changes in beach cusp development for comparison to wave data being collected by the Oceanography Department of the Naval Postgraduate School. The surveys were conducted with a Real Time Kinematic Global Positioning System (RTK-GPS) secured to an all-terrain vehicle (ATV). The surveys were performed by driving the ATV on longshore transects of the beach to measure the vertical variation. From these surveys, the size and shape of the cusps were determined for each survey, and cusp variations between surveys were compared to the changes in wave conditions. Cusp spacing was determined through spectral analysis of the survey data, which produced peaks at the primary longshore wave numbers of the surf zone and swash cusps. The field data were then compared to current theory regarding beach cusp formation and maintenance in an attempt to determine the causative, maintenance, and destructive mechanisms.

Book excerpt: Conclusions: The compositional changes that occur along the beaches of Monterey are not the result of selective sorting processes but rather reflect changes in the source sediment. Such changes may result from several different supply-littoral transport conditions. The changes which may occur at river mouths may reflect a flooding out of littorally transported sediment; changes not related to rivers may reflect local supply from cliff erosion. In the absence of any significant supply of sediment from rivers and cliff erosion these changes must reflect a lack of littoral transport and prior conditions which produced the observed mineralogical pattern. Only in areas devoid of long-term net littoral transport can such relict sedimentary dispersal patterns be preserved.

This budget is based heavily upon sediment information obtained from field and laboratory studies. These studies included a detailed quasi-synoptic areal sampling to determine distribution of textural patterns, and a time-series study of beach and surf-zone sand samples obtained from local sand-mining companies. Results from these studies were combined with data on river discharge, the wind and wave regimes, and shoreline changes during the past century to develop quantitative estimates of sediment gains and losses to the cell. It was determined that the major sources of sediment are the discharge from the Salinas River which empties into the northeast corner of the cell, and erosion of Quaternary seacliffs which form the inner bay shore. Major sinks are the Monterey Submarine Canyon, active coastal dune fields, the mining companies, and the offshore area. The recent history of the sediment regime in the southern bay is reviewed, and a forecast of future nearshore changes is made. Recommendations for further work needed to refine the budget computations are presented. (Author).
