Book excerpt: "This report helps its readers to answer questions such as: how likely are students to transfer? Which students are most likely to do so? Measure and benchmark transfer rates from student backgrounds defined by income, race, ethnicity, college major, regional origin, job status, ACT/SAT scores, college grades, and other variables. Quantify exactly how many have already transferred from other colleges. How many plan to transfer and how strong is this sentiment? The report enables its end users to pin down and benchmark transfer sentiments and rates broken out by innumerable useful variables. In addition the report presents a range of data on student satisfaction with their current college, the likelihood that survey respondents will recommend their college to a friend, and how they now view the value of their eventual degree vs. how they viewed it when they started at their present college." -- Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: This study gives highly specific data on the graduate school plans of American college students with unique and targeted demographic data sets for plans to go to law school, medical/dental/veterinary school, MBA programs, international affairs/public affairs masters degree programs, PHD programs in the humanities, PHD programs in the hard sciences, masters programs in nursing/occupational and physical therapy and much more. The report helps its end users to answer questions such as: how does demand for MBA programs differ from that of law school? What are the demographics of interest in medical school vs. nursing or occupational therapy programs? How much demographic overlap is there? Beyond students obviously interested in graduate school in a given area, who are those students with more than a passing interest but who have not quite made up their minds? What is the demographic profile of these students? The report will help graduate schools, academic advisors, enrollment and retention executives and others to help pinpoint demand for particular programs, specifying not only those who plan to apply but the level of interest of everyone else. By so many targeted variables the study enables its readers to measure interest in specific academic programs from specific segments of the current US college population, with variables such as age, academic major, gender, sexual orientation, grades, SAT/ACT scores, regional origins, religion, level of student debt, income level of family of origin, population concentration of region of origin and many other personal variables. The study also breaks out data by key institutional variables so readers can estimate program and subject demand by type of college, size of college, public/private status and even tuition level. Data in the 197- page report is based on a representative sample of 1,765 full time US college students drawn from a representative sub sample of more than 90 colleges and universities.

Book excerpt: This study presents detailed data from a survey of 1,076 students at four year colleges in the USA about how they evaluate their college or university. The 185-page study imparts detailed information about how students feel about the quality of their instructors, financial aid availability, public safety on campus, student internships and opportunities for student employment, student housing and many other facets of college life. In addition, the study presents student assessment's of their overall experience, of the likelihood that they will graduate from their current college, and the likelihood that they would recommend their college to a friend. Just a few of the report's many findings are that: 25.65% of respondents were "very satisfied" with their college or universityOlder students were particularly dissatisfied with the state of public safety on campus.Students studying journalism and communications were the least satisfied with their internships.64.59% of students sampled felt that that they were sure that they would graduate from the college that they currently attended.67% of female students but only 59.5% of male students were satisfied or very satisfied with financial aid packages available on campus.African American students were the most satisfied with campus housing; Asian Americans, the least satisfied. Students who grew up abroad were the most dissatisfied with opportunities for paid work on or near campus.Data from a nationally representative sample of 1,076 in the report is broken out by more than 20 personal and institutional variables, so, for example, readers can get specific data on the percentage of first year students who would recommend their college to a friend vs the same sentiment for sophomores, juniors or seniors, or for students in level 1 research universities vs. doctoral institutions, or for male vs. female or vs. transgender students, or for business/economics majors vs fine arts majors, etc., etc. Breakouts include age, year of school standing, major or intended major, religion, gender, sexual orientation, income level, SAT/ACT scores, college grades, regional origins, race/ethnicity, level of school tuition, size of school of institution attended and many other variables.

Book excerpt: The post-graduation outcomes of college students are being more widely used as key metrics to demonstrate institutional effectiveness to both external agencies and internal stakeholders. Institutional research offices play an integral role in these data collection efforts. However, underlying challenges exist regarding obtaining an adequate amount of survey responses and salary or earnings information. This volume focuses on the first-destination outcomes (e.g., earnings, employment, graduate/ professional school enrollment) of college graduates while recognizing that other outcomes are also relevant across institutional settings. Through the use of current research, case studies, and best practices, each chapter highlights how postgraduate outcomes information is collected and used across the higher education spectrum. In this volume readers will learn: the internal and external demands for these data, the strengths and challenges of their data, and how to best communicate these data to various constituents. This is the 169th volume of this Jossey-Bass quarterly report series. Timely and comprehensive, New Directions for Institutional Research provides planners and administrators in all types of academic institutions with guidelines in such areas as resource coordination, information analysis, program evaluation, and institutional management.

Book excerpt: Published in partnership with the National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students. Analysis of bachelor’s degree completion suggests that only about a third of college graduates attend a single institution from start to finish. More than one quarter earn college credits from three or more schools before completing a degree. For most, these student-defined pathways lead to increased time-to-degree and higher costs. Many will simply drop out long before crossing the finish line. Ensuring college completion and success requires an understanding of the evolving nature of transfer transitions and a system-wide approach that reaches beyond two-year and four-year institutions to include high schools participating in dual enrollment programs and military college initiatives. A new edited collection offers insight into institutional and statewide partnerships that create clearly defined pathways to college graduation and career success for all students.

Book excerpt: This study looks at how many what types of undergraduate students are interested in a broad range of academic and occupational fields related to psychology. Specific and detailed data sets address many particular fields such as cognitive psychology, psychiatry, industrial psychology, clinical psychology, child psychology/counseling, social work and many other areas. Academic planners can pinpoint interest in particular fields by specific student demographics. Which areas of psychology are preferred by men? By women? Which fields most interest students from the highest or lowest income brackets? Which fields most appeal to students raised abroad or those raised in the US West or US South? In which fields are African American or Asian American students most interested?Hundreds of tables of data relating to interest in particular fields of psychology enable higher education leaders to focus programs on actual student demand. One data set looks specifically at graduate school intentions. Data in this 200+ page reports is based on a representative survey of 1289 undergraduate students at 4-year colleges in the USA. Just a few of this report's many findings are that:?African American and mixed race students were particularly interested and more than 39% of the former and nearly 41% of the latter expressed significant levels of interest in programs in psychology.?33% of women but only 21% of men were interested or highly interested in coursework in social psychology.?Students from a Lutheran or Mormon religious background were the most interested in pursuing psychotherapy.?25% of students living in fraternities or sororities were interested or highly interested in forensic psychology. The data is broken out by many variables, including but not limited to, race/ethnicity, gender, sexual preference, family income level, academic major, religion, housing situation, geographic origins, SAT/ACT scores, college grades and other personal variables. Data is also broken out by institutional variables such as college enrollment size, public/private status, tuition level, and Carnegie class or type of college.
