Book excerpt: Archaeological remains and historic structures and landscapes are important tangible reminders of the United States' rich and diverse cultural heritage. In recent years the stresses on these unique, nonrenewable cultural resources have increased dramatically. This report presents the primary findings of an assessment requested by the House of Representatives Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs. Focus is on the applications of preservation technologies rather than preservation disciplines. The study examines the current use of preservation technologies and identifies research and development needs. It also explores how improvements in Federal policy and implementation can make more effective use of technologies appropriate for managing this country's prehistoric and historic cultural resources. Appendices are: (1) "Cultural Resources Management Laws and Regulations"; (2) "Documentation and Conservation of Rock Art"; (3) "Registration and Private Ownership of Archaeological Objects"; (4) "National Register Criteria from the Introduction to: 'How to Apply the National Register Criteria for Evaluation'"; (5) "National Register of Historic Places Inventory--Nomination Form"; (6) "U.S. National Park Service Cultural Programs"; (7) "Advisory Council on Historic Preservation"; (8) "National Trust for Historic Preservation"; and (9) "National Building Museum." Book excerpt: Technology transfer has played an increasingly important role in historic preservation during the latter half of the twentieth century, a situation attested to by the undertaking of an important congressional study in 1986 that assessed the role of federal agencies in the field. In this book leading researchers update the earlier findings and contribute state-of-the-art reviews and evaluations of technological progress in their areas of expertise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the many properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places, only 7% are archaeological sites. With the Register designed to primarily assess the historical significance of standing sites, archaeologists have had difficulty translating eligibility criteria to sites known primarily from archaeological work. Hardesty and Little provide practical guidance for archaeologists and others on how to examine these properties for their historical significance, both for academic reasons and for proposal to the Register. This useful guide will be helpful for anyone working in a cultural resource management context with recent archaeological sites.

Phase 1. Cultural Resource Management Report, Number 249 written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Report describes results of Phase 1 archaeological & geomorphological survey of 121 ac. within the Batchtown Habitat Rehabilitation Enhancement Project (HREP), Pool 25, Mississippi River (mile 242 to mile 248, left bank), Calhoun County, Illinois. The project involves construction/enlargement of levees and 7 water control structures. Pedestrian survey and shovel testing located 3 prehistoric sites (11-C-2O6, 11-C-2O8, 11-C-209), 3 historic sites (11-C-2O5, 11- C-207, 11-C-211), and 1 prehistoric & historic site (11-C-21O). Potentially eligible sites 11-C-2O7, 11-C-2O8, 11-C-2O9 & 11-C-21O will be avoided by the project. Geomorphological investigations revealed land forms with potential for buried sites in the project's central portion; other areas have very little potential for containing cultural deposits. Project clearance in surveyed areas in regard to cultural resources is recommended. Survey was conducted in June, 1994 by American Resources Group, Ltd., for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District on lands managed for waterfowl by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The project is planned under the HREP, Environmental Management Program (EMP) established to enhance & rehabilitate the Upper Mississippi River system. (AN).

In response to public and private development, surveying is needed to accurately inventory the cultural resources of a region and provide guidance for their preservation and management. Greg White and Tom King provide a handy introduction to students, field novices, and land managers on the strategies, methods, and logic of contemporary survey work. In addition to providing the legal and historical context for this endeavor the book provides a heavily illustrated, practical guide to conducting a survey to help beginners understand how it works in practice. This volume is perfect for an archaeological methods class, field school, or reference collection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book undertakes a comparative study of the history and development of legislative and administrative systems in operation today for the protection of archaeological monuments. With the exception of Scandinavia and the United Kingdom, no country adopted a positive policy towards the protection and conservation of its archaeological and historical heritage until the twentieth century. Moreover, it was not until the middle of that century, under the threat of wholesale devastation from extensive schemes for social and economic development, that the accelerating disappearance of the sites and monuments of Antiquity became the object of intensive study and legislation. Since then systems of cultural resource management have developed throughout the world. A range of countries (from Europe, America, Asia and Africa) representing a diversity of political and ideological systems - capitalist, socialist and ex-colonial - have been selected as being broadly representative of the variety of these systems. The case studies have been written by distinguished archaeologists and provide critical evaluations of the objectives and shortcomings of these systems.
