But Paksenarrion could never have fulfilled her destiny had it not been for one who came before. Gird, the peasant. Gird, the armsman. Gird, the Liberator, who taught his people that they could fight - and win - against oppression. This is his story. Surrender None is the first of two prequels to the hugely popular DEED OF PAKSENARRION trilogy.

Book excerpt: SURRENDER is a mesmerizing psychological thriller from extraordinary novelist Sonya Hartnett. I am dying: it’s a beautiful word. Like the long slow sigh of a cello: dying. But the sound of it is the only beautiful thing about it. As life slips away, Gabriel looks back over his brief twenty years, which have been clouded by frustration and humiliation. A small, unforgiving town and distant, punitive parents ensure that he is never allowed to forget the horrific mistake he made as a child. He has only two friends - his dog, Surrender, and the unruly wild boy, Finnigan, a shadowy doppelganger with whom the meek Gabriel once made a boyhood pact. But when a series of arson attacks grips the town, Gabriel realizes how unpredictable and dangerous Finnigan is. As events begin to spiral violently out of control, it becomes devastatingly clear that only the most extreme measures will rid Gabriel of Finnigan for good.

Book excerpt: A woman defies expectations—including those of an arrogant earl—in the first regency romance in New York Times bestselling author Madeline Hunter's Fairbourne Quartet. Despite the limits of her sex, Emma Fairbourne intends to run her late father's prestigious London auction house. Of course, she's not addlepated enough to do it openly and scare away her wealthy collectors. Instead, she and her friend concoct a deception, hiring a handsome and charming front man who will do her bidding... All would have proceeded smoothly—if it weren’t for the maddening interference of Darius, the arrogant Earl of Southwaite, who was her father’s “silent partner”. Darius has no interest in running an auction house—and he's certainly not interested in allowing the lovely Miss Fairbourne to run it either, her ludicrous scheme notwithstanding. But headstrong Emma is like no other lady he has ever encountered, refusing to follow his dictates. Holding his temper in check, Darius decides to attack on a different front. There is another way to achieve her surrender, one far more pleasurable for both of them...

Book excerpt: “Let me in, let me in,” the Songman pleaded. What did these words mean? Kidnapped and tortured, Mary Meyers had no idea. Her only thought was to escape from the lyrical miscreant and his fiendish henchman, Dobson. When the opportunity came, Mary slipped away and traveled back home. Yet her house was cold, deserted. Too exhausted to leave, she huddled in a corner and fell asleep. Read McClaine discovered Mary’s frozen body late at night, and his only thought was to rush her to Bridgeport Hospital. However, upon reviving in the warmth of Read’s truck, Mary blatantly refused medical attention. What choice did he have but to take her to his cabin? Now Mary was warm, well-fed. If she could spend a few months in Read’s home and grow stronger, enhance her strange power, she could face the Songman again. Was there another reason she didn’t want to leave? Was she falling in love with Read McClaine, a man who detested marriage? It was time. The Songman was calling to her, willing her to return. Was she strong enough to defeat him? If she failed, her newfound friends would die, including the man she loved, Read McClaine.

Book excerpt: Do not be shaped by this world; instead be changed within by a new way of thinking. Then you will be able to decide what God wants for you; you will know what is good and pleasing to him and what is perfect. (Romans 12:2) Emotions saturate Scripture. God is an emotional Godnot in the same way we talk about an emotional person. But God is certainly aware of the runaway emotions were referring to when we put a negative spin on emotions. We cant escape Gods presence. That means he sees and hears alongside us, including our (often messy) emotions. And if we let him, God will replace those untruthful messages weve learned about emotions along the journey of life with the truthful messages reflecting his character, will, and commands. God didnt mess up his design of you. He created you in his image. He has a plan for your life. He even knew what mistakes youd make throughout your life, and he still loves you and wants nothing more than to be in an ever-deepening relationship with you. He will pursue youwhether youre not following him and need to make that decision or youre following him marginally or youre passionate about him. He designed you for more, and he will pursue you, tapping you on the shoulder, whispering in your ear, and knocking on the door of your heart so that your daily lifeincluding your decisions, attitudes, and yes, emotionsis impacted in the purity of who he created you to be and the everyday messiness of living on Earth. If your emotions arent reflecting the character of God well, youre probably distorting something and need to get back on track. Thats what this journey is about: growing closer to God, getting to know him better, and committing to reflecting him more and more on a daily basis. Pure Emotion will dig into, reflect upon, and live out Gods Word. Chapters include: Week One: The Emotional Experience Week Two: Whats a Pure Emotion? Week Three: Fear Week Four: Jealousy Week Five: Anger Week Six: Anxiety and Peace Week Seven: Frustration Week Eight: Guilt and Shame Week Nine: Joy Week Ten: Living Emotionally Pure

Book excerpt: The Irish Yearbook of International Law (IYIL) supports research into Ireland's practice in international affairs and foreign policy, filling a gap in existing legal scholarship and assisting in the dissemination of Irish thinking and practice on matters of international law. On an annual basis, the Yearbook presents peer-reviewed academic articles and book reviews on general issues of international law. Designated correspondents provide reports on international law developments in Ireland, Irish practice in international bodies, Ireland and the Law of the Sea and the law of the European Union as relevant to developments in Ireland. In addition, the Yearbook reproduces key documents that reflect Irish practice on contemporary issues of international law. Publication of the Irish Yearbook of International Law makes Irish practice and opinio juris more readily available to Governments, academics and international bodies when determining the content of international law. In providing a forum for the documentation and analysis of North-South relations the Yearbook also makes an important contribution to post-conflict and transitional justice studies internationally. As a matter of editorial policy, the Yearbook seeks to promote a multilateral approach to international affairs, reflecting and reinforcing Ireland's long-standing commitment to multilateralism as a core element of foreign policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking comparative study of the dynamics and pathologies of war in modern times. Over recent decades, Pulitzer-winning historian John W. Dower has addressed the roots and consequences of war from multiple perspectives. Here he examines the cultures of war revealed by four powerful events--Pearl Harbor, Hiroshima, 9-11, and the invasion of Iraq in the name of a war on terror. The list of issues examined and themes explored is wide-ranging: failures of intelligence and imagination, wars of choice and "strategic imbecilities, " faith-based secular thinking as well as more overtly holy wars, the targeting of noncombatants, and the almost irresistible logic--and allure--of mass destruction. Dower also sets the U.S. occupations of Japan and Iraq side by side in strikingly original ways. He offers comparative insights into individual and institutional behavior and pathologies that transcend "cultures" in the more traditional sense, and that ultimately go beyond war-making alone.--From publisher description.

Book excerpt: Portrayed by past historians as the greatest guide and Indian fighter in the West, Kit Carson has become in recent years a historical pariah--a brutal murderer who betrayed the Navajos, and an unwitting dupe of American expansion, and a racist. Many historians now question both his reputation and his place in the pantheon of American heroes. Here we are urged to reconsider Carson yet again. Carson was a man of the nineteenth century, whose racial views and actions were much like those of his contemporaries.

Prince Terrowin, the youngest son of King Grayson, is forced into exile, when the Kingdom of Dwykath attacks the Kingdom of Allisure. Magic is used in the bloody battle, signifying the evil force, controlled by Master Diablo, will use any means to win. Terrowin travels to the remote parts of the world, waiting for a time he can return to reclaim his heritage. As an evil force asserts control of the land, Dorian of the Dark Rose witches, and his step-sister, Ayleth of the White Rose order, conspire to fight the evil forces. They know they must reunite the two orders of witches, and need the help of Prince Terrowin, if and when he returns.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most wars between countries end quickly and at relatively low cost. The few in which high-intensity fighting continues for years bring about a disproportionate amount of death and suffering. What separates these few unusually long and intense wars from the many conflicts that are far less destructive? In Logics of War, Alex Weisiger tests three explanations for a nation's decision to go to war and continue fighting regardless of the costs. He combines sharp statistical analysis of interstate wars over the past two centuries with nine narrative case studies. He examines both well-known conflicts like World War II and the Persian Gulf War, as well as unfamiliar ones such as the 1864–1870 Paraguayan War (or the War of the Triple Alliance), which proportionally caused more deaths than any other war in modern history. When leaders go to war expecting easy victory, events usually correct their misperceptions quickly and with fairly low casualties, thereby setting the stage for a negotiated agreement. A second explanation involves motives born of domestic politics; as war becomes more intense, however, leaders are increasingly constrained in their ability to continue the fighting. Particularly destructive wars instead arise from mistrust of an opponent's intentions. Countries that launch preventive wars to forestall expected decline tend to have particularly ambitious war aims that they hold to even when fighting goes poorly. Moreover, in some cases, their opponents interpret the preventive attack as evidence of a dispositional commitment to aggression, resulting in the rejection of any form of negotiation and a demand for unconditional surrender. Weisiger’s treatment of a topic of central concern to scholars of major wars will also be read with great interest by military historians, political psychologists, and sociologists.
