This small, ethnically plural society was torn by severe political conflict. Elections in November 1973 had brought an end to political collaboration between Creoles and Hindustanis, the country's two largest ethnic groups; and the Creoles, now in control of the government, were resolutely pushing (over Hindustani opposition) to sever their colonial ties with the Netherlands. But defections from the Creole benches during the summer of 1975 had produced a virtual stalemate in the legislature, heightening fears that the government would act unilaterally. The failure of Creole and Hindustani leaders to resolve their differences led many observers in both the Netherlands and Surinam to predict a collapse of democracy and/or violent conflict once independence was proclaimed. Ironically, the dramatic, last-minute resolution of the struggle precipitated not only general jubilation and relief, but also self-congratulation, as the leaders of Surinam's multiethnic society, long priding themselves on achieve ments in harmonious understanding, pulled out all stops in their indepen dence day oratory. No-one could forget the nightmare of the preceding few years. But neither could anyone familiar with Surinam's historical develop ment flatly reject the rhetoric as being without some foundation. In fact, Surinam, while severely tested by the most complex multi-ethnic population in the Caribbean, does have a record of which she can be proud and which deserves to be more widely known.

Book excerpt: While the study of race relations in the United States continues to inspire and influence European thinking, Europeans have yet to confront their own history. To be black in Europe—whether during the sixteenth century or today—means sharing one crucial experience: being part of a small, but visible minority. European slave-owners, company directors, and investors in the distant past maintained an ocean-wide gap between themselves and the enslaved in the plantation colonies of the Caribbean. In the following centuries, this distance persisted. Even today, to be black in Europe often means to be one of a few black persons in a group. A racial pattern of exclusion has characterized European policy for more than four centuries. Dienke Hondius identifies ideas and attitudes toward "blackness," the concept of race as visible difference, developed in western Europe. She argues that racial discourses are generally dominated by paternalism—a concept usually used to explain power structures that is often applied to the nineteenth century. Hondius identifies five patterns of paternalism that influenced Europe much earlier and iniated trends of imagery and perception. Taking a chronological and thematic approach, Hondius first focuses on southern European societies in the Early Modern period and moves to northwest European societies in the Modern period. Addressing religion, law, and science, she concludes with a synthesis of developments from the twentieth century to the present.

As a result of technological and methodological progress in archaeology, mobility has become increasingly visible on the level of the individual. However, as a concept it does not seem to fit with current approaches in Amazonian archaeology, which favour a move away from viewing small mobile groups as models for the deeper past. Instead of ignoring such ethnographic tyrannies, in this book they are considered to be essential for arriving at a different past. Viewing archaeological mobility as the sum of movements of both people and objects, the empirical part of Amotopoan Trails focuses on Amotopo, a small contemporary Trio village in the interior of Suriname. The movements of the Amotopoans are tracked and positioned in a century of Trio dynamics, ultimately yielding a recent archaeology of Surinamese-Trio movements for the Sipaliwini River basin (1907-2008). Alongside the construction of this archaeology, novel mobility concepts are introduced. They provide the conceptual footholds which enable the envisioning of mobility at various temporal scales, from a decade up to a century, the sequence of which has remained a blind spot in Caribbean and Amazonian archaeology.

Al vrij snel na de stichting van de plantagekolonie Suriname (1651) ontsnapten Afrikaanse slaven om een menswaardig bestaan op te bouwen in het immense regenwoud. Zij vestigden zich in het labyrint van kreken en rivieren en voerden vandaar een felle guerrilla tegen de blanke planters. Een van deze groepen Marrons, zoals de gevluchte slaven in de literatuur bekend staan, is de Okanisi. Een zwarte vrijstaat in Suriname vertelt de geschiedenis van de Okanisi in de achttiende eeuw. Het is een geschiedenis van hekserij en orakels, van knechting en ontsnapping, van opsporing en oorlog. Na jaren van strijd kwam de koloniale overheid tot de conclusie dat zij de Marrons niet onderwerpen kon en bood hun in 1760 een vrede aan die door de Okanisi werd geaccepteerd. Het sluiten van de vrede tussen overheid en Okanisi was de erkenning van de eerste ‘zwarte vrijstaat’ in Suriname. De geschiedenis van de Okanisi is geschreven op basis van uniek materiaal. Dat materiaal bestaat uit verslagen van de koloniale oorlog tegen de Marrons en uit mondelinge overleveringen van de Okanisi. Een zwarte vrijstaat toont overtuigend aan dat in het verleden het heden ligt.

Een van de officieren was de twintigjarige kapitein R.F. van Raders. Bijna dertig jaar lang bleef hij werkzaam op het eiland: eerst als garnizoensofficier, daarna als adjudant van de gouverneur en vervolgens als garnizoenscommandant. De laatste negen jaren van zijn verblijf op Curaçao (1836-1845) bekleedde Van Raders de hoogste bestuurlijke functie, die van gezaghebber. Economisch gezien vormde de periode 1816-1845 een moeilijke tijd voor de kolonie. Op Curaçao kon de oude overslaghandel zijn vroegere bloei niet herwinnen. Van raders legde bij zijn aantreden als gezaghebber aan de minister van Koloniën een welvaartsplan voor. Curaçao zou voortaan met eigen agrarische exportproducten de scheepvaart gaan bevorderen. Met groot enthousiasme probeerde Van Raders de teelt van nieuwe producten ingang te doen vinden. Hoewel tegenslagen en tegenwerking de uitvoering van zijn plannen van meet a aan vergezelden, bleef de gezaghebber overtuigd van de juistheid van zijn inzichten. Tot dusver onderbelichte onderwerpen in de West-Indische geschiedschrijving komen in Een leven in de West; Van Raders en zijn werkzaamheden op Curaçao aan bod. Voor het eerst wordt het leven en de maatschappelijke positie van garnizoensmilitairen op Curaçao beschreven. Wim Renkema heeft diepgaand onderzoek verricht in overheidsarchieven, wat geleid heeft tot nieuwe vondsten, bijvoorbeeld over de wijze waarop Van Raders het streven naar gelijkberechtiging van de rooms-katholieke bevolkingsgroep steunde.
