It is estimated that over 12 million people suffer from this disease and about a fourth of them have some deformity. However, the majority of deformities seen in leprosy are not peculiar to the disease. They are also seen in other peripheral neuropathies, including trauma, and systemic diseases like diabetes. The principles of management and surgical treatment of deformities secondary to peripheral nerve disease are very much the same, no matter what the cause. This comprehensive volume on the subject will therefore be of value to surgeons all over the world, not just in countries with a high incidence of leprosy. Three major chapters of the book deal with correction of the deformities of the face, the hand, and the foot. Three other chapters cover related aspects such as pathogenesis and pathology, the skin and peripheral nerves, complications and secondary disorders, complementary changes and rehabilitation. Illustrations are provided wherever relevant and useful. The authors' combined experience dates back to the fifties, and they have thus been able to overview the development of reconstructive surgery in leprosy from its very inception. The result is a fund of information and practical knowledge which will be useful to all surgeons working with patients with peripheral nerve disease.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers clear, detailed guidance on all aspects of prognostic evaluation in patients who have been involved in a serious accident with neurological consequences or have been diagnosed with a severe neurological illness. It covers the full range of disorders of the central and the peripheral nervous system, not only providing very accurate prognostic estimates but also addressing relevant clinical issues, differential diagnosis, and the role of imaging. The book is practically oriented and designed for use on a daily basis when assessing prognosis and discussing the outcome with patients, their families, and other interested parties. It will support patient–doctor partnerships by ensuring that the most professional answers can be given to patients' and doctors' questions and by promoting realistic expectations of the effect of medical interventions. In addition, it will enable doctors, lawyers, and other professionals to understand relevant issues when an estimate of prognosis and life expectancy is the subject of legal dispute.

Book excerpt: Disorders of the peripheral nervous system (PNS) are the cause of prominent neurological symptoms including weakness, sensory loss, pain and autonomic dysfunction associated with deficits, morbidity and mortality. These disorders may be primary hereditary or cryptogenic neurologic disorders confined to the PNS or part of the pathology of both the central nervous system and the PNS. Most PNS disorders are secondary to other system disorders and may be responsive to treatment of the primary disease. Important advances have been obtained in several areas including molecular genetics, biochemistry, immunology, morphology and physiology that have enhanced our understanding of the causes and consequences of damage to peripheral nerve. Understanding of both these groups of PNS diseases has greatly expanded over recent years and has led to important advances of treatment both to protect and to repair damages of peripheral nerve. This volume provides an overview of the state-of-the-art of examination, diagnosis and treatment of these very diverse disorders and will be of interest to both the research and clinical neuroscience and neurology communities. - Covers both hereditary and cryptogenic neurologic disorders - Includes advances in the basic science of PNS from molecular genetics, biochemistry, immunology, morphology and physiology - Detailed coverage of neuropathy in connective tissue disorders, infectious disorders, metabolic disorders and malignancy

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of the first edition in 1959, Apley's System of Orthopaedics and Fractures has been an essential textbook for those seeking to understand the structure and function of the musculoskeletal system, its diseases, and its response to trauma. As the leading textbook of modern orthopaedics for over 50 years, this book is a testament to the late Alan Apley's skills as a teacher, and the care and forethought he brought to the presentation of the content. The current authors have developed and extended this foundation to produce a thoroughly modern textbook of orthopaedic surgery, bringing contemporary expertise while retaining the book's characteristic philosophy and approach. They are joined by a selection of expert contributors from around the world who provide added material on a wide variety of subjects— including radiology, open fractures, neuromuscular disorders, and inflammatory arthropathies. This ninth edition echoes its predecessors in following Apley's approach to the orthopaedic patient. As before, the work is divided into three sections: General Orthopaedics, Regional Orthopaedics, and Fractures and Joint Injuries. The material has been fully updated and revised and includes more than 1,000 illustrations. Apley's System's wide readership of practicing orthopaedic surgeons, postgraduate trainees and residents in orthopaedics and general surgery, A&E specialists, and physiotherapists is evidence of the authors' ability to instruct and inspire. The book is a truly fitting introduction to modern-day orthopaedics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This well-illustrated book is a comprehensive guide to the cutaneous clinical presentations of mycobacterial infections. The Mycobacterium genus includes over 170 species, nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) having been added to the obligate human pathogens such as M. tuberculosis and M. leprae. NTM are widely distributed in the environment with high isolation rates worldwide; the skin is a major target with variable clinical manifestations. A current resurgence in tuberculosis is aggravated by the synergy with human immunodeficiency virus, the breakdown of health care systems, and the rise in multidrug-resistant disease, as the incidence of leprosy remains stable, at around 250,000 new cases annually, regardless of effective antibiotic therapy. Presentations of various cutaneous infections caused by mycobacteria may be overlooked by clinicians owing the lack of familiarity with tuberculosis, leprosy, and the related NTM clinical features. This handy guide will help the dermatologist to spot the different clinical manifestations, make a prompt diagnosis, and apply effective treatment.
