Book excerpt: This book will be helpful to professionals who use the vascular system of the spine, spinal cord, and brain in their practice and in their search for better understanding, reliability, and safety in their decisions and actions by providing a new conceptual approach to the vascular supply to the brain spine and spinal cord. Statements such as "the median cerebral artery is a branch of the anterior cerebral artery" or "the internal carotid and vertebral arteries are minor vessels, they can be absent. They represent the most common distribution pattern to the arterial circle at the base of the brain, but certainly not the only one" show that the authors are far from providing the traditional presentation of the arterial system in man.

Book excerpt: Based on the principles of functional vascular anatomy and endovascular treatment described in the first three volumes of Surgical Neuroangiography, Volumes 4 and 5 complete the series that takes a revolutionary approach in endovascular neurosurgery. The authors are world leaders, recipients of numerous prizes in medicine, and can offer the unique fruit of their combined anatomical, clinical and therapeutic experience to investigate and understand the disease process, its anatomical features and its relationship to patients' symptoms and treatment planning. Volume 4 is geared to track the vascular abnormalities of the brain; Volume 5 the vascular abnormalities of the spine and spinal cord. Both volumes identify the specifics of vascular lesions and set the interventional neuroradiological techniques before a background of proper clinical analysis and expertise. Each volume emphasizes the strategy and management objectives from an endovascular perspective taking into consideration a multidisciplinary approach where neurologists, neurosurgeons and neuroradiologists examine the clinical presentation, the diagnostic study and the therapeutic options in a joint decision-making process.

Book excerpt: The English Edition contains a few differences from the first ItaHan Edition, which require an explanation. Firstly, some imag es, especially some 3D reconstructions, have been modified in order to make them clearer. Secondly, in agreement with the Publisher, we have disowned one of our statements in the preface to the Italian Edition. Namely, we have now added a brief introductory text for each section, by way of explanation to the anatomical and physiological notes. This should make it easier for the reader to understand and refer to this Atlas. These differences derive from our experience with the previous edition and are meant to be an improvement thereof Hopefully, there will be more editions to follow, so that we may further improve our work and keep ourselves busy on lone some evenings. Finally, the improvements in this edition are a reminder to the reader that one should never purchase the first edition of a work. UAquila, January 2006 The Authors Preface to the Italian Edition I have been meaning to publish an atlas of neuroradiologic cranio-encephaHc anatomy for at least the last decade. Normal anatomy has always been of great and charming interest to me. Over the years, while preparing lectures for my students, I have always enjoyed lingering on anatomical details that today are rendered with astonishing realism by routine diagnostic ima ging.

Book excerpt: Embolization has been performed in many European countries and in North America for over 20 years and is now beginning to gain accep tance in other countries. At first, experience with these techniques was shared in the form of individual case reports; today some centers have treated enough patients to be able to transform this anecdotal material into more concrete data. For the last 10 of these 20 years, the two of us have been deeply involved, encouraged, and stimulated by the interest created by the few pioneers in endovascular techniques. In 1978, when we first met, our discussion on embolization could have been summarized as disagreement. It soon became obvious that these differences were primarily related to our different individual back grounds. One of us having a strong orientation toward anatomy, and the other toward technique. We realized that these apparently opposing approaches complement each other and decided to combine them to our mutual benefit. This collaboration has matured into the search for improvements in patient care and for the safest, most reliable, and most responsible manner of treatment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction of multidetector spiral CT into clinical practice is without any doubt one of the most important technical developments in the field of computed tomography in general, and spiral CT in particular, in recent years. Indeed, multislice CT technology, based on the spiral CT technique invented by W. Kalender almost 20 years ago, has opened immense and totally new perspectives for better utilisation of contrast medium during the examination, for optimal multiplanar reconstruction and for increased patient throughput. The potential applications, more specifically in the area of CT angiography of the brain and the heart and vessels, are most interesting and definitely contribute to better patient care as well as to more effi cient utilisation of equipment. These exciting new clinical applications explain the keen desire of radiologists and other clinicians to hear and learn more about the first results obtained with this new equipment in daily clinical practice. This book will satisfy their needs. Professor Maximilian F. Reiser was among the first to install multidetector CT in his department in Munich and to gain experience with this new radiological tool. He was also able to organise a very successful and well attended international meeting on this hot topic as early as z 2000 in Starnberg, Germany.

Book excerpt: The 3D Angiographic Atlas of Neurovascular Anatomy and Pathology is the first atlas to present neurovascular information and images based on catheter 3D rotational angiographic studies. The images in this book are the culmination of work done by Neil M. Borden over several years using one of the first 3D neurovascular angiographic suites in the United States. With the aid of this revolutionary technology, Dr Borden has performed numerous diagnostic neurovascular angiographic studies as well as endovascular neurosurgical procedures. The spectacular 3D images he obtained are extensively labeled and juxtaposed with conventional 2D angiograms for orientation and comparison. Anatomical color drawings and concise descriptions of the major intracranial vascular territories further enhance understanding of the complex cerebral vasculature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is unique in that it provides the reader with the most up-to-date terminology used to describe the human nervous system (central and peripheral) and the related sensory organs, i.e., the Terminologia Neuroanatomica (TNA), the official terminology of the IFAA (International Federation of Associations of Anatomists). The book provides a succinct but detailed review of the neuroanatomical structures of the human body and will greatly benefit not only various specialists such as (neuro)anatomists, neurologists and neuroscientists, but also students taking neuroanatomy and neuroscience courses. The book offers a high yield, combined presentation of neuroanatomical illustrations and text and provides the reader a ‘one-stop source’ for studying the intricacies of the human nervous system and its sensory organs. It includes an alphabetical list of official English terms and synonyms with the official Latin terms and synonyms from the TNA. With regard to the entries, the name of the item in standardized English is provided, followed by synonyms and the official TNA Latin term, Latin synonyms and eponyms, a short description and in many cases one or more illustrations. To facilitate the use of illustrations, certain entries such as the gyri or sulci of the cerebral cortex are presented together with extensive cross-references. Terms that form part of a certain structure (such as the amygdaloid body, the thalamus and the hypothalamus) are listed under the respective structure. Segments and branches of arteries are discussed under the main artery, for example the A1–A5 segments under the anterior cerebral artery. Most nerves can be found following their origin from the brachial, cervical and lumbosacral plexuses. However, the major nerves of the limbs are discussed separately, as are the cranial nerves. Nuclei can be found by their English name or under Nuclei by their eponym.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book systematically describes the angioarchitecture of the spinal cord. Microradiographs of superficial and intrinsic arterial supply and venous drainage patterns provide the anatomical basis needed to understand spinal vascular disorders. These post mortem studies are supplemented by clinical spinal angiographies and case studies. Rapid advances in imaging technology have facilitated the solution of many diagnostic problems concerning diseases of the spine and spinal cord. But this is less true for vascular diseases of the spinal cord or diseases secondarily involving them. Furthermore, safely using interventional procedures or open surgery still requires a profound knowledge of the vascular anatomy involved. Accordingly, a growing demand for training in this special field has become evident over the last 25 years, making improvement of this knowledge in all Neuro-Specialities dealing with diagnostic and therapeutic problems of spinal disorders a highly desirable goal.
