Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surgical Anatomy for Students This work contains the substance of a series of demonstra tions, delivered by myself, to students in course of preparation for the final examinations. The book is intended for students to use with the living model. The study of Surgical Anatomy from illustrations alone is answerable for many of the rejections in this subject at the final examinations. N 0 picture or description will enable a student to instantly compress the. Subclavian artery, place his finger on a given prominence, or name a deeply seated tendon. These demonstrations have always been given upon the living subject, and I insist that students should actually feel and delineate the structures discussed. The allusions 'to operations and injuries are intended to give interest to the text. Knowledge of a surgical operation, to be of practical value, should be complete in every detail. The scope of a work of this nature, forbids that it should in any way be regarded, as a guide to the Operations of Surgery. Generally, the author has followed the teaching of the standard British and Continental Works, and to these he gladly. Acknowledges his indebtedness. On a number of points, however-as, for example, regarding the function of the periosteum - he has followed that of his teacher, Sir William Macewen, whose opinions are based not merely upon clinical experience, but also in many cases upon long Series of experiments. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Surgical Anatomy Anatomic facts are dry only as they are isolated. Trans lated into their clinical values they are clothed with living interest. No teacher can impart, . Or student assimilate, all the details of anatomy: The facts must be sifted, their comparative values fixed, and the reason for their acquisition demonstrated by directing attention to the practical problems with which they are associated. Book excerpt: Surgical Anatomy Joseph Maclise expansive gaze over all allying and allied species, the intellect bodies forth to its vision the full appointed form of natural majesty; and after having experienced the manifold analogies and differentials of the many, is thereby enabled, when it returns to the study of the one, to view this one of human type under manifold points of interest, to the appreciation of which the understanding never wakens otherwise. If it did not happen that the study of the human form (confined to itself) had some practical bearing, such study could not deserve the name of anatomical, while anatomical means comparative, and whilst comparison implies inductive reasoning. However, practical anatomy, such as it is, is concerned with an exact knowledge of the relationship of organs as they stand in reference to each other, and to the whole design of which these organs are the integral parts We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Operative Surgery, for Students and Practitioners IN this volume an endeavor has been made to combine, in a practical manner, the subjects of surgical anatomy and operative surgery, because a knowledge of the one is essential to the proper study of the other. Diagrammatic drawings have been used largely for the purpose of illustration, because these, in my judgment, are the most satisfactory for teaching. An effort has been made to exclude all those anatomical considerations that are purely technical and not of practical value in the performance of surgical operations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Surgical Anatomy There is of course nothing original in such a book, which is meant to give juniors a selection of some of the more important points in surgical anatomy. As all anatomy is in a sense surgical and medical too, a selection has necessarily to be made. Dental anatomy has received fuller treatment than is usual in books of this size, because in Manchester, medical and dental students receive much of their instruction together, and it is thought that so much dental knowledge as is here presented cannot but be useful to medical practitioners. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Operative Surgery, Covering the Surgical Anatomy and Operative Technic Involved in the Operations of General Surgery: Written for Students and Practitioners The clinical aspect of Operative Surgery has been less fully dealt with and in generalizations in connection with groups of operations, rather than specifically in connection with individual operations. An apology for the amount of Anatomy given may seem, to some, meces sary. From the standpoint of the pure technician, Operative Surgery is, largely, Applied Anatomy - the application of the facts of Surgical Anatomy during the progress of Surgical Manipulations - the resulting Operative Technic being more or less perfect as the knowledge of the Surgical Anatomy and the conduction of the Surgical Manipulations are more or less perfect. Theoretically, it is proper to expect fourth - year Students to come into the Operating Room with their Anatomy in an available form for surgical work - practically, this is rarely found - and is often absent in seasoned Operators. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied Surgical Anatomy, Regionally Presented, for the Use of Students and Practitioners of Medicine The study' of Anatomy is relieved of much of its difficulty when it is approached on the practical side. Isolated details do not appeal to the faculty of interest, but when they are set forth in their natural relationship, and their practical application is pointed out, the mind grasps and recollects them with facility. As Anatomy is the most basic of all the medical sciences, a working knowledge of its data is indispensable for the study and practice of scientific medicine and sur gery. The author has endeavored to embody these principles in the present work, and to do it in such a manner as to answer the needs of both students and practitioners. The plan of the work has been developed from twelve years' experience in teaching Anatomy. The author believes the form of presentation he has followed to be the best for didactic lectures, and that descriptive Anatomy is most advantageously learned from text books and in the dissecting room. The regional and topographical method of treating Applied Anatomy is likewise the most convenient for clinical purposes. It is scarcely necessary to state that in order not to exceed the proper limits of a book designed for clinical and didactic purposes a most careful selection had to be made from the vast aggregate of knowledge constituting the modern science of anatomy. If in parts the text may appear quite as much like an anatomical surgery as a surgical anatomy, it is because of the author's belief that this is the best way to Complete the study of anatomy and to begin the study of surgery. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surgical Applied Anatomy Applied anatomy has, I imagine, a twofold func tion. On the one hand it serves to give a precise basis to those incidents and procedures in practice that more especially involve anatomical knowledge; on the other hand it endues the dull items of that knowledge with meaning and interest by the aid of illustrations drawn from common medical and surgical experience. In this latter aspect it bears somewhat the same relation to Systematic Anatomy that a series of experiments in Physics bears to a treatise dealing with the bare data of that science. The student of Human Anatomy has Often a nebulous notion that what he is learning will sometime prove of service to him and may be conscious also that the study is a valuable, if somewhat unexciting, mental exercise. Beyond these impressions he must. Regard his efforts as concerned merely in the accumulation of a number of hard, unassimilable facts. It should be one object of Applied Anatomy to invest these facts with the interest derived from an association with the circumstances of daily life; it should make the dry bones live. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Surgical Anatomy of the Horse, Vol. 1 of 4 Some years ago, when Tutor in Surgery, it occurred to the author that, as a rule, students made very little real use of the subject of Anatomy in the diagnosis of surgical affections and in the practice of the surgical art. Whilst conducting tutorial classes, however, it was elicited that this was by no means due to the students' deficient knowledge of the subject of Anatomy as a whole, but rather to the fact that Anatomy and Surgery were taught quite separately as subjects absolutely independent of one another. This led to a cogitation as to the true value of the subject of Anatomy to the student, with the result that whilst admitting its psychological value as a means of developing the faculty of observation the author is impelled to the conclusion that the subject is primarily and fundamentally utilitarian, and that the teaching of it should always be in association with the subject of Surgery, the necessary emphasis being laid on those parts concerned in the performance of operations. The student is thus from the beginning made aware of the connection which exists between the subjects, his interest is aroused, and he obtains material assistance throughout in the process of mental assimilation.
