Better understanding of surface water (SW) and groundwater (GW) interactions and water balances have become indispensable for management decisions. This study sought to characterize SW-GW interactions in two irrigated valleys in northern New Mexico by (1) developing detailed water budgets to estimate deep percolation (DP); and (2) characterizing the response of shallow aquifers to DP. Detailed field measurements of irrigation water, soil water content, and climate data were used for the water budget calculations. Additionally, a passive wick lysimeter experiment was done to have a physical measure of DP. Monitoring wells were used to monitor water levels and characterize the GW response after irrigation. Results of the WBM for the 2013 irrigation season showed that average DP as a percentage of the total water budget was the single greatest component at El Rito (43%) and Rio Hondo (46%). At Alcalde, change in soil water content accounted for most of the irrigation water with 52%; DP on average accounted for 39%. Differences in water availability determined the application depth, application rate, and the irrigation scheduling at the three fields. Results from the passive lysimeter showed inconsistencies at the three experimental sites. Consequently, data for the passive lysimeter experiment were considered inconclusive to be used for further analysis. Monitoring wells showed a rapid response to DP for all irrigation events at the three study sites. The behavior of the response was different between sites and among irrigations. Water increases in response to irrigation ranged from 186 to 0.3 cm. The smaller water level peaks were observed at the Alcalde study site which presented the smallest average DP value. Well response at Rio Hondo was shown to be influenced by the distance and location of the water source on relation to the wells. Well data at Rio Hondo suggested that the shallow aquifer flows from the acequia towards the river. The connectivity between SW and GW in these systems generated shallow groundwater recharge. This phenomenon and the GW flowing towards the river suggest that acequia irrigated valleys could function as temporary hydraulic reservoirs in northern New Mexico.
