Book excerpt: "Shot peening is a cold working mechanical deformation process consisting of bombarding a metallic surface with small spherical media, called shots, at velocities commonly in the range of 10 to 100 m/s. Upon impact, the shots generate a near-surface deformed layer containing local hardening as well as compressive residual stresses, resulting in an improved fatigue resistance. However, the dependence of shot velocity and percentage of the total area covered by shot impacts on the surface modification introduced by shot peening are not well understood. The hardness and residual stress profiles beneath shot peened surfaces were investigated using nanoindentation experiments for the situations of three different average shot velocities, corresponding to 35 m/s, 54 m/s and 66 m/s, and two surface coverages, corresponding to a single shot peening impingement and full coverage (100%). For the situation (i) of a single impingement, a new polishing procedure was developed allowing locating an isolated single impingement, verifying that the impingement was produced by a shot that impacted at normal incidence, as well as preparing the surface such that nanoindentation could be performed on the impingement's cross-section. It was demonstrated that both hardness and compressive residual stresses increased with an increase in shot velocity. The experimental residual stress results were compared to those from numerical simulations that utilized the same peening parameters as the experiments. It was observed that the experimental results demonstrated similar behavior and were of the same order of magnitude as those predicted numerically. The main difference was that the experimental results demonstrated a maximum compressive residual stress that was independent of shot velocity. For the situation (ii) of full coverage, channelling contrast imaging in a scanning electron microscope revealed that there were recrystallized grains adjacent to the shot peened edge. Additionally, the hardness and compressive residual stresses were observed to increase with an increase in shot velocity. Similarly to the single impingement, the location of maximum compressive residual stress was independent of shot velocity." --

Book excerpt: Stress corrosion data have been obtained from shot peened specimens cut in the short transverse direction from an aluminum alloy extrusion to specification D.T.D. 5054. The specimens were prepared for test in three different ways to obtain three different residual macro stress systems, typical of the conditions in which the alloy is used in service; it has been shown that after shot peening, the stress-corrosion properties of each of the three groups of specimens have been improved to a marked extent. X-ray diffraction studies on the specimens have shown that for the particular intensity of employed, the resulting highly stressed compressive layer on the surface is of the order 0.006 in. thick and that all evidence of the pre-peening residual stress on the specimen surface has been obliterated. The residual stress measurements show that the balancing tensile stresses are distributed through the remainder of the section rather than concentrated in peak form immediately below the induced surface compression.

Book excerpt: Pitting corrosion has a major influence on aging of structural elements made of high-strength aluminium alloys as corrosion pits lead to much earlier fatigue crack initiation under tensile dynamic loading. In order to improve material resistance to corrosion fatigue, it is necessary to reduce pit-tip stresses in the corroded pits areas. Shot peening (SP) is an important and well-known cold working process, having been used in industrial applications for a long time. Shot peening as intense plastic deformation in the thin surface layer affects cold surface hardening by primary inducing favorable residual compressive stresses. It is used in order to increase fatigue strength in operation and to improve fatigue resistance of precorroded material. The paper deals with the surface integrity of shot-peened high-strength 7075-T651 aluminium alloy. The paper describes the effects of SP treatment by presenting analyses of surface roughness measurement, residual stresses, material bending fatigue resistance, fractographic analysis of fatigued specimens, and electrochemical potentiodynamic testing.

Book excerpt: Fatigue and crack growth tests have been conducted on 4340 steel and 2024-T3 aluminum alloy, respectively, to assess the effects of shot peening on fatigue life and the effects of shot and laser peening on crack growth. Two current programs involving fixed and rotary-wing aircraft will not be using shot peened structures. Since the shot peening compressive residual stress depth is usually less than the 0.05-inch initial damage tolerance crack size, it is believed by some that shot peening should have no beneficial effects toward retarding crack growth. In this study cracks were initiated from an electronic-discharged machining flaw which was cycled to produce a fatigue crack of approximately 0.05-inches in length and then the specimens were peened. Test results showed that after peening the crack growth rates were noticeably slower when the cracks were fairly short for both the shot and laser peened specimens resulting in a crack growth life that was a factor of 2 to 4 times greater than the results of the average unpeened test. Once the cracks reached a length of approximately 0.1-inches the growth rates were about the same for the peened and unpeened specimens. Fatigue tests on 4340 steel showed that the endurance limit of a test specimen with a 0.002-inch-deep machining-like scratch was reduced by approximately 40 percent. However, if the "scratched" specimen was shot peened after inserting the scratch, the fatigue life returned to almost 100 percent of the unflawed specimens original fatigue life. Everett, R. Book excerpt: The fatigue strength of three shot-peened aluminum alloys (Al 7075-T651, Al 2024-T351 and Al 2014-T6) and a titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) was measured to determine the differences in shot peening quality from three vendors that were given the same shot peening parameters. Shot peening produces surface roughness, a cold-worked layer and, most importantly, a residual stress layer that resists the propagation of fatigue cracks. Significant vendor-to-vendor differences in fatigue properties were found, with Vendor 1 giving the greatest fatigue lifetimes.

Book excerpt: The U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Research, Development, and Engineering Center Aviation Engineering Division (Huntsville, AL) requested that the U.S. Army Research Laboratory Weapons and Materials Research Directorate (Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD) execute a program aimed at evaluating the shot-peening sensitivity of 7075-T73 aluminum with U.S. Army corrosion-preventive coatings for aluminum. The coatings represent the two most common coatings for aviation aluminum alloys. The study was a follow-up to previous work that investigated shot-peening sensitivity on the base material. During that study, it was discovered that the aluminum alloy showed decreased fatigue strength when shot-peened at high Almen intensities. The present study focuses on the shot-peening interaction with the coatings. Both studies develop data to correlate surface roughness, x-ray diffraction residual stress analysis, and fatigue strength at a prescribed stress intensity, Kt = 1.75.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hugoniot equation of state of 6061-T6 aluminum was determined in the pressure region from 0 to 31 kilobars. The one-dimensional shock waves, which were used to compress the medium, were produced by impacting an aluminum target with a flat-nosed projectile. The elastic shock wave velocity was measured as 6.23±0.15 mm/[mu]. Above the Hugoniot elastic limit of 6.3±0.1 kilobars both elastic and plastic shocks were observed. The particle velocity behind the shock front, determined at the plane of impact, was compared to the free surface velocity. Above the elastic limit the free surface velocity was less than twice the initial particle velocity and appeared to be a function of the thickness of the target.

Book excerpt: This study investigated the effects of soft body impact damage on the residual tensile and axial fatigue strength of Boron-6061 Aluminum composite material. Unidirectional B-6061 Al specimens were impacted with room temperature vulcanizing rubber (RTV) spheres in a powder charge gun facility. Specimens were also impacted under five different tensile loads. Residual tensile strength versus impact velocity plots were generated for each prestress level. The composite was further characterized by axial fatigue and nondestructive tests. All tests were carried out at room temperature. A similar damage and residual strength analysis was done for Ti-6Al-4V to provide baseline data against which to compare the composite. It was concluded that Ti-6Al-4V is much more resistant to impact damage than unidirectional B-6061 Al. A fracture mechanic analysis is presented and a fracture mechanics model proposed for unidirectional B-6061 Al impacted specimens.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of shot peening on fatigue crack growth in 7075-T735 single-edged notch bend (SENB) and three point bend (TPB) specimens are discussed. Fifty-one total fatigue tests were conducted with SENB and TPB specimens, which were machined from an 8.1 mm thick 7075-T7351 aluminum stock plate. All specimens were tested in the as-received or shot peened conditions, with crack perpendicular to the rolling direction, i.e., in the L-T direction. Fatigue tests of SENB specimens were conducted at a constant maximum load, stress ratios of R = 0.1 or 0.8, and to a pre-determined fatigue cycle or to failure. Crack growth rate was determined from the tunneling crack profile or by fractography. Peened surface roughness, subsurface microstructure, and micro-hardness profiles were also examined to evaluate their effect on crack growth rate. The TPB specimens were fatigued to failure at stress ratios of R = 0.1 or 0.8 and a S-N diagram constructed. Both the SENB and the TPB test results showed that severe shot peening (0.016A) slightly increased the fatigue life at low stress ratio of R = 0.1 but was found to be negligible at a high load ratio of R = 0.8. The stress concentration factor due to dimples generated by severe shot peening was estimated to be 1.14 and had negligible effect on the fatigue life. Grain distortion was observed to a depth range of 130-410 μm indicating the depth of the residual compressive stress layer developed for peening intensities of 0.004-0.016A, respectively.

This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aluminum alloy 6061-T6 is a common engineering material used in aerospace, automotive, structural applications. Despite its wide use, little has been published about the effects of damage from surface corrosion on its fatigue life. An investigation was performed where 6061-T6 extrusions were exposed to a 3.5% NaCl solution at pH 2 for 2 days and 24 days. The length of time and pH were chosen in order to create distinct surface flaws. The effect of these flaws on the fatigue life was then investigated and analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Weibull statistics. It was determined that samples corroded for both 2-days and 24-days exhibit fatigue lives that can be described using a 3-parameter Weibull distribution. The result of which was the determination of a threshold value for fatigue as well a general understanding of flaw geometry.
