Download or read book Free-Surface Flow written by Nikolaos D. Katopodes and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2018-08-21 with total page 1020 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Free Surface Flow: Environmental Fluid Mechanics introduces a wide range of environmental fluid flows, such as water waves, land runoff, channel flow, and effluent discharge. The book provides systematic analysis tools and basic skills for study fluid mechanics in natural and constructed environmental flows. As the prediction of changes in free surfaces in rivers, lakes, estuaries and in the ocean directly affects the design of structures that control surface waters, and because planning for the allocation of fresh-water resources in a sustainable manner is an essential goal, this book provides the necessary background and research. Helps users determine the transfer of solute mass through the air-water interface Presents tactics on the impact of free shear flow in the environment and how to quantify mixing mechanisms in turbulent jets and wakes Gives users tactics to predict the fate and transport of contaminants in stratified lakes and estuaries

Book Synopsis Mechanics of Components with Treated or Coated Surfaces by : Jaroslav Mencík
Download or read book Mechanics of Components with Treated or Coated Surfaces written by Jaroslav Mencík and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-12-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface treatment is an efficient means for protection of various products against corrosion and also for increasing strength or resistance to wear or fatigue. Also certain electrical, chemical or optical properties may be achieved only by creating special surface layers. Many examples can be given: leaf springs with shot-peened surfaces; carburised and hardened tooth gears; coated cutting tips for machining; chemical appliances made of glass strengthened by ion exchange; enamelled vessels and containers; components for engines or turbines with heat insulating ceramic surface layers; chemical equipment made from low-carbon steel clad with a layer of stainless steel or other more expensive material; endoprostheses of hip joints with ceramic coatings; multilayered integrated circuits and other components for electronics and electrotechnology. In many of these components, high stresses often act; from mechanical loading as well as thermal and residual ones, caused by the surface treatment itself. These stresses can sometimes lead to a failure of parts bearing small or even no load. Thus, for an efficient utilisation of all the advantages surface treatment offers, and for assuring that the designed component will work reliably for a certain period, often under very severe conditions, it is necessary to know how components with coated or otherwise treated surfaces behave under mechanical loading, and what the reasons may be for their preliminary fracture or rejection from service. It is also important to know the general principles of design of surface treated components.

Book Synopsis Continuum Mechanics Aspects of Geodynamics and Rock Fracture Mechanics by : P. Thoft-Christensen
Download or read book Continuum Mechanics Aspects of Geodynamics and Rock Fracture Mechanics written by P. Thoft-Christensen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During a NATO Advanced Study Institute in Izmir, Tur key, July 1973 on Modern Developments in Engineering Seis mology and Earthquake Engineering it emerged that a debate on Continuum Mechanics Aspects of Geodynamics and Rock Fracture Mechanics would be very welcome. Therefore, it was decided to seek NATO sponsorship for an Advanced Study In stitute on this subject. The purpose of the new Advanced Study Institute was to provide a link between mechanics of continuum media and geo dynamic s. By bringing together a group of leading scientists from the above two fields and participants actively engaged in research and applications in the same fields, it was believed that fruitful discussions could emerge to facilitate an exchange of knowledge, experience and newly-conceived ideas. The Institute aimed primarily at the solution of such problems as connected with the study of stress and strain con ditions in the Earth, generic causes of earthquakes, energy release and focal mechanism and seismic wave propagation in troducing modern methods of continuum and rock fracture mechanics. Secondly to inspire scientists working in continuum mechanics to open new avenues of research connected with the above problems, and seismologists to adapt modern, advanced methods of continuum and rock fracture mechanics to their work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is concerned with free-boundary problems of partial differential equations arising in the physical sciences and in engineering. The existence and uniqueness of solutions to the Hele-Shaw problem are derived and techniques to deal with the Muskat problem are discussed. Based on these, mathematical models for the dynamics of cracks in underground rocks and in-situ leaching are developed. Book Synopsis Mastering Calculations in Linear and Nonlinear Mechanics by : Pierre Ladevèze
Download or read book Mastering Calculations in Linear and Nonlinear Mechanics written by Pierre Ladevèze and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-12-16 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the management of calculations in linear and nonlinear mechanics. Particular attention is given to error estimators and indicators for structural analysis. The accent is on the concept of error in constitutive relation. An important part of the work is also devoted to the utilization of the error estimators involved in a calculation, beginning with the parameters related to the mesh. Many of the topics are taken from the most recent research by the authors: local error estimators, extention of the concept of error in constitutive relation to nonlinear evolution problems and dynamic problems, adaptive improvement of calculations in nonlinear mechanics. This work is intended for all those interested in mechanics: students, researchers and engineers concerned with the construction of models as well as their simulation for industrial purposes.
