The cost is reasonable and it is free from time-consuming procedures. Blending of polymers can yield materials with unprecedented properties that cannot be provided otherwise by using a single polymer. The free surface topography of polymer blend films, often related to phase domain structure, is critical to the applications. Two main aspects need to be considered in the preparation of multistructured blends: the interfaces involved and the morphology to be obtained. The control of these two aspects depends further on materials-related parameters involving the composition of the blend, the interfacial tension or viscosity ratio, and the processing conditions related to the temperature, time, or intensity of mixing, among others. Both domain structure and topography of the blend films have garnered increasing interest over the past decade. This chapter describes the nanomicrostructures formed at the polymer surface from polymer blends. Despite the crucial role that surfaces play in the final application of the material, up to now most of the studies concerning polymer blends have been related to the control of the mechanical properties (toughness, stiffness, thermal expansion, etc.), their barrier properties, or the electrical conductivity. This chapter focuses on the analysis of the structured polymer surfaces and thin films, giving an overview of the role of these structures on the final application. The principles of phase separation and the resulting structures formed are briefly discussed, followed by a wide overview of the possibilities of producing stimuli-responsive interfaces by introducing, among other things, pH- or temperature-responsive polymers within the blend. Finally, we look at how using particular preparation conditions and/or self-assembly of block copolymers, the formation of films and surfaces with hierarchical order length-scales can be induced. We also examine the main areas in which multiscale-ordered interfaces obtained from polymer blends have been applied.

In this thesis, two major topics based on polymer thin films including photopolymerized self-assembled monolayer and nanoporous thin films derived from diblock copolymer are discussed. In the first part of this thesis, a well-packed self-assembled monolayer with phosphonic acid as head group and diacetylenic functional group in the tail formed on AlGaN/GaN surface. According to water contact angle and UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy data, the stability of this self assembled monolayer on oxidized AlGaN/ GaN surface can be improved by photopolymerization of SAMs. The photopolymerization efficiency of the SAMs is effected by the position of polymerization functional group in the alkyl chain. In the second part of this thesis, PS-b-PMMA diblock copolymer thin films were prepared, characterized and applied as a template for electron transfer efficiency determination. The surface COOH group in nanoporous thin films derived from PS-b-PMMA were modified with ferrocene redox moieties having different linker lengths in the organic phase. The surface functionalization efficiency was quantitatively assessed by measuring the monovalent probe cations released from the surface COOH groups via cation-exchange processes using highly- sensitive analytical techniques including spectrofluorometry and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The surface coverage of the redox moieties is an important parameter to determine the electron hopping efficiency. The electron propagation resulted from electron hopping across relatively large spacing that was controlled by the motion of anchored redox sites. The longer linker led to the larger physical displacement range of anchored ferrocene moieties, facilitating the approach of the adjacent ferrocene moieties within a distance required for electron self-exchange reaction. Faradic currents originating from redox-involved electron hopping through the ferrocene moieties anchored onto the insulator surface decreased with increasing the concentration of beta-cyclodextrin ([beta]-CD) in aqueous solution. The current could be recovered by adding redox-inactive guest molecules of [beta]-CD to the solution.

Book excerpt: Properties and fabrications of ultra-thin polymer films and hierarchical composites are of great interest in packaging, electronics, separations, and other manufacturing fields. However, due to the inherently fragile nature of ultra-thin polymer films, measuring their properties has proven difficult. Additionally, variables controlling thin polymer patterns (e.g. substrate wetting property) and composites (weight percent of particulates in matrix) formation have not been fundamentally well understood. Within this spectrum, fundamental understanding of formation mechanisms of these patterns and composites are needed. Additionally, a new characterization technique is required to be able to measure the mechanical properties of fabricated composites and thin films. The pattern (Chapter 2) and composite (Chapter 3) formation presented in this thesis is based upon flexible blade flow-coating, an evaporative self-assembly method. The impact of substrate wetting, varying from being hydrophobic (water advancing contact angle 113°) to hydrophilic (water advancing contact angle 27°), on polymer pattern formation is examined here (Chapter 2). We observe a variety of polystyrene structures including dots, hyper-branched patterns, stripes and lines that can be deposited on substrates with a range of wetting properties. We propose the mechanism for these pattern formations as a balance between Marangoni instability and solute absorption. When adding quantum dot nanoparticles into the polymer (poly(methyl methacrylate) solution in the flow-coating process on hydrophilic substrates, we could obtain free-standing hierarchical nanocomposite films with alternating line and film structures (Chapter 3). The ability to guide assemblies of nanoparticles and polymers in designated areas in one step via flow-coating, provides new understanding of the flow competition of mixing two components which are both on the nanometer scale. Additionally, we introduce a method designated for ultra-thin film tensile testing (Chapter 4). We demonstrate the capability of this method by stretching two-dimensionally macroscopic, yet nanoscopically thin, polymer films on the surface of water. Through laser tracking of the force and displacement on the film, we characterize the full stress-strain response of brittle (polystyrene), ductile (polycarbonate), and rubbery (cross-linked polydimethylsiloxane) polymer thin films. In the brittle (polystyrene) films, we observe a precipitous decrease in mechanical properties (Young's modulus, strain at failure, and nominal stress at failure) for film thicknesses approaching the size of an individual polymer chain (~ 25 nm) yielding insights into polymer chain entanglement theory. To verify our hypothesis in polymer chain entanglement theory for determining failure properties of thin polymer films, we further study the molecular weight effect (853, 490, 137 and 61.8 kg/mol) of polystyrene on failure properties (Chapter 5). We compare maximum tensile strain, maximum tensile stress, and modulus respectively as a function of molecular weight as well as film thickness. We support our hypothesis on polymer inter-chain entanglements theory in thin polymer films by this molecular weight study. This thesis provides direct measurements of failure properties of ultra-thin films. These findings have important implications for the design of materials used in wide range of applications, as well as for the pursuit of new fundamental understanding of polymer physics in confined states.
